Who uses % for wind calculation

Most people I see estimate wind based on how many yards plus / minus is the wind.

 

Curious who uses % then applies that % to the carry. Are there guidelines online for estimated mph wind hurt / help to %?

Not totally sure if this is what I remember reading but 10 mph wind adds 10% to the carry, so if its 150 yds with a 10 mph wind that becomes 165 yds.

I'd feel more comfortable adding 7 to 150 and expect it not to roll but a smidgen past the hole.

I generally do the “it’s a one or two club wind” calculation in my head. Trying to work percentages based on wind and not considering wind direction would be inaccurate and I can see some of the guys in my group slowing down the course with trying to do some higher mathematics around it. LOL

Wind calculations can be hard.

 

That's why I always carry my whiteboard.

 

 

Actually, through experience you can quickly assess how hard the wind is blowing and adjust your clubs and shots accordingly. And of course, add one more club if going over a lake.

 

Right or wrong, once the decision is made, the key is to make a confident swing.

I think 1% hurt for every 1mph of headwind is pretty accurate until the wind is blowing more than 16mph.

 

In stronger winds, you've got no choice but to flight the ball as low as possible and intuit whatever club you need to get the job done.

 

For example: One day in 30+mph winds, I hit driver into a 218yd par 3 with big trouble on both sides. Made my 3, too!

I use the "about a X club wind" or "I'm going to add so many yards." I've been playing golf long enough in a very windy part of the country that I'd be far more comfortable doing it the way I do over trying to figure out percentages. I say go with whatever you know best!

My thought process on a windy day is pretty routine, say it's breezy over my right shoulder direction approach shot from 140.

The "caddie" in my head say's " let's go with the 9 instead of the 8, it's from 4-5 oʻclock and smooth swing " stuff.

Worth remembering that into the wind,especially when it's cold, the gaps between clubs collapses.

 

Into a 2 club wind the space between your 5 and 6 iron may drop from, say, 15 yards to 10 or less. ( At my age it's more like a drop from 10 to 7yds.)

 

So if you think it's a 2 club wind and you go 3 or even 4 clubs stronger your unlikely to hurt yourself and more likely to get it there.

Caveat: carry distance. On super hard and dry links courses like we have here in the UK sometimes the total effect of the tailwind can be well greater since it can be virtually impossible to get the ball to stop due to the flatter landing angle.

Same for me - other than that it breaks down to a SWAG (scientific wild a** guess). I typically just say hrm okay, one or two club wind, pick the one that will get me in the least amount of trouble with a less than perfect swing, and mash it.
