What Would a 10 Handicapper Shoot at TPC Sawgrass?

I think most of the responses were fair. 95-105 seems like a realistic guess for a 10 index. Its an extremely penal course.

We all agreed that a scratch would break 85 at Augusta. So 95-105 for a 10 at sawgrass seems right

Is this sarcasm? There were a lot of people who didn't think an average scratch would break 85 at Augusta.

I agree though that around 100 is a good guess for a 10 handicap on TPC.

I've played sawgrass twice, I was around an 8 handicap both times, and played the back tees which are nowhere near what the pros play. First round I shot 44 on front, 40 on back. The rough was longer than the pros play according to our caddy, but the greens were about the same. Second round I played worse, I believe I shot a 90. I would say a 10 handicap has no trouble breaking 100 from the tees I played, pros tees would play much tougher especially for someone shorter off the tee.

LOL that article seems like it created with the intent to get posted on here and generate thousands and thousands of clicks due to the 100% certainty that the question and answers would create a s***storm of the highest order, like these types of threads always do. Well played Eamon Lynch (we know you're reading) and Golfweek! Get that ad rev baby!

I played it a couple times in the early 2000s and was just about a 10. I don't remember my exact score, but as recall I was kinda mid-90s the first day and felt pretty good about it, and had a terrible, I'm-gonna-stop-counting kind round the next day, hungover and angry all day. It's the kind of course that can just suck the life out of you when things start going bad.

I'm and eight and shot 82 there five years ago. This, from the second back set of tees. Finished par, par, par.

Well, since we all agreed the tournament scratch couldn’t break 85 at Augusta, I’m assuming a non-tournament 10 wood shoot at least 120 at TPC Sawgrass. ;)

Seriously though, there’s potential for a much much much worse score at sawgrass then Augusta. Slope is likely 10 harder...

guys in the other thread were saying a scratch would shoot over 100 so a ten...? Maybe as high as 145? I would say more guys would run out of balls then break 90.

Sawgrass beats you up both mentally and on the scorecard. It can and will crush your confidence.

If most 10's haven't quit or run out of balls by 16, those last three holes will make you seriously consider quitting the game.

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

It depends on the player. I've played in a member-guest where a 10 CH guest shot gross 68. (Which did not go over well.)

But here is an article from the May GD where the 7.9 HI guy plays 2 rounds - one from the 5000 yard forward tees and another from the 7250 players tees. He shot 82 on the forward and 111 on the back tees. It sounds like he putted good on the back tees. LOL

We're saying it's in the tournament- so full on mashed potatoes. Has to be included if we're talking about authenticity at all.

Hopefully our 10 has a volatile temper, and after mashed potatoe guy yells once too often during his swing he goes after him with his driver. Post round interview, 10 guy says "only thing I hit solid all day was his head"!

It is one hard@ golf course. If a most 10s tried to actually play the course and hit drivers where needed and are

going after the flags then I can see some huge numbers.

If a 10 had a bet to break 100 then they could bump it around and hit irons off some tees in order to keep it play....essentially playing the par 4s for bogey. I can see that happening as well.

There is trouble everywhere and the wind always seems to blow.

I hit two in the water on 17 the first time I played it....did not use the drop area because I was determined to hit that green. I was having a 22 year old Roy Macavoy moment.

I played it, one tee box forward from the back, I was a 12 at the time and shot 84. The conditions were most likely worse than when they play the tournament. It was very wet, long rough (+4 inches Bermuda) and fairly fast greens. Mud shots everywhere especially near the aprons. I noticed and I haven't seen a lie this week in the rough where you can't find the ball. In addition, pine straw now covers all the normally bad areas. Wait till they move to March. Depending on the weather, it may be cold, windy and wet.

There are "suburban legends" of scratch golfers who played at Oakmont and shot 130.

I've not played Sawgrass (though have on various video games), but it seems specifically for that course there are a whole lot of bunkers, waste areas, water, "no-man's land" areas, etc, that for any amateur golfer (but perhaps more so for a 10 than a scratch) could present an especial challenge.

As golf is an individual sport, it would be interesting to have contests/sweepstakes each year at various events where a regular guy/gal can enter to play 1 round during the actual tournament. It would be unorthodox, but "spotters" have been known to play in read tour events if a lone single player doesn't want to play alone. I dunno, this might get old after a while but I'd actually find it incredibly interesting for a bit. For sure, some players might complain... but at least rounds 1 and 2 (or even 3 and 4) if the "regular person" went off in the first slot as a single (or last slot Rounds 1 or 2) or something to that effect, that could mitigate complaints.
