How much longer are competition rounds?

Recommended Posts

So Saturday we had qualifying for Match Play & Over 55...... No sign up and a regular day on the course and you grab a card and declare you are participating and have it signed & attested at the end of the day.

We are first out and two of us are participating. First time I am as I am okay I think with match play and setting up a game if I do qualify. Our course is not easy but generally wide open and really takes a lousy shot to require searches. A generous 4:15 POP and early season and rough not deep and greens no where near summer speeds.

We are done in our obligatory 2:55 with my friend complaining how slow we were plumb bobbing our putts :taunt: .

Sunday back at the course & heard they were 4:45 come early afternoon (and we are now given gps trackers to combat POP).

I can only imagine a full field tournament day and the POP.

Pace on the greens always slows down in a comp in my experience. The routine on approach shots is one of the places you have to "slow down your roll". If you're ready to pull the trigger and you still have several players grinding on the green, it's easy to get bent out of shape.

The other thing I've seen a lot is the walk back to the tee. Players just don't hit provisional often enough, and there's no throwing a ball down and moving on.

For the most part, though, it's really no big deal. Maybe an extra 10 minutes a side compared to non-tournament round.

You'll always have "those" guys that step up the level of deliberate, like we're in a US Open qualifier. I've played with guys like that. All you can do is pace yourself, slow down your roll, and be patient. I got used to it over time, but at first I wanted to slap a few guys....

This is exactly what I can in to post. You will always have somebody who is going to take a club event a little too seriously and start getting themselves out of their typical routine. You get a few guys who do this and over time the whole course backs up. Play in enough comps and you start to get used to it and find ways to deal with it in your own way. I play quickly, always have, probably always will, and get comments on it a lot in tournament play. Assuming I have somebody in my group who I can chat with, it tends to make the time go by without making it feel like a complete slog. I've made some good friends doing that too!

And that's why I am okay with Match Play where if I qualify I just can arrange the match at my convenience. Maybe on a slower Men's night or if he plays at a good pace my preferred late pm or join our weekend first off...... A whole course of comps and that could be too much for me.

We have both a partners and a singles matchplay at my club and both are always enjoyable and fairly easy to schedule with around 40 or so participating and 215ish total members. We can generally get out right after the guys who I generally play with right away in the morning on weekends or just fit things into a Men's Day group.
