Bought some Tin Cup last weekend . Pretty smooth.

What is a good Irish whiskey to start with?

Some of the local prices are higher than scotch.

These are names that I never heard of.

as mentioned Jameson and Tullimore Dew are good and cheap.

Jameson is sweeter than Tullimore

Not a huge fan of bushmills

Redbreast is good but pricier than the first two

I’m more of a scotch guy but one of my attorneys sent me this bottle. One of the best bottles I’ve had in a long time and highly recommended.

I was in Woodland, CA yesterday. Californians get fleeced financially on most things, but the liquor price are quite refreshing compared to Oregon and Washington. I picked up some Basil Hayden's. And, since most items branded KSIG have worked out for me, I bought a bottle of the Ksig Bourbon ($30 in CA and $50 at Costco in Seattle).

Forget Basil Hayden's and go for the gusto :

Old Grand Dad 114 (the old man you see on the label is Mr Hayden himself ). It is also a Beam liquid - there was a lot of freaking out that they may discontinue but it is still going - OGD is ironically the superior bourbon to BH as this recipe is unchanged from the old days. Its also cheaper at $25 - the bonded version is also quite good ( and it's the bourbon of choice for James Bond - need I say more )

One of the smoothest sips out there which is amazing at 114 proof

Cheers

just got into the game in December. so far in my bar are Blantons (recommended from my BIL), Weller SR and Weller 12. Weller is stocked pretty well and one local spot. all are great. now i want to re-do our home bar area to accommodate for more bottles.

It'll be hard to try much else. The Wellers family and Blanton are two of my all time favorites.

for sure. that Weller 12 is living up to the hype. i wish the Blantons was in a bigger bottle because I haven't had it long and drinking it like some sweet tea. for $60 a pop, i need to simmer and prolong that bottle but it's great.

I think i'm going to snag an Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig or EH Taylor next. not sure if i can find an Elmer T Lee. trying to build a small collection at home to try.

Yeah the Wellers is a perfect every day sipping whiskey (here we get them, if you can find them, for about $23-$25 a bottle). Blantons is more for special occasions for me.

I love finding the cheap and excellent whiskeys. If you want another cheap every-day sipper, the Larceny wasn't bad. It was a bit more "hot" than the Wellers, but I just put a splash of water in it and took a lot of the hot out.

Note my above post on OGD - right in your wheelhouse - you're welcome

that doesn't suck.

i'll probably never taste the two on the right given their prices but big fan of the weller 12. just had a pour the other day.

Weller 12 is the same thing as Van Winkle Lot B, so you can say you've had pappy before. And the William Weller is just cask strength Weller 12, so not too far off from it's watered-down cousin. I like George Stagg better.

Long time thread lurker, first time thread poster. ActIve poster in the craft beer thread, but a recent gout diagnosis has pushed me away from stouts and back to my first love...bourbon.

I check in regularly just to drool over the Pappy pictures. Still never had it, and as a Michigander it’s unlikely that I will. I’ve been putting in for the local Pappy raffles for years with no luck. Questions for the Pappy fans...is it worth all the trouble or should I just quit trying with the raffles?

I think depending on the price of the raffles, that will be the only way i'd be able to get my hands on one. though depends on how much you spend on the raffles, you may have worked your way up to purchasing one outright. other option is the FB pages for one being raffled. i wouldn't pay secondary prices for a taste of them, IMO. or hit up your local bar that has some and see if they sell any of it.

I've yet to actually taste any of the Pappy but i'm happy sipping my $27 Weller 12 which many say is just about the same.

Try and find it at a bar.

The PVW of today is not the PVW which made it famous, at all. All bottlings after about 2009-2012 of PVW taste completely different than what gave them the hype - and what gave them the hype was Stitzel-Weller whiskey inside of them; not the Buffalo Trace stuff they use now.

In my opinion it is NOT worth the trouble. In Texas the likelihood of finding any PVW or BTAC at msrp is nearly impossible. They can be found at stores where they have been marked up significantly by the owners. I don't hold it against them. I'm just not going to be the customer who buys it at that price.

Question: in Michigan are you playing a raffle to buy at msrp? Or just to buy at whatever price the liquor store says?

If you like wheated bourbons, then there are many other options that are (1) readily available and (2) reasonably priced. Save your money and try it in a bar someday...
