Track guys/sprints.....

Warrick

Recommended Posts

Anyone on here involved with track/sprinting, either a coach/parent, anything?

Quick rundown.

I was fast as a kid, never ran track, but stole over 100 bases in my baseball career, never thrown out (passive brag), and I was done in 9th grade.

I knew my kid had some speed, great base stealer, and we we ran 40's for 5-6 grade football, we was fastest in school as a 5th grader. I tried to get him in track in 7th gr, not interested. His Science teacher coaches track, and we talked him into giving it a go as an 8th grader. He has 0 experience, and is very raw, with poor form.

That being said, they ran him a couple open 200's for his first ever events, did ok, with a 4th and a 5th, but has since moved to sprint relays. Has has a PB of 25.61 in open 200, but as I said, has never even run it practice (our small Iowa town has 1200 people), we do not have a proper outdoor track surface for practicing.

Since they put together a new relay team for the 4x2, 4X1 and sprint medley, they have 9 wins and 2 2nd, with one baton drop. They will not run my kid in the open 100m, as they let some bigger kids and a kid with DS run the 100, as that is all they can really run, which is cool, no issues with that. Our middle school track is like LL baseball, all participate.

Anyway, my kid ran a 11.61 in his 100m during the sprint relay, and the large school (4A, we are 2A) winner from state last year ran 11.91.

Is this just average? Should I look at getting him some true coaching? I get we are po dunk Iowa, and those times may not seem very fast, but as I said, he is so raw, his hands are so bad, hanging at his side. I can't tell you how many people have asked me how re can run that fast and look like he is punching his thighs.

Anyway, any insight appreciated. I have no delusion that he has potential to be some top class sprinter, but just know so little about track.

Thanks.

At 13 the times are above average. He has raw speed. Find an AAU team even if you have to travel some in the summer that has a sprint coach. If you have a JC or University close talk to the track coach and see if he can help out with drills to improve his form. Also there is a lot of video that can help with teaching drills. Video your kid to show what he looks like and what he should look like compared to the training video. It helps.

I was a sprinter/football player in college and coached HS track just for info.

Thanks, was just looking for a bit of reference, appreciate it.

I am not even sure I want to post any video, form is so bad, but I may throw one or two up.

Not sure where in Iowa you are exactly, but I did Acceleration Iowa as a kid (I'm 21 now lol) and I thought it was phenomenal. There are all types of athletes who do it, but also some tremendous athletes who participated. Two that come to mind that participated with me were. Amarah Darbod (receiver from Dowling Catholic and went on to be Michigans top receiver) and also a sprinter at Iowa. There have been several barnstormers to also take part and many ISU football players.

I highly recommend it, if you do look for something for your son.

Thank you, will check it out.

  • 2 weeks later...

You can coach him yourself honestly.

I steal a bunch of stuff from Latiff Thomas (short sprinters) and for 200/400 training I steal a lot from Clyde Hart (Baylor coach).

I can send you everything I do with my sprinters during the season and off season as well, including strength training and form work as well.

We will consistently get 400 runners to break 50 seconds, and some sprinters at 22 seconds in the 2. Pm me your email address if you want me to share it with you. Regardless, one piece of advice... get him in the squat rack and build those fast twitch muscles

Good luck, track is my favorite sport! Anyone can be good with some work, and it’s so fun to watch your kid hit PRs on the track and in the weight room.

To me those seem like fast times for a 13 year old. He is entering his prime development years now so getting him coaching can only help. I think in most sports it's nice to have a good base at a young age but most of the major strides happen later than 13 so I don't think there's reason not to go for it now and see what happens...since it sounds like he has a good starting point

I think I ran a 11.5-11.6 as a 16 year old and I finished 4th in Montreal as a high school senior. (Our high school only goes to 16 around). Montreal is a decent size town. So doing that at 13 is fast
