2018 Taylormade project (a)

Not much chatter on here about the project (a)

Picked up a dozen in the week and played my first 18 holes with it earlier.

I normally play the chrome soft and found them to be pretty comparable. Chrome soft maybe a little spinner around the greens but not by much.

Will be certainly buying again

Driver = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max-D

3 wood = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max HL

3 Hybrid = Taylormade Stealth Pro
Irons = 4-PW Miura KM 700
Gap Wedge = Miura HB 50*

Sand Wedge = Taylormade MG3 TW 56*

Putter = LAB DF3

Ball = TP5x v’s Chrome Tour

Which ball flew higher off the irons and driver?

Good question!

The course I was playing was very wet so I set up to hit a high ball all day, if I had to pick one I would probably say the taylormade flew higher

I just bought a dozen today. If it ever gets above 35* here I'll give them a try. I've been a chrome soft player for a couple years but since they jacked the price it's time to find a new ball.

I've been playing only Project A for about a year. However I just tried the Cut Grey and would say it's pretty comparable considering the price difference. I haven't tried the newest project a though. Is it much different than the previous models?

A buddy has been telling me this new version is a lot better than the previous, which I have two boxes of that I wont use because the QST was tons better.

I still haven't had a chance to try these since we've gotten more snow. Anyone have further input on this ball?

I really like this ball. Feels great off the putter and wedges. It’s soft. It spins a lot and great distance with the driver. I only used one for 6 holes and I liked it a lot. I bought one dozen plus one sleeve free the first week they came out and just bought another dozen+1 promotional pack.

If you look on YouTube Rick Shields did some testing and spoke very highly about it. And that was the previous version. On the Srixon website check for the Q Star Tour and they have some testing results that say on short wedge shots it the Project A spins 99 percent as much as Pro V1. I was surprised that they would actually show the results but they were trying to make a point that their ball is a super good bargain.

Driver - Callaway Rogue
3w - Callaway Rogue
5w - Callaway Rogue
Irons (GW - 4i) - Callaway Rogue
Putter - Scotty Cameron Newport
Wedges Callaway Mack Daddy 4 - 54 and 60 degrees

I have a few rounds under my belt now with these and I am very impressed.

Last round was a good test as the wind picked up and I got to see how they reacted with the wind and also myself hitting shots because of that wind.

Looks like this will be my ball of choice for 2018

i found the '17 version to be very short. it was a good 20 yard behind anything else. I do have a higher swing speed those these are probably just too soft.

I have the 2016 version in play and I find it very comparable to any tour urethane ball right now. Greens are mega soft and most courses just dropped top coat and aerated, so I don't need 12k spin on my SW in from 70 yards or whatever. Just getting the ball up high usually results in only a foot or two of run out with anything shorter than a 9i.

I suspect once summer rolls around and things dry up, I might switch back to ProV or TP5, but I'm going to give the Project (a) a fair shot.

Grabbed a 'bonus' pack of these last week to compare it to the project S that I've fallen in love with this year....I like them, but I dont love them. Only played a 9-hole walking par 3 with them, but they were meh. Still like the S more as of now. I'll put another sleeve in play this weekend on 18 and see what happens.

Had a chance to get out and play 18 yesterday. Ball feels fantastic off the club, especially irons. I play forged irons, and well struck shots felt great. Soft-ish feel off the driver, just as you'd expect from a 70 compression ball.

On the greens, decent short game control. Some rollout on chips and pitches, but not too bad...but greens up here aren't yet in tip top shape and are slow relative to where they will be in a month. Didn't have any sand shots so can't comment on bunker play. As greens around here get smoother and faster with warmer weather I'll be interested to see any affects on short game rollout...I have a feeling that if there will be one issue with this ball, it will be greenside rollout.

Off the putter, for me, is where this ball shines. For my first round of the year, my putting was fantastic. Great feel off the putter, distance control was spot on.

It was a windy day on Saturday, and I must say the ball did ride the wind a bit. This may not be the ideal ball of you have a high ball flight combined with in windy conditions. I've played balls that have cut through the wind better. Temps were cool in the 50s, but I saw no real distance losses from what I had last year playing mostly the Srixon XV.

Overall, for the performance and price point, this is overall a great ball. Very pleased and anxious to see it's performance as the weather warms up.

I bought a couple of boxes of the 2017 version.

As stated, great ball for the $$. Soft, excellent greenside spin. Good feel off of the putter.

But horrible in the wind. Fortunately we don't have a lot here, and I'm a fair weather player. But, I played in a 2 day tourney in a good amount of wind a few weeks ago, and was surprised at how it poorly it did. I was losing gobs of yardage off the driver to my buddy, who I'm usually within 5-10 yards of.

Good ball overall. And now that the weather has officially gotten nice up here, I'll keep playing through the box and a half I have left and go from there. If it's windy though, I'll definitely play something else.

Played 18 today with the 2018 Project (a), and again was impressed. Pretty benign weather conditions, about 70 degrees, so was able to get a good feel on all shots regarding distances and ball flights.

Similar to my last round in most areas...feel off the driver and irons is good. No real distance gains or losses from by ball of last year, the Srixon XV.

Feel off the putter remains the highlight of this ball for me.

Around the greens seemed better for me this round. Was able to judge the greenside shots from the rough well. I had two bunker shots that reacted nicely.

Durability also stood out well. I had the same ball in play for my first 16 holes, and only lost that ball due to a wayward drive OB. Despite a number of full wedge shots, the two aforementioned sand shots, along with one long approach shot that bounced off a limb, the ball didn't have a scratch or scuff on it. Very impressed.

People need to give this ball a try. It's much improved from the 2017 model that some people didn't like too well. For a nice urethane ball the price point is perfect.

I think they were $30 dz? Can’t complain with new or previous years, when I see them on sale at target or wal-mart always grab a few dozen (usually low mid $20’s) as I like them as a second to my demanding mental reasoning for continuing to play prov1. Lose one I get pissed, find nice one feel like I won a prize. But back to (a)’s, best mid level priced ball for my taste. 2017/or ‘18 both about same, never tried (s).

First round with them in the wind yesterday and whilst I didn’t score as well as I am used to (slipped discs to thank for that) the ball performed really really well.

I hit some big drives into the wind

Punched my irons low into the wind and got instant control on the greens with the low aggressive shots.

This is the experience I had as well. It's a really good into the wind ball. I compared it against the Titleist Tour Soft and it wasn't nearly as soft but a much better performer in the wind. Though in regular conditions I thought the ball was "good" but not spectacular.
