More than halfway through the PGA Tour Season, Jordan Spieth is one of the worst putters on tour. Ho

Currenty, for the 2018 PGA Tour Season, JS is ranked 190th in strokes gained putting, while he is ranked 2nd in Strokes Gained tee-to-green (everywhere else).

Jordan Spieth is the second best golfer on tour until it gets to the green, yet his best finishes are 3rd at the masters and T3 the week before that.

As a big Spieth fan, the only part that really bothers me is how he fails to really admit that he has a problem. Is there not a big problem? Will it just go away as he gets amped for the rest of major season? How long do these ruts last, or is this like other cases of the yips that won't go away?

Inb4 this thread devolves into a discussion about the validity of the strokes gained stat.

Anyways, I don’t think he has the yips, as I haven’t seen any evidence of an actual yipped out stroke. He just seems to not be making much and has lost some confidence. At this point I’d just chalk it up to an extended case of variance. It’s golf, s*** happens some times.

Part of playing at this level is thinking you’re the best no matter what the numbers say. I guarantee if anyone here is noticing. Jordan is more than aware of his decencies.

Vijay when he went in that tear of a season with 9 wins, told himself he’s the worlds best putter before every putt (even though he isn’t even close). Gotta believe

His stroke looks fine to me (just judging from the TV), but with so many missed short putts, I don't think it's solely a green reading problem either. I think he's having issues aiming his putter. So either his setup is ever so slightly different from what it used to be, or his eye sight is slightly changing. At least that's what I believe.

I'm glad this isn't happening to TW or the internet would be broken regarding how he's washed up and doesn't deserve invites to tournaments....

It's just funny how the problem isn't a "problem" in this instance, in most people's eyes. Change the topic's person of interest and the same issue goes from upbeat optimism and benefit of the doubt, to downright cold negativity. Wells Fargo was the perfect example of what I mean. Woes at one tournament get more attention/criticism than 1/2 a season of struggles by another player.

Just an observation, carry on.

Since you guys don't want more strokes gained data (God forbid we have too much information), here are some traditional stats from 2017.

I do not believe Jordan has really ever been that good of a putter from under 15 feet. He makes memorable putts that cloud our judgment.

5-10 feet, 116th, 12.5% (fewer makes) worse than #1

10-15 feet 135th, 14.5% worse than #1

15-20 feet 65th, 8% worse than #1

20-25 feet, 4th, 1.3% worse than #1

Golfers tend to regress (or improve) to their mean. Putting is one area where improvements are mainly illusory (due to a "luck" factor and the fact that there are only a handful of meaningful putts in a round -most will be two-putts and gimmes).

You can take a deep dive here. https://golfanalytic...e-by-shot-type/

As long as he doesn't acquire the yips, JS should be fine in the long term.

He was most likely not a good short putter at any point in his career.

Op. Worst thing you can do is tell yourself “ you suck. You have an issue “. Trust me. I know. In this game you have to lie to yourself all the while working on the issue behind your own back. Don’t ever let’ yourself know about it until you’ve come out the other side !

While he is miserable inside 10 ft (and apparently everywhere else), it only takes 1 or 2 rounds to turn it around. Once you start seeing the ball go in the hole, the stroke frees up and they will keep dropping. It is obvious watching him that he is being extremely tentative with his putts, and thats just a lack of confidence. Ive seen it a number of times where he addresses to the ball with his putter, and then takes it away for a second, then puts it back and putts. Hes never done that in the past, and that again comes back to being uncomfortable. He will get it back, its just pretty unclear right now as to when that will be.

While agree, if it lingers too much longer he could be in the danger zone. At some point those struggles put a lot of pressure on the rest of your game. He has to hope to fix it before he starts forcing it with scoring clubs trying to get too close. As long as he's making cuts and having pretty good finishes, I think he'll be fine. If it starts to lead to missed cuts, it could turn into a much bigger problem.

And yet announcers keep saying he's one of the best putters on tour.

Hank Haney said JS was 205th in putts inside 3 feet. That's a bad stat to own.

I feel he way over thinks everything

They keep saying that because when the bacons in the fire he IS one of the best putters on earth. This slump will pass. Ita a matter of a few putts falling at key moments. And when he tells himself “ I can putt again “ look out. He will add #4 to the tally this year.

205th is never great of course. But it's not as important a stat as it sounds. He has missed 7 of 381. That's 7 strokes all year. In 40 rounds.

Someone brought up the mono thing earlier. I'm confident he's putting bad because he's practicing his putting less this year than probably ever before in his life. He's used to putting with a completely square blade, so just a bit off is going to lead to a two way miss for him, but he'll figure it out with practice.

He definitely doesn't have the yips. Go watch Bernhard Langer before the long putter to see what yips look like.

Haney also says he has the yips. Says he can see a twitch in his hands.

In all fairness to Hank, he thinks everyone has the yips.
