I'll look again after The Masters to see if it's changed.

I realize that no matter how many times I watch '99, Norman will not win. Yet when they walk off the 13th, I have this faint echo of an idea in my head that he will.

It's OK, though, because the echo goes away with the tee shot on 14.

And then the wedge at 15. Has anyone ever really come up with a good technical analysis about what he would do in the swing to miss it right like that all those times under the gun?

No professional golfer has ever had such a combination of greatness and human frailty as Norman possesses, imho. Perhaps I should say "afflicted with".

Not a bad snapshot of the most interesting Masters. In terms of Sundays though, 1997 is famous because it is one of the most dominant breakout performances in history, but Tiger was 9 clear, would have no interest in watching a non-contest like that, especially when you compare it to some of the exciting back 9s the tournament has had. Tiger's win in 2001 was much better to watch, he was chasing the Tiger Slam, plus he had a final round with Phil Mickelson, with David Duval chasing behind.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the 86 tournament?

He was 46, guys. 46. Not 80.

Not even the oldest, Julius Boros won the 1968 PGA at 48 years old..

Julius Boros, Jack Nicklaus, same thing.

At that point, Jack was the undisputed GOAT.

He hadn't won anything in 4 years, a major in 6, in Augusta in 11.

He was 7 back at one point Sunday.

He shot a 30 on the back 9 Sunday. A 30. And he birdied 9. He was -7 over his last 10 holes. And he was 46. And everybody thought he was washed up.

Imagine if Tiger every came from behind in a Major to win ... it was like that.

In fact it had been less than two years since Jack won the 1984 Memorial.

The most amazing thing is who Jack passed with that 30.

Tom Watson (old nemesis and Hall of Famer)

Jay Hass (9 PGA Tour wins)

Nick Price (HOF)

Seve Ballesteros (HOF)

Greg Norman (HOF)

Tom Kite (HOF)

Bernhard Langer (HOF)

Tommy Nakajima (runner up in British Open that year)

Donnie Hammond (2 PGA Tour wins)

and his playing partner Sandy Lyle (HOF)

Tiger coming back with a 30 to win will be EPIC, but if he passes Rory, Phil, Jordan, Dustin, Justin (two of them), Sergio and Bubba to do it?

Olazabal rattled him with that birdie putt on 13. he was juiced up on 14 and his body outran his hands and he blocked it way right and still got a great break to have a shot. That was his miss under pressure. On 15 though it was all pressure, a garbage swing on a wedge when he really needed to pressure olazabal. 87 though he was robbed and it scarred him. i think if he wins in 86 or 87 he wins 3 or 4 masters in the end.

This is such a great gift. Thanks OP for pointing it out. I love The Masters. I started at 1968 and I'm on 1972 now. I'm going all the way!

YouTube golf is all I watch while I'm holed up in my garage working on my winter projects. (a boat this year) It can play in the background without demanding my strict attention and I can look or rewind when something big happens. A four hour Masters broadcast is just what I need.

Masters! MASTERS!!!

(Sorry... it's the Metallica in me. It always comes out this time of year. ?)

Interesting ... surprised the 1996 Norman choke isn’t up there or the 1992 Freddie win that was a very popular when it happened

Tom Watson could had easily won 3 straight 1977-79 and 4 out of 5 with win in 1981

Seve and Crenshaw could had won four or 5 too

1995 had a great leaderboard and great action .. all studs and wash up Crenshaw wins it !

Watch the 79 playoff when Ed Snead just fails , the playoff with Snead,Zoeller, and Watson was incredible ... great shots by all on 10 and 11

Seriously? By all accounts he was washed up, start of the back 9 he wasn't close to the leaders. Watch the round, they're not even talking about him at the start of the broadcast.

And he shot 30 on the back 9.

For those who slam today's pros for slow play (that's me!), watching Faldo (13th in 1996 is almost as long as JB) and Nicklaus, it's clearly been a problem for a while!

Maybe some reasons for the slow play are the additional 500 yards many courses have added, driveable par 4s (I can only recall a few in the 80s...and many pros didn't/couldn't go for it), and virtually every par 5 is now reachable for the entire field?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Jack and Faldo were slow, Langer was ridiculously slow!

I agree 100%. I honestly think if Norman wins '86 or '87 that he would have won almost 10 majors. His approach shot on 17 in 1986 is still one of the most underrated Masters shots ever because he didn't go on to win.

The video package to open the 1999 show is one of my favorites, even though it is tough to watch as a Norman fan. Seeing so many missed opportunities slip through his fingers, either through the remarkable efforts of others or beating himself (or a little of both). As a kid watching, I thought Norman won it with the eagle on 13, but Olazabal answered and the rest is history.

2009 cannot believe Angel won that....shanked one on the front nine. nailed two trees on first playoff hole....man that guy must have some mental game skills.

It also helped that Kenny Perry choked down the stretch with two bogeys on 17 and 18 after almost holing out on 16.

But Angel really finds a way to get it done. I remember his approach against Adam Scott in the rain a few years later that was also clutch (even though he went on to lose).

Norman was even more noticeably slow in 96. So many shuffles at the ball. Got to the point where it looked like he didn't want to pull the trigger. Signs of his collapse.

See also Spieth wiping his hands with the towel before every shot in 2016.
