PXG OPERATOR

Recommended Posts

First thing I think when I see this is "wow, that looks like PXG's version of a original scotty futura x."

I found it interesting that they have it retailing for $450, rather than $550 like the Gunboat. Quietly dropping their price to be more competitive with Scotty Cameron and Bettinardi perhaps.

I love that they offered in 3 neck options.

I rolled all 3 variations yesterday at their corporate headquarters here in Scottsdale... Feel is firm, yet responsive. Size is similar to Spider tour. I ended up ordering the face balanced version. I should have it early next week and I’ll report back!

How did it feel, sound, and roll compare to youre Spider? I love my Spider but wish it came with a steel face as I've just never been comfortable with longer putts with the insert... This looks great to me..

Feel is firmer than the Spider. Sound is a nice muted click (if you’ve rolled any of the other PXG models, it’s the same). Roll was good from what I could tell! The pictures online don’t do it much justice... it looks better in person.

I'll have one to try from the PXG rep Sat.. Looking forward to it... The stated MOI is higher than the TM as well... Perhaps the wings being outside (Heel/Toe) of the face and body is why. 4900 g/cm2 vs. a stated 6400 for the Operator... I'm interested to see how that translates to impact feel and stability, and misses.. Gonna do a side by side with my Spider on Sat.

Do you have the Spider red or black?

Either way, if you could snap some side by side pics at address, it would be much appreciated.

Also looking forward to your comments on the difference in feel/sound between them.

Cheers,

Mike

PRetty intimidating looking putter. I do think the 3 neck options is very smart. I wonder the feel though. Always gotta wonder about that. I am still waiting for something to beat the feel of my #9 with hinge face.

Do you guys think PXG can / will ever release something in different colors if asked?

Their irons are silver and black finish. Given the current trends in golf and the ability for aftermarket different finishes coming to light, I am wondering if the OEM / first guy in line has the ability to go for the change.

Taylormade has red, white, silver, black finishes. Odyssey has black, red, white, etc. Scotty is a traditionalist but has those options all around for accent pieces and fills. I am wondering if PXG will follow suit.

Good things coming from PXG. The owner is insane but, good things.

I have the Red, I'll snap some pics. If I can snag a Black to put side by side I will as well.

A side note, I rolled an Exo Indianapolis slant neck today and man was I impressed... Still not crazy about inserts though. I love the classic heel toe blade designs but damn these new high MOI toe hang mallets are really really good.

Pxg is very unoriginal. Another copy of a tm design.

Says the guy who putts with a copy of a Ping design.

What was PXG’s first copy of a TM design, anyway?

I don’t understand why people are still compelled to make comments like this. There are very few original ideas. When someone finds one that works well, other companies take that idea, adapt it to their brand’s style and release their own version. This happens in every industry... so much so that the idea to make your own version of another company’s successful product is an unoriginal idea.

As much as is see people say “if only they did —— different, I’d buy one of those,” I’d think that consumers would enjoy having more options.

It's definately inspired design for sure... But then again take a look at the Bobby Grace F-18 or F-22... The Operator's wings are outside of the body line of the putter and the face is milled metal.. There are enough differences that addresses things that I would like or change about my Spider to interest me. With that said I wouldn't be surprised if TM files a suit...

Are you not familiar with the pxg / tm lawsuit? Pxg tried to bully tm into not releasing the 790 irons with a patent infringement claim. Tm answers with a counter showing where pxg has actually been infringing in them.

This one pretty blatant.... they are obviously trying to capitalize on a unique style that is popular on tour right now.

Hey, I’ll admit it... I’m a pxg hater. I’ve not been shy on my reasons why.

Hey, I'll admit it... I'm a pxg hater. I've not been shy on my reasons why.

No... I'm not familiar with the public (i.e. incomplete) details of a pending (i.e. no company has been deemed right or wrong yet) lawsuit that doesn't directly or indirectly affect me, my family or anyone I know. Why would anyone want to be familiar with that? Sounds like useless info.

Why would anyone put time and energy into hating a product or brand? You like it, or you don't. You buy it, or you don't. Pretty sure it ends there.

I guess my brain is too logic based to understand forum life. If you want to have an intelligent conversation about designs being copied (because every brand does it... not just PXG, TM, Scotty Cameron, etc...), then I understand... but that would be a separate thread all together.

I was just interested in some info about a product that I may be interested in purchasing.

At least you openly admit that you're a "PXG hater," so I know that I can just ignore all of your future posts about their equipment because they won't include any unbiased opinions or observations that could be of value. That helps a little.

Cheers,

Mike

The Operator is clearly bigger, though not by much. If it weren't side by side with the Spider I'd say they were almost identical in size, it certainly doesn't look over ly big at address.

I have not rolled any yet but the build seems top notch. It looks, and feels more solid in it's build quality than the Spider. Ill roll some putts tomorrow, but as this is face balanced I'm looking more for feedback and sound.

It looks good, we'll see how it feels tomorrow.

I putted around and played 9 with the Operator today and while I do not prefer face balanced putters I can use them. The feel was firm but responsive. It was very forgiving across the face but I was able to tell where I missed, distance control was intuitive and easy to judge. It rolled well and while I wasn't 100% comfortable with the balance, or the Flatso grip that was on it, I still found it easy to game. I'm not sure what the weight is, it was 35" long and felt a bit heavier than my spider but the overall feel and balance of the putter was top notch. The matte paint was easy on the eyes and the sole was slightly cambered so it set easier on slightly uneven lies, I never had a snag issue in the fringe. Very easy transition from the spider and I liked the firmer metal feel of of the Operator better personally.

One more thing, the putter cover is first class. Leather, nice stitching, strong magnetic closure. It is a definite step up from the weak Peach fuzz velcro cover that comes with the Spiders...

Yes it seems like a trivial point but the pxg putter covers have insane magnetic closures; mine will stick to the outside of my wedge when I set them next to the green.

Also a cool story, I bought a bat attack P around September and it came with the white and black old head cover. When they came out with new headcovers they shipped me a new one for the bat attack completely unsolicited, which I thought was very rare for a golf company to do.

Of course now that I ordered the operator I am putting just about the best I ever have with the bat attack so we will see if the Operator can supplant it in the lineup.
