7 wood?

High Draw

This thread deserves more discussion.

It’s not for everybody. Personally, 7 woods are for weaker players.

Back to the OP, he mentioned he is a stronger iron player than you might as well try out a 3 iron.

Weaker players..........like Louis Oosthuizen, Jason Dufner, even Bubba carries one sometimes........The PGA Tour is littered with Pro's carrying 7 woods

Ok... to preface... my bag setup is d, 3w, 5w, 4i-p, 50 54 58. I'm currently playing off 6.

I am completely comfy w every club except my 4i. I hit it well enough. But dont flight it high enough to hold a green appropriately from 200 out.

I have tried hybrid and 7w. Hybrid just doesnt work for me...my miss is low left, and this just makes it worse.

7w I am love hate with. It flies too high. I live where there is lots of wind. So, I am either short or long... or im throwing it in the back of my stance and delofting it...at which point its now basically a 5w. So when its windy, i'll either just hit 5i or 5w.. On the other hand, in still conditions... its a hero club. my home track has long par 3s. and on a still day its been amazing.

but... overall it gets me in more trouble than the 4i. plus when its windy, the 4i is great for that linksy shot. and if i have a forced carry, the i can manufacture it with 5i or 5w.

anywho ymmv, but thats my experience after tinkering with this 20-24 degree part of my bag for 5 years.

I play the same setup, but pull the 4i for the 7w.

Check out the F8+ 7 wood, has the rails of F7&8 but the weight is in towards the face, should help bring down the ball flight instead of getting caught up on you in the wind

I’ve played a 7 wood and loved it. But that was probably 10yrs ago and the courses I played weren’t that windy. Now, my home course is consistently windy, and I hit the ball probably a little higher than I should so a 7 wood just doesn’t make sense in those conditions. I’ve never been a big fan of hybrids either, but I’ve hit a few long purpose built 3 and 4 irons with great shafts that would be a great alternative.

I originally went to a 7W to replace my 3H. They both went the same distance on very different trajectories!! The 7W really allowed me to hold greens from right around 200 yards where the 3H would either run up and be short or not hold and go over. I played the 4W, 7W combo for many years but after a recent iron switch ( new irons are a bit stronger lofted) I needed to add another wedge to close a gap so I ditched the 4W, 7W combo and switched to the Heavenwood (7W loft with a 4W length shaft) as my only fairway wood.

Not necessarily. In 2004 Senior PGA at Bellerive, about one-third of players carried a 7W. This was the year before hybrids went from a trickle to a deluge.

In the late 1990s (pre-hybrid), a couple of very strong and long PGA tour players swapped out the 2i for a 7W. (Also carried 3Ws)

More recently MA Jiminez, Bubba Watson and Vijay Singh have played a 7W on occasion.

If you don’t get along with hybrids you are crazy for not checking out a 7 or 9 wood. If could only carry one FW it would be my Heavenwood

I have tried many hybrids but never loved one. Golfers seem to either love or hate hybrid clubs. Now I play 4 and 7 wood combo and 7 wood is my favorite club in the bag these days. 7 wood head is more forgiving than hybrid head and the length of the club is short enough to be versatile. The trajectory off 7 wood can be too high for some though.

As you can see, I'm in never-neverland regarding your question.

I played 4W and 7W XRails for several seasons, and now have my Alpha 815s tuned to those lofts. And, I also have FlyZ 3H and 4H.

I'm playing around with different shaft lengths and loft fine tunes to see the best mix of clubs for distance gaps.

  • Final solution will probably be: { 7W, 3H, 4i} pick two out of three.

The 7W is a "go to" club... longish par 3, blaster out of medium rough, bridges 4W and 4H for distance. 3H goes about same distance, but launches lower and hotter. In past I swapped out 7W for 3H in Nov. - March timeframe, when the winds are stronger and the rough thinner.

------------------------------------------

Note: People who hook hybrids should pay attention to the head design. Most standard hybrids have noticeable offset, and a draw bias. If you go with a pro or tour head with a square face angle, this can sometimes lessen likelihood of hooks. Also: Tour Edge equipment reps tout the new CBX hybrid as left-proof.

