Maui Jim v. Oakley

Recommended Posts

I’ve worn MJ for 20 years and love them. Bronze lens is my favorite. Three things wrong for Golf. They are too dark for some light conditions. They aren’t the best color for Golf. They are polarized, which makes it harder to see the slight undulations in the greens. Yes....I know. It’s weird but it’s true. Polarized glasses are no good for reading greens and 90%+ of sunglasses are polarized because it’s great for cutting glare.

So anyway....I can’t stand the frames on the Oakley’s. Both the styling and the straight arms.

Despite this, I went ahead and ordered a pair of flak jacket 2 with the Golf prism lens in prescription because I liked the way the different shades of green pop on the putting surface. They purposely arent polarized. They also aren’t very dark so the work well in overcast conditions or at dusk, when I play a lot. It all sounds great for golf.

After getting the glasses, two problems: they move around on my face and the prescription isn’t right for me.

1. I Fixed the moving around issue by wearing the stupid straight arms OVER the outside of my cap. I wondered why all the pros on TV did this. Now I know.

2. They go back to Oakley twice and they can’t “fix” the prescription. Apparently the prescription is “optimized” for wrap around frames and that process changes them ever so slightly from your stock prescription.. Their machines will only make them in this “optimized” format.

According to the manager, a tiny percentage of people are bothered by this optimization. I’m apparently one of them. They are unwearable. They give me a massive headache. After 2+ months and 2 trips back to Oakley, I apparently can’t wear prescription Oakley’s and I get my $400+ dollars refunded.

Oh well. I guess it’s back to the MJ’s. Maybe I’ll try their “high transmission” lens this time just for Golf. I Still like the bronze for everything else.

I cannot find the dark prism golf lenses for the life of me!

I cannot find the dark prism golf lenses for the life of me!

Just do a search under Oakley dark golf and a few hits come up. They are mentioned in a golf digest link https://www.golfdige...yewear-for-golf

They are mentioned in an oakley forum but this link has the most info http://www.visionmon...dark-golf-lens/

The eyecare place I wound up purchasing from found them on the Luxottica site. Interesting in that they go to the patent site and they don’t use the Oakley site when ordering prescription Oakley’s.

  • 2 weeks later...

Anyone wear glass lenses on the course, such as the Maui Jim or the Smith's? I love the optics of glass lenses but wonder if they would be too heavy in a frame that's suitable for golf.

You can find some superlight pairs of Maui's. I just got some Sandhills from Costco for under $100 and it feels like you aren't wearing anything at all with the titanium frames and rimless lenses.

I have a pair of Maui Castaway that are glass lenses. I played golf in them, ran in them, and wore them for all kind of things without issue. Never had a problem with them sliding down or moving around.

That's what I was hoping to hear...I love the Maui glass lenses. Thanks for the feedback! By the way, what color lenses do you have in your glasses?

Jag- do you have an astigmatism in one of your eyes? I have contacts (right eye has an astigmatism) and I am wondering whether the Oakley Rx will accomodate this with their "optimization". If not, I will just keep going with contacts with my non-Rx Oakley prizms.
