Iron headcovers - yay or nay?

Recommended Posts

So just got a brand new set of clubs, whole new bag. Only ever had hand-me-downs or old seconds hand clubs so never really thought about this.

Wood and hybrid came with headcovers, so did the putter, and I have a small knitted headcover I had previously made in my football teams’s colours I’ve put on my matte black wedge (definitely don’t want that to get accidentally banged around, looks amazing!) but the irons and sitting bare in the bag.

I’ve always thought people with iron headcovers were unnecessarily protecting their clubs, who cares if your irons have a few dings on them? But now I’ve bought brand new sticks I’m starting to lean that way!

So iron headcovers, what do you think? Annoying taking them off all the time? Good idea to protect your clubs?

If you like your irons to maintain their new look, yes.

If you think bag chatter and a few scrapes and gouges make your irons look sexy, no.

This topic comes up once in a while. I don't use them myself, but if a person wants to use iron head covers that is their business. I don't understand why some people get all exercised when someone is using iron head covers. It's not like they are paying for them, and it's not like it affects their golf game.

If you have forged clubs iron head covers will protect your irons from bag chatter, but that's about it. Cast clubs don't develop bag chatter so the head covers won't really do much good.

However, if you want to use iron head covers, do so!

Completely your choice.

Just make sure they are properly dried when not in use.

Go for it.

I've got an older set of irons that are pretty worn but I still use iron covers. I want to get as many years as I can out of this set and I'd like to keep them looking somewhat pretty. Also I've never been a fan of the clanking sound that my irons make when I'm walking and carrying my bag.

See other thread...

Bottom line is it should not matter what anybody else thinks, just what you want to do. Personally I have used them for several years and have no issue with them at all. I do not find them to be cumbersome in anyway. It literally takes 10 seconds to take them off or put them on.

As for the wet grass, moisture or what have you on an iron possibly causing rust... I would never put a club back in my bag without giving it a quick wipe with a towel anyway and I clean my clubs after every use... so that is a non-issue for me.

Using a bag that doesn't allow clubs to clank, like a Bennington or ogio silencer, keeps them pristine. One step further would be using iron covers during transport to prevent clanking in the car.

Iron covers during play is too much hassle. Not only taking them off and on, but ensuring clubs are spotless and dry before putting the cover back on. I make sure my clubs are clean as a whistle and dry before putting the covers on for transport.

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks you can use them if you feel it benefits your needs. Until I'm certain I want to keep a new set of irons I always use them to prevent unnecessary bag chatter. Once I know I'm comfortable I'm kinda forcing myself to remove them. I will say mine are pretty cool, made of real leather and open ended on both side with a snap closure. This way no moisture builds up. They are handmade out of gun holster leather by a gentleman in Texas. Gent sells them on EBay, Clubsheilds.

I throw them on between rounds when I leave my clubs in the car.

^^This. But more often than not I forget they are on there and walk to the first tee, at which point I still take them off.

Using Iron head covers depends on the person.

When I took up golf, I used covers for a short time. Suppose I didn't know any better. Not till I became anal about my golf game and wiping my clubs down after each use did I find headcovers to be an annoying waste of time. Clubs only last so long when used 2-4 times per week and lay in wait in the trunk.

Two friends have used iron covers for years. Each is a bit anal about clubheads and dings. Unfortunately, each loses at least one head cover during a round, which leads to chasing down where they were left and annoying slow play. If only they were anal about their golf ball striking. :beach:

Nay, except for if you do a lot of walking. The constant clack of irons for 3+ hours can get fairly annoying but the same thing can happen if you ride over bumpy terrain. Plus, even if you have forged heads... you're going to get the sole and face all jacked up from playing.... no matter what you do (if you actually use them) they will get dinged up. Just accept it, and make sure you get irons you know you'll love for years and years, and you will be fine.

I put covers on my 790s at first because I was like "MY PRECIOUS NEW FORGED BABIES MUST BE KEPT PERFECT!!" then I hit a rock with my 7i after 3 rounds and put a big ol gash in the sole. All the head covers came off when I got home.

Used a set of really cheap fabric type covers for a couple years on my '09 X-forgeds. The covers kept the clubs in pristine shape. The cheap covers wore out, bought a set of neoprene covers, were too big for the x forgeds, and took them back for refund. Didn't use covers after that, and my clubs were dinged up quickly. Sorry I didn't get another cheap set of covers. Now, being a minimalist, I have a half set of very beat up irons, and half hardly used.

I bought a new set of Callaway irons on sale last November, haven't used them yet, but got a set of cheap covers through the Internet for around $9. I'll try to keep the irons nice, at least a while.

Broadly speaking, cast stainless clubs do not ding up easily. I have a set of old Pings from 1975, and a set of 1989 TA 845s, both still look good without ever using covers.

My opinion, FWIW.

Yes for me. My MP 32's never rusted and neither have my MP 69's. Sure there's a ding or two, but they would look a lot worse without headcovers. You see, my playing partner goes out of his way to hit every single hole on the course with his cart. While I play with him, I will always use headcovers. I may even buy some for my own head :)
