Skipping holes as a single

Recommended Posts

I played as a single last week. The group in front of me was a foursome. They were moving along pretty well but of course me playing alone, I was right behind them on every hole. Frustrated at not being allowed to play through ( I never asked them to let me) I skipped a hole and went past them around hole 7. One of the guys from the foursome comes up to me on the next tee and starts yelling that I can't jump in front of them without asking. I told him I skipped a hole for which I don't need permission from them. In the past , people always let me play through as a single. This was a very weird encounter.

What do you guys do if you are playing as a single behind a group that doesn't let you play through ?

If the course is open in front of them, I would skip...I do it all the time because I'll be long gone before they even get to the next teebox.

My question is how did the conversation come about? If you skipped an entire hole, how did they catch up to you again? If there was another group ahead of the group you skipped, such that you were waiting again but just in front of the first group now, then you probably should have not skipped. They will be waiting on you as you wait for the forward group. In that case, play a ball off each tee or something to get some practice in.

Usually I'm let through (although sometimes I prefer to use the time for practice rather than fighting through groups). Most people seem happy with me skipping holes but I did once get some stick from a group even though I didn't hold them up. In my case I was playing back down the next hole while they were playing up the previous one.

Seems like some people are just jerks.

Seems like these stories always end up the same way. The OP takes the role of Private First Class, Louden Downey.

Lt. Kaffee: Did you tell the OP he could skip a hole?

Colonel Jessup (as the starter): I did my job.

Lt. Kaffee: Did you tell the OP he could skip a hole!

Colonel Jessup: You’re GD right I did.

Pfc. Downey: The scorecard says nothing about skipping a hole! What did I do wrong?

Galloway: It's not that simple...

Pfc Downey: What did I do wrong? I did nothing wrong!

Lance Cpl. Dawson: Yeah you did. You were supposed to ask for people who couldn't ask for themselves. You were supposed to ask to play through.

I played as a single behind a threesome yesterday. I took my time and laid back. At hole five they asked if I'd like to play through.

I said, " no thanks, I'm not in a hurry, enjoy your game".

I played 18 in 3:20, played deliberately, scored well, and enjoyed myself. Golf doesn't always need to be rushed.

Same thing you did. You don’t ask to skip a hole, you should be asked to play through.

If not you skip a hole and your the only one that is inconvenienced.

Once he started yelling I'm not sure I would keep my cool. If I did I might say something like "It seems to be the best solution for both groups. I don't have to wait on your group all day and your group doesn't have to wait for me to play through. If you prefer I could go back to the tee and you could let me play through like you should have done X holes ago. Would you prefer that? I would prefer to play all 18 holes today but am willing to make the sacrifice of skipping a hole so as not to have either group wait on each other".

I was a single joined up with a threesome of older guys last year. We were probably on pace but still kind of slow and we started to fall behind the group ahead of us. The twosome behind us skipped around us. I don't think the guys I was paired with even noticed.

Why would someone care if you skipped ahead of them. It's not an issue unless the situation flips and then they have to wait for you. Then suddenly, the waiting becomes a huge issue. People want to fight. Very strange logic.

If the course is open I will tell the group that I am going to skip the hole and as a single I have never had a problem. Just to clarify, I am not asking to play through which to me means playing the hole the group is on while they wait for me to finish the hole. I normally ride on a full length course and just go back and play the holes that I skipped. If the course is full there are no good options.

Exactly , that's my opinion as well . If you skip a hole or two , that's your problem as a single. You don't have to tell people if you decide to do that esp if they are not waiting for you on the next tee.

I do skip around if it's non-busy hours and there aren't players on the holes ahead...there's nothing worse than the foursome catching up to you and waiting on you because you skipped ahead into a crowd. I usually will only do it I know the course well enough to scan holes ahead and find a place where I can easily cut-over and skip a couple holes without having to walk past a bunch of people.

As far as the foursome giving you crap...whatever...most groups would prefer to not play rushed golf and have a single hitting into them on every hole.

