When I play more frequently, I will shoot par or better a few times a season on courses I have good experience with. In terms of when it happens, it usually comes when I don't play with the people I know. The foursome I typically play with at my home course can get around 18 holes in about 2 hours if there is no one in front. There isn't enough time for practice swings, judging the wind, or lining up putts. I don't need a lot of time, but more than that to execute a plan.

Played my first full 18 since starting to golf with my daughter back in January. Played better but scored poorly on the front 9 and played poorly and scored better on the back 9.

I broke par 20 times in the last year. So about once every six rounds. Nowadays, the key for me is playing a course that is under 7000 yards. Hopefully under 6800 yards. If I do that, I break par about once every three or four rounds.

 

When I do, it is usually when I drive the ball well. I am a short hitter, averaging only about 245 off the tee, and that is on a good drive. I go in streaks, though, where I am both short AND crooked. It is nearly impossible to hit the ball short and crooked and break bar. I can shoot around par hitting it short and crooked because my short game, wedge game, and putting are pretty good. Breaking par that way is TOUGH.

 

If I am able to drive the ball well, and I am playing a course around 6500 yards, then I have lots of approach shots of less than 150. Inside 150, I usually will hit several shots inside 10 feet on my good rounds. When I am playing really well, I will have two or three kick-ins in a round from inside 120. Did that last week, in fact. Shot 2-under 70 from 6500ish with five birdies and 3 bogeys. Two of the birdies were wedges I hit to gimme range.

 

Also, if I am playing a shorter course, I will be able to reach, or get close to reaching, one or two of the par fives and two. That also helps. :-)

I have to be in the right frame of mind. I play a TOUGH course, with a 74.5 rating, so I'm not the + handicap shooting 68 all the time on a track that rates 69. whatever. What helps me the most is knowing 1 or 2 of the regular guys I play with ARE going to shoot 68-69, and another one can drop a 63 on us at any time. For ME, I need that mentality on the first tee to focus. Playing alone, or with my work buddies, I lose interest on the range before we even start......

I have really enjoyed reading these post. I can see that most of the responses come from players with strong games and I think I can learn from the mentality being shared. Thanks for all the comments up to now and I hope more will come.

So far, I have read with interest and tried to take some thoughts to the course this week. Unfortunately I make it through a few holes with my mind where I think it should be but still degrading the round on a few holes. Mainly par 3's are eating my lunch even though I feel I am hitting my irons well. Had a little downhill 148 yard today into about an 18mph wind. I got it up in the wind and landed on the very front of the green, backing it off down the steep slope and into the creek. A pitch back over the creek to the back side of a green with a front pin. A nice little 3 putt for a triple. Added a double to that for a smooth 42 on the front with zero birdies. One birdie and 1 eagle on the back for a one over 36 equals another 78. Also shot a 78 earlier in the week on a different course :-(.

I am not giving up though :-))

You're on the right track. A 78 is a solid score. What is the yardage/rating/slope of the course you are playing?

Can't say I have ever find golf improvement to be linear.

 

Hot streak then Cold streak.

 

Work on you game = get worse.

 

Get used to the work you did on your game = get better

 

Etc etc.

I have broken 70, seven times on a championship golf course. These rounds had two things in common. I kept my focus throughout the round and I entered the round with no expectations. When I lose focus, my number one swing flaw rears its ugly head. I move on the ball. My head movement can be quite pronounced and it only takes a few swings with this flaw to blow up a round. If I stay focused, I stay within myself and good/great things happen.

 

We have a local muni that plays to a par 70 and is only 6,000 yards. I have broken 70 on this track countless times, so when my ego needs a boost, I play there with a few friends. It's a "popcorn course" with huge fairways and very few hazards. Postage stamp greens are its primary defense. I think that playing this track gave me the confidence that I could go low on a championship track.

I shot 65 on mens night Wednesday to blow the top off my early season.

 

My trajectory is encouraging but odd:

 

8-9 under par rounds in a decade.

11 under par rounds last year

3 under par rounds in a month this year.

 

I’m getting more comfortable doing it at away courses a couple times a season, I did it for the first time in a tournament last year.

 

I’m chasing the elusive scratch but I shoot some really high rounds too often. Usually my low rounds hinge on hitting my driver long and straight. Crooked=OB/chip outs/no looks at birdie.

Last season and into the Fall was a real eye opener for me. I finally broke par by a good bit and overall my scores and handicap dropped. I was playing 2 to 3 times a weekend and practicing or playing around twice during the week. I was seeing steady improvements.

 

The time changed and I couldn't do that anymore. I added work hours, almost completely stopped working out all together, and rarely get to practice or play anytime other than weekends. And because of weather conditions, work responsibilities, and other engagements, I've played the least amount of golf this year that I have since I really got back into the game over 14 years ago.

 

I'm seeing my handicap go up. A lot of the improvements I made are still there but I have a LOT more blowup holes now. Simple mistakes with setup or tempo and my round is over early.

 

It has really instilled in my how much practice and maintaining my fitness impacts my game.

For me, it's always a double bogey because of a horrendous tee shot somewhere.

 

I shot 34 on the back 9 yesterday with no bad tee shots.

 

On the front 9 I shot 38 because I had 2 bad tee shots that cost me a double bogey and a bogey (which would have been a double if I didn't chip in).

 

Tee shots are key for me. Short game thankfully always stays steady.

I break 80 when I hit about 5-7 greens a round

The two courses this week were night and day from each other. The harder was Peoria Ridge with 6960 yards and a 127 slope, the other was 6380 with a 112 slope.

I hit the ball well on both...but could not escape the big numbers!

For me it is a combination of good putting with my under par scores typically averaging 3 to 5 birdies per round and avoiding double bogeys.
