Anyone using "undersized" grips?

Picked up an off brand fairway at a thrift store because it felt so good to swing. Took me a while to figure out this was due to the undersized grip. Anyone had a similar experience good or bad with undersized grips?

I use Ping Aqua code (-1/64) as I have short fingers, I use a Cadet Medium glove. If I play std or midsize grip, ball usually heads a bit left (to the right for you right handed golfers).

Thanks Milfordlefty. Appreciate including brand and measurement. Doesn't seem many here have experimented with smaller grips. I'll check online.

I believe that Ping's aqua grips are a 60 core so on a 600 butt shaft they are the "old" standard size. Many/most companies have moved to a 58 core grip as standard.

Same here, used std grips forever, when I went Ping was fitted into the aqua grip. There is a chart on the Ping website that tells what size grip you should use depending on measurements, I think it is under fittings.

I too have small paws so have always asked for my grips to be as thin as possible. Bigger butt lightweight steel shafts can be a nightmare as even with a thinner grip like a Tour Velvet they are too chunky. Sold my old AP2s with XP95s for that reason. Got a new Ping G with an aqua and that is great. In the past I have used ladies model tour velvets if a wood shaft was thicker at the butt end. I remember touring Ping UK and the lady fitting grips said their heaviest and thickest grip was a full ounce heavier than a Winn ladies grip.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't ever before remember reading anywhere a single reference about the benefit of certain players using undersize grips. While my hands measure slightly over the average, my middle finger measures 1/4" under average. And my fingers are strong but definitely aren't burly. Okay, so begins my search for undersized grips. Thanks!

  • 1 year later...

I have sasquatch type hands - wear an XL glove - but I also much prefer undersized/smaller grips! I think it's just a comfort thing for me. I hit my buddies midsize grips, and I felt like I was swinging a baseball bat.

Andy Bean use to stretch his grips to make them smaller. His hands were huge. I was thinking about doing the same thing again. My hands are medium large.

The main benefit, is that it allows more precise placement in the fingers....and also fuller "wrap around" at the top of the grip with the "pinkie" finger.

Some "standard" size grips taper to a small size in the bottom half, but still have a rather large top or "cap" to them. Not the same as a true undersize grip, that has a small top.

Also, some players like an undersize grip that is built up to a more "standard" size in the bottom half. It creates a final size that has little taper. Can also build them up overall, not just the bottom, which will create a more standard size...except for the very top, which doesn't stretch larger on grips with a relatively firm top cap. Works great for someone who only wants a smaller size for the last 2 fingers at the top of the grip

Andy's nickname was "Big"...lol. I followed him for 18 holes at the Canadian Open one year. In fact I think he was the first professional golfer I'd ever seen on the course and I couldn't believe how high he hit the ball. At the time he had to be 6'4" or 6"5" and 230-240lbs. I can't imagine him wanting skinnier grips. :taunt:

I made the switch to mid-size grips this winter and now a regular size grip feels like a ladies grip to me. I can't imagine going to anything smaller. Best to experiment and find out what works for you. I was told the mid-size might push me towards a fade but it hasn't happened.

It depends on how you grip the golf club.

I have large thick palm but relatively short fingers ( comparing to the palm size ). I use medium or ML cadet size glove .

But I prefer medium sized grip because I hold the grip at the base of my fingers like it supposed to.. I guess if I grip the golf club more in the palm then, the smaller size would fit better.

I wonder why most the professional golfers using larger grips than their hands size ? Did they all have early arthritis in their hands or it's better for a higher swing speed .

I'm similar. Cadet ML/L depending on the model. Some normal L fit also. If I try to wear a normal M the fingers fit if I can get the glove on far enough but it's so tight I can't make a fist! Sucks really
