Best place to find a used BM DH89

lukerguy

Recommended Posts

It's my birthday this week and my wife wants to get me a new piece of golf gear. I told her I want a DH89 350 g with plumber's neck (she has/had no idea what that means).

However, I only ever see on the classifieds once every week or so, and normally they're gone pretty before I can PM. I've checked Ebay and there usually quite overpriced. I'm looking in the $300-$400 range shipped.

Are there any other place to look?

Thanks

LW

In addition...its likely not the easiest putter to find. They are pricey to have made custom and arent sold super cheap. $400 shouls be doable, but it may take some time.

Couldn't I order one myself for $500 USD? How much would all of the additional upgrades cost to make said putter on ebay from BM directly?

Exact pricing you’d have to get from Byron or his sales rep.

A basic DH89 with simple stamping and a simple in house finish (glass blast for example) should stay right at $500.

Things like tour dots, sound slots, hand milled faces, more elaborate finishes, extra hand work, welding, leather grips, etc are all additional costs.

I think tour dots are $50 per location and sound slots are $75. So that putter from Byron will probably be in the ballpark of $625 ordered new.

My carbon DH was ~$700 5 years ago, and I was somehow not charged for everything done. Hand milled face +$100 rincon neck +$75 tour dot, sound slot and hand softening of top line. I think I was only charged for hand mill and rincon neck plus $25 for something else???

Worth every penny, although I've been rolling my restored/refinished Circa 62 no 2 lately that has a total of $200 into it

I think if you’re paying for more expensive upgrades Byron will sometimes not charge you for some smaller stuff like rounding the top line or softening the bumpers.

500 for any DH89 is still a good value in the secondary market unless there's major wear or something really off about it. A brand new Plain Jane with purely stamping only will be 500. GSS Plain Jane is 1000 new. Tour dots, sound slots and/or welded necks(anything not plumbers) gets you into the 7-800 range.

If you're finding good condition DH89's for $350 or less the seller must be desperate!!! I bought mine for roughly 800 and if I was to sell it today I wouldn't accept less than 600.

As someone who looked to make a Christmas putter splurge last year with a budget in the same range at the time, you aren’t going to find a dh89 sub400 unless you are extremely patient or you get the most minimal version.

Your better bet would be a used 006 or 007 through here or EBay if you don’t want to stretch

I started hunting in January and didn’t end up making a purchase until after March. I looked at every boutique putter maker out there used and almost purchased a black lab one custom (he has great prices for custom) but ended up passing because I live in the northeast and carbon putters seem like more maintenance than I wanted.

Ended up buying a Scotty through a third party shop that did a custom paint fill for me. Two rounds of realizing that a fancy putter actually made me less confident and guilt over buying a putter that much I eventually sold it for a small loss and bought a odyssey mallet to compliment my 80 odyssey blade and pocketed the difference.

By no means am I saying is a bad idea at all enjoy the hunt Byron has some beautiful putters. If I didn’t have these demon spawns people call my kids they are probably the first custom I would buy.

To be fair, the Byron Morgan 007 is a nice looking headshape. I won’t lie, a DH11 is wet dream town for me.

The only way you're going to get a really nice Byron DH89 for $3-400 is to be sitting at the computer when it gets listed and pray the seller is willing to ship to you.

I just sold a well used one for $350 with a worn finish, small top line nick, and random initials stamped in it.

My advice is expand your budget and get exactly what you want.

100% agree! Don’t settle for a cheap example of a DH89 and never really be happy with it. Get one you really want and enjoy it for years to come!

I’ve been using my same putter for 7 years now and have no plans to replace it. And yes, I went over my original budget to get it... by a lot!