That Tour Edge CBX is the No. 1 hybrid on the Champions Tour. I have a TEE 7 wood and it is easy to hit. High quality clubs. Had to change the shaft to get something that launches lower and it is still plenty high enough.

I have a Ping G 7 wood ( one degree weaker setting) instead of 3 iron. Put it in the bag to get the high 200 meter shot into par 5's that the 3 iron could not give. Ping Tour 80 stiff shaft work very well in this setup for me.

When I ordered it the wife asked if I am ordering a chipper as well, as all the golfer she know with a 7 wood carries a chipper too :-) One of the best clubs in the bag.

I’m only directing my comments to fellow members and what I have witnessed in public golf.

There’s no valid way we should be comparing ourselves to pros.

The 3 iron and shafts nowaday are so easy to launch and hold greens; that’s my personal experience. I even have my 3 iron bent to 20* from 21* because it launches to high.

Thanks again for all the information. I Really appreciate it! I will be looking for a used 7 wood to give it a try. Other than the F7 or f8 that was mentioned. Any other favorites from the group. Any to stay away from? Anyone put a lower launching shaft into theirs to keep from ballooning into the wind?

Loooove me some 7Wood action.

Driver

3wood (15* for long bombs off the tee and 2nd into par5’s)

7Wood (21* shafted to the length of a 5wood and clubface is 1* open)

4hybrid (22*)

5iron (26*)

The 7Wood has a longer shaft for gapping. I can hit down on it to deloft and get 5wood distance or I can choke down and ease off it for less distance. I find it much easier to ease off on a wood than a hybrid.

This may be my favourite club in the bag. So versatile and consistent.

I play the TM M2 High Launch 3 and 5 which are essentially 4 and 7 metal lofts. I was a single digit (6.8) for years but age and injuries have limited my game over the last couple of seasons. I just haven't found a hybrid I like. I'm a sweeper and the lofted fairways seem to work better. I was interested to see that Brooks Koepka played an M2 (16.5*) High Loft 3 metal at The US Open. Our games are similar except that he hits his 3 metal 80 to 100 yards longer than me. (HaHa)

I picked up a Vsteel 21* for cheap. Put an Axivcore green 66 R flex in it and I'm hitting moon balls.

Having a issue with it not covering the same carry as my 20* Apex HYB. I figured they should go the same distance, but no.

I play everything else in stiff.

Need to find a suitable stiff, lower launch shaft......Aldilan NV 75 maybe?

Suggestions?

Favorite club in the bag right now. Epic 5 wood set to +2 degrees. Hitting it a lot off the tee. Lands softer than my 4 wood and stays in the fairway. Really sets up nicely at my hone course.

It carries within 5 to 10 yards of my 4 wood on trackman. Total distance is significantly different due to roll. Perfect gap between my 4 wood and 4 iron.

A modern seven wood is just a traditional five-wood from the past.

I have an interest in vintage clubs.

The first metal 5-wood made by TaylorMade, from their original "Pittsburgh Persimmon" Series circa 1980, had 23º stamped on the sole.

You can see one on Google Images any time.

I've got 18.5 and 23º metals in my bag right now but they don't have club numbers on them. .

I'd be cool with no club numbers on anything. Every ten years they mean something different.

High mortar shot vs. vicious hook in that **** over there? Yeah, you betcha, I use a 7-wood!

This. I just got an old Callaway 7-wood and am happy with the results replacing a RBZ 3-hybrid. That 3-hybrid was Jekyll & Hyde -- but always Hyde when it hurt the most (i.e. OB down the left). The 7 pairs well with the RBZ HL 3-wood, so I'm gapped pretty well down to the 4-iron i20 I carry. I'm glad I finally admitted that I just don't like hybrids (and just to be clear, they started it!).

That is a good idea. I have a G30 5 wood and 7 wood but only room for one in my bag. Might take the longer shaft from the 5 and put it in the 7 for a little extra distance. Since it only takes a couple of minutes it might be worth a try.

Yes. Ping G400 7w (20*) because it is hard to go left of left . I enjoy the high soft landing long approach shots, especially with some of the long par 3 and par 4 holes on modern courses. For windy days(> 20mph) I put a Srixon u65 (19*) in the bag.