I am of the opinion that if you skip the hole they are playing on, and you don't hold them up at any point thereafter, no permission is required. I play as a single a lot later in the afternoon and I will often skip around. I don't ask permission. That said, I usually take a cart so I can move from one hole to another as needed without delay.

Sometimes you need to ask to play through, but never to skip a hole - so long as when you drive through you are not disturbing someone mid-shot.

Most times for a play-through, the group in front will stop and let you through though, but sometimes, not.

The group should have let you play through. I don’t really condone skipping holes without checking with the group ahead of you as you don’t know what the pro shop has going on at the time. We had one particular gentleman that to put it nicely was a bit of a nuisance with our shop. He always played by himself and would randomly skip holes at his convienence even if it meant jumping directly in front of another group that was playing ahead of pace. He would often come in and complain about pace of play and try getting a rain check. We had one particular Saturday morning that he had booked a tee time for a foursome but only came out by himself and we didn’t have another group to pair him with. I personally told him that we had a shotgun outing going out after the tee times and he needed to play the back nine first and he couldn’t skip around today because he wouldn’t be able to finish the holes he skipped because of the outing. Well he ended up playing two holes on the back nine and jumped to the front nine because there was no one there. Well guess what? He cane around to try to finish the back nine and we had two groups on every hole for a shotgun start and he threw a fit and wanted his money back.

I understand that this is a very particular situation but I’ve seen it more than once in our shop. Someone will skip holes without asking and then get out of position and won’t be able to finish their round. It would just be so much nicer if slower groups would have the common curtesy to let others play through.

Golf never needs to be rushed. :)

I play as a single mostly, and don't believe a single deserves any special consideration. One course I played in CO would throw you off the course if they caught you going around groups in front of you. If the group in front is too slow, they will be asked to speed up or allow you to play through.

If I start behind a group, or catch up to one, I simply slow down a bit. I never ask to play through. If offered to play through, I may or may not depending on how I'm playing. If playing well, I won't play through as doing so usually screws up my game. ;)

The polite thing to do is advise the group in front (not necessarily ask) that you are skipping.

"Hey guys, I'm just going to skip around and jump ahead - have a great day."

But maybe that's too much to ask.

No wonder you guys play alone.

I had a threesome once that wouldn't allow my daughter to play through at a private club. I was driving and she was playing. There was no one in front of them. As we drove by I smiled and waved. One of the guys threw an F bomb as well as other obscenities at us as we drove by. I calmly turned my cart around and drove back to confront them. No one was going to use that language in front of my daughter. I grabbed the driver out of his hand with my left hand while grabbing his throat with my right hand and pushed him up against his cart. Told him if he ever talked that way around my daughter again I would beat his $%^$. His buddies were in awe. I then drove to the pro shop to tell the pro what happened. The guy was fined by the club and eventually left. Apparently, he had done these things before and the club has a policy to let smaller groups or faster groups through. I don't think I have ever been that hot in my life.

Bottom line, people not letting others play through or to skip a hole are more in the wrong.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Sigh. F*ck him. I hate skipping a hole, but if the first class a** hats in front of me don't offer the faster group to play through, you can be pretty sure they're not going to react kindly to me asking to play through. If they have a beef with it, I ask them to call the pro shop to send out a ranger, and then ask them to explain to the ranger why they didn't allow the faster group to play through.

I understand not wanting to allow a group to play through if they're in position on a crowded course. However, with one or more open holes in front of them a group should allow the group behind them to play through without them having to ask. 'Don't understand why these folks get their panties in a bunch over letting faster players through.

If I am playing as a single and the group in front is playing slower, I'll typically give them a few holes to let me play through. I'll take some extra time on the green (or if it is really slow and there is nobody behind me I will turn the round into a multiple ball practice session). But after a few holes of me riding them, and if there is 2-3 open holes ahead, I will just skip. Sometimes they are looking for the right opportunity to let you play through, so I'll give it a few holes. I don't think I owe it to them to inform them that I am skipping ahead. Especially if it is wide open and I won't be affecting them at all.
