Who makes the best 5 wood?

cliffhanger

Recommended Posts

So after playing my current set up i am seeing that the 818 H2 hybrid is the only club that just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the bag. I have also gotten away from a full bag of Titleist and i don't want a second driving iron anymore so i am asking who makes the best damn 5 wood? My only real criteria at this point is a neutral or open face and a fairly flat lie angle. I do like the profile of my 917 F3 3 wood however they do not come in a 5 wood model. Any thoughts would be very helpful guys... haven't gamed a 5 wood in many years.

All 5 woods will perform pretty much the same. If you like your 917F3, I would start out trying an F2 5 wood with the same shaft. It will be the most like your 3 wood, in looks and feel, but it should be easier to hit off the deck.

i have been looking at the F2 to start however don't want to limit my options... some 5 woods look very closed and upright so i doubt they all perform pretty much the same.

You can check the lie angles. Callaway seems to have the flattest lie angles. I game an X2 Hot Pro 5 wood. Compact cannon. In TaylorMade, their Tour versions are flatter than the standard ones. I like the ‘16 M2. Also like the profile off the turf of the Mizuno ST180. Sits nice and low.

Meeks makes a good point; typically "tour" labeled woods are a smidge flatter.

Go to CPO and get an Epic Subzero now. They’re having a sale and that is a great club.

Still playing 913F fairways. Nothing has come close to taking them out of the bag. The 5W is my favorite club in the bag, it’s got a nasty topline scar from a loose sandy range but I’m afraid to get it re-finished or a new head in case the magic escapes.

i was able to demo a couple of Rogue woods tonight. A standard and a sub zero. i liked the sub zero quite a bit more. The standard model seemed to want to go straight left of target compared to the sub zero. Both clubs had the same shaft. The ball flight was noticeably lower with the sub zero but not too low, was actually a nice mid to mid/high flight that started on line. Once i get a couple more options i have access to a trackman i can use at the range. Thanks for the replies so far guys! Seeing your answers especially helps with those where i can see your setups in your signature... that way i can see where it falls into the equation for you.

I went with the normal rogue 5w over the sub zero version. Softer landing imho.

My 3w is the sub zero for more roll out.

The rogue woods lineup is amazingly forgiving and accurate. This coming from a guy that’s always used titleist.

Best 5 wood I ever used was the TEE XCG5. Right now, I have both a PING G25 4 wood cut down to 42 inches and an Adams TLII Ti 5 wood. G25 keeps finding its way to the bag.

Ping fairways perform the best for me.

But according to this thread Ping, Callaway, Taylormade, Tour Edge Exotics, Adams, Titleist, Cobra, and Nike all make the best 5 wood.

Cobra King LTD Black

Callaway Epic Flash 3w

Callaway Mavrik 5w

Callaway Mavrik Pro 4h

Titleist Vokey 54° s

Don't worry about all the newer stuff. The best 5 wood ever made was the Taylormade V-steel. 18 degrees.

Not just a classic but the GOAT.

I agree. But then again, I’ve only carried one 5w in my life and it was a V-Steel 18° with DG X100 steel shaft and it was amazing. Was it THE best... probably not, but it’s all I really ever tried hitting and loved it.

Be prepared when asking this question because the recommendations will most likely be biased to what people have in their bags...nobody make a best anything.
