Practice Green etiquette

Recommended Posts

A few random putting green questions that primarily only apply to crowded greens.

1. Do you putt to the same hole that someone else is already putting to?

2. On a busy green, is it ok to set up camp at one hole or should you rotate out?

3. Do you limit the distance of your putts?

4. Assuming chipping is allowed, do you ever hit chips onto a busy green if everyone else is just putting?

1) Yes, from a different direction.

2)Yes, its okay. I usually move around though.

3)Depends. If green is empty no problem. If its really busy I will refrain from hitting long putts. If there are only a couple others I'll hit a *couple* longer putts if I will not interfere with anyone else.

4)I'll chip if there is not a dedicated chipping green and I can do so so that I am not hitting my chip toward anyone on the green. If green is pretty busy I will refrain.

1. You probably have to, right? I'd just try to not cross putting lines with anyone.

2. Ok.

3. Not necessarily -- but, again, I'd try not to cross putting lines with anyone if you can avoid it.

4. No. There's probably a dedicated chipping area somewhere. Also, some places strictly forbid it.

Nailed it.

A few random putting green questions that primarily only apply to crowded greens.

1. Do you putt to the same hole that someone else is already putting to? it's ok to do this on crowded greens. not okay on wide open greens. I usually find a spot and stick a tee in the ground to put to when busy. Keeps me and everyone else out of the way

2. On a busy green, is it ok to set up camp at one hole or should you rotate out? either are okay on busy greens.

3. Do you limit the distance of your putts? this depends. I wouldn't try to putt past 2 or three people to a hole further away.

4. Assuming chipping is allowed, do you ever hit chips onto a busy green if everyone else is just putting? NO

1. Sure

2. Sure

3. No

4. Never

If it's really crowded, I'll echo a poster above me who just pegs a tee in the green somewhere with space and putt to that.

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Likely unless I can do it without interfering with others

4. Yes but I will pick a point that is unlikely to interfere with putters. This means chipping to an edge of the green where a hole is not located. I just pick a point on the green and chip to that. Will also do that with putting if the green is over-crowded.

I have some Srixon branded putting disks that I like to use on crowded greens. Titleist also made them at some point.

If, by “camp out”, you mean use 2-3 balls and putt at one hole, while sharing, that’s fine. If you mean build a putting station with 10 balls at different positions around the clock, string line, etc. and expect no one else to bother you until you’re done, not when it’s crowded. If there are fewer people than practice holes, knock yourself out. I suspect you don’t mean the second situation since you’re concerned enough to ask, but I’ve run across my fair share of people who do this.

At the practice facility I sometimes visit during my lunch break, it’s one of two people... a retired guy who thinks he shouldn’t have to share because he’s there every day and you’re not. He’ll scatter half a bucket of balls around a hole to make sure no one else can even think of putting to it. Or, there’s a teenager being instructed buy a parent who’s charting every putt. The girl isn’t allowed to think of hitting one without a training aid. She also can’t leave the green until she makes 10 three footers in a row. If they’re both there, everyone else has 2 holes to share.

This is a municipal par 3 course with a driving range and free practice green. Not a fancy practice facility.

Just don’t be the guy that thinks it’s mini golf and wants to putt to every hole.

Thank you.

That's not a problem...it's the guy "playing the course" that gets mad when you obstruct his "course" that's the problem.

Funny that this topic came up today. I was just playing at a course that hosted the NJ State high school tournament today. The players were all over the practice greens. My tee time was ahead of the them so I had a little time to hit some putts.

1. Yes, you can putt to the same hole. There are often more players than holes.

2. If you want to set up camp, hit putts from the outside of the green towards the hole so you're not blocking others from using the hole. And don't use many balls so that they block the hole from many angles. I'd limit it to 3 balls per person.

3. Limiting your distance depends on how the green is set up. I guess it's ok as long as you're not crossing other's lines.

4. I'll only chip when I have an area of the green to myself. I don't trust others to not skull one into my ankle so no, don't chip around a crowd.

With all the high schoolers on the green, I just found an area without much traffic and putted to old plugged holes and let them have the holes.

Do we really need etiquette Q+A as it relates to a putting green?

Just like in many other facets of life, just be respectful of your neighbors. Pretty simple

I started the topic because of some interactions that I observed between golfers on a couple of different occasions recently. I was interested to hear what others on WRX thought.

I struggle to understand why someone takes the time to complain about a topic they don’t find relevant rather than just moving on to another topic

I will say one thing that drives me absolutely nuts on the wedge/pitching/chipping green is people rapid firing range balls all over the place and then leaving. I take 5 or 6 balls and retrieve them after each grouping and fix any ball marks.

I'll watch guys come over, spray 20 or 30 in no discernible pattern and then rush off to head to the tee... It's not the range, other players have to cleanup you're mess to use that green... What is hilarious is that I will see people hit a few from the practice bunker and then watch as they meticulously rake it... But they will completely ignore the scattered mess of balls and pitch mark they leave in their wake on the green.

When at a junior tournament that has a shotgun start, the putting green is an interesting place to observe. I have seen some strange and rude behavior from parents in this situation.

i've seen a parent 'claim' a spot and a hole on the putting green till his son was done chipping on an adjacent green...by standing over the hole on the putting green while texting/using his phone.

A girl who plays locally has a dad that will do this. I spoke to him about it and he stopped, claiming he didn't know that it wasn't ok but did it again at another tournament. He's just an all around a**hole.

We have a guy who will take a bucket of range balls and chip several to each hole. Obviously only when the green is empty, but still annoying if you show up to practice and there are a bunch of balls around each hole. And who uses range balls to practice greenside?

Too many people, unfortunately. Yeah, I'm sure those balls will give you a good representation of how your ball is going to react on course that day.

My favorite is the guy that putts from one hole while basically standing on top of or right next to another hole. Even if there is no else out there, I always try to make sure I'm not blocking off more than one hole at a time.

I never fail to be shocked at how oblivious to others some people can be.

I joined a private club this year and so far everything's been aces. The only d_ck move I've seen so far has been a visiting student team player on the practice green. There are four holes cut and a few plug flags. Using the putting green was me, a lady and this high school preppy kid.

He took the flag out of two of the holes and layed them down close to the hole blocking them from our direction and proceeded to putt back and forth the 15ft between the two holes forcing me and the lady to share the two remaining holes.

If I wasn't a new member I'd likely have asked him WTF he thought he was doing. That was incredibly selfish and rude.
