Thrift Store Scores From May

Recommended Posts

I live in an area that happens to have a concentration of old golfers with families who don't care about their stuff, and so get to find all sort of good stuff. Most of it just goes on ebay or CL to actual collectors, for me the discovery and learning about what I found is most all I'm after. I try to 'rehome' anything vintage or valuable, with someone who will care for it, to finance collecting more golf clubs of course. To make me sound a little crazier, I don't even play golf anymore, I'm just interested in the engineering and how it advanced. I try to make sure the historic or rare stuff lands with collectors who care about it, but I also enjoy that feeling you get when you can complete a set of golf clubs for someone who is attached to them.

-3x Spalding Kro-Flite with Hickory Shafts and no serial or patent numbers

-Full Set of Golden Ram Vibration Matched Tour Grind Irons, with new Golf Pride grips

-Full Set of Irons and Woods - Hogan Princess series

-Too many Big Bertha and Warbird woods to count

-Big Bertha 2 10* with upgraded shaft and fresh grips

-Titelist AP2 7 and 8 Iron

-A northwestern shot saver heavy enough to fend off bears, gators, lawyers, and all the other predators you run into on the links

-Older Orlimar Persimmon Wood set

-Partial set of Callaway Ladies Gems 4,5,8,9,S

-Partial Set of Ben Hogan Raidals 3,5,6,7,E

-La Francis 10 Putter

-A couple of acushnet putters that appear to have been drafted into service during the Vietnam war

-excellent condition long hosel punch iron that I think is a Wilson Sand Iron (looks like wilson markings, but doesn't say wilson, just "DOT SCORED SAND IRON")

-And last but not least, a worthless Titelist 8.5* driver that should probably be melted down to make something that is actually useful

Along with all of the usual clutter clubs that you end up with when you hit thrift stores. Now that I've used up all of my good luck for this year, time to get em valued and on ebay. Kro-Flites are pictured below, let me know if you guys want to see pics of anything else. Now if only I wasn't too lazy to list them....

The Spalding irons appear to be pyratone- early steel shafts with a decorative wood grain pattern sheath. Any hickory irons I've seen flare at the tip for strength and go straight into the head- they don't have ferrules. A magnet will confirm. As you'll see, there's a huge difference in demand/value. Lots of cool old stuff though.

Definitely pyratone. You can see the wrapping of the sheath in the posted photos.

Awesome, I was a carpenter for a long time and figured I'd completely lost my head for wood. I didn't want to predispose anyone to my suspicions, but I wasn't sure they were if they were reproductions, I have little period knowledge from that era. It feels like metal, but sounds indistinct when you tap it. Is is possible they are more recent reproductions? Even for a wrap, the condition is a little better than I would expect from something that's lived so long...

I appreciate anything and everything you guys can teach me. Knowledge is the only thing I have the IRS won't take if I stop paying them, so I like it more than money.

I haven't found enough info on the Princess Irons to put a year on them. I haven't started delving into the collector books yet, it looks like one heck of a rabbit hole, as little records as most companies kept.

Yep I agree but some of the more accomplished Hoganistas on here do not need a book they know on sight. I can do it a lot on Macgregor but I am not as tuned in on Hogans-----yet

If the Princess irons have serial #'s, there's a way to decode them for year of manufacture. There was decoding chart posted long ago, but cannot seem to locate it at the moment. If numbers are present, post them. Someone will know how to translate.

And fwiw, the GRTG are the pick of the litter. Still hoping to run into a set of them someday. Post a pic if you would please. May lure in our resident GR expert.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

The Princess irons are on the same ad as the Sabers. I think this is 1957. zfi42fojgsmi.jpg
