Mid-Handicappers: What Ball Do You Play?

EZCUSE

Recommended Posts

Recycled (not refurbished) AAAAA, AKA mint, tour balls. Can't tell the difference from new. $1-$1.50 per ball. If you don't mind company or golf club logos and buy something a generation or two old, closer to or less than $1. Find a reputable seller and you have top quality golf balls and cheaper penalty strokes.

Doesn't it bother you not knowing where they found the ball and/or how long it was there before being found?

For the money, no, it doesn't bother me a bit. I'm sure there are a few balls per batch that are duds but I'm willing to accept that for the discount. I've sought out a few sources to confirm my economically motivated bias too....

It's a mental thing with me & one I've honestly struggled with since I went down this what ball do I want to play path 3 years ago. I can't get it out of my head of was this found in any body of water & if so how long was it sitting there before it was found.

Trying to find a way to be comfortable with it

I personally don't like recycled balls either, don't see the point when you can get new ones for cheaper when you find good deals and stock up on them. Currently playing Q Star Tour at $16/doz new.

Currently trying Cut Grey & White

You can’t go wrong with the 3-piece ionomer covered Gamer when they have the BOGO sale on Thursday. Hit it on a sale day and they are under $8 per dozen.

My favorite urethane ball is the Wilson Staff FG Tour. Budget Golf had the 2014 version for $24 per dozen for a short while and then jacked the price up to $32. Still a decent price.

Flash sale right now with BOGO on Gamers under $8 per dozen until 10:00 pm. Prior year Chromesoft under $30 per dozen too.

Been trying out the Duo Optix so far this year. I like the performance and feel but if you're choosing a color and caught between yellow and green, go with the green. Night and day visibility difference. The yellows were hard to follow and was even losing them in the grass if there's any dandelions around. The green is a whole different story...I can see that one a couple hundred yards away.

Have some of this years models Snell MTBs to try out as well but haven't pulled them out yet. Bought a sampler pack of the red and black so we'll see how they compare to last years.

If you like the Duo Optix, I noticed Academy Sports has the Green TM Noodle. Is the Optix very soft like the regular DUO or does it have some firmness. I do like the green colors.

I’ve got dozens of urethane Zstars, Pro Vs and Kirkland’s in the stash but I’m committed to playing Gamer Softs exclusively to see if playing just one ball improves overall play. I started using the GS as a winter ball and loved it. Shot a personal best of even par with it this spring. They’ve performed so well, I probably won’t switch back to urethane until my 8 dozen GS are depleted.

I bought 100 Prov1/x AAA lake balls for a great price. Ive used them through April and May.

I enjoy variety so Ive also used Wilson DX2, Toursoft, Trusoft, Callaway and Srixon softs etc.

Findings. All are great balls, none make any difference at all to my game, the best feeling around the green are actually Dx2 at 28 lbs compression.

Im likely to play ProV at the price I got them, and various "softs" from anybody. I don't expect any to change my game.

What should I play in a tournament tomorrow? Mid 80's, chance of T storms. Heard the greens are slow. Modified best ball.

Gamer Soft

D2 Straight

D2 Distance yellow

PD Long

TF XL

Softfli orange or white

Would say D2 Straight out of that bunch. Played D2s for quite a while, still have several in the shag bag.

I called it the Duo Optix but the actual name is the Duo Soft Optix so yeah, it's pretty soft. Haven't played the regular DUO in a long time so I couldn't say for sure but I'm guessing yes it's softer.

Have some peoject-a and z-stars. Saving those for a nicer course.

D2 Straight could work.

If you're playing best ball, go gamer soft or D2 off the tee. Then go project A for approaches and putting.

Went with the D2 Straight. Only lost one off the tee due to a bad pull into a tree near a hazard. Have new wedges that really scuff the cover. I think that would happen to any ball.

Greens were really slow. Made one long birdie putt, but a lot of putts were left short. More spin may have helped on a couple iron shots. We were 6 or 8 shots out of the prize money so it wasn't the ball. Tournament was kind of rigged when you had some older guys who hit it long playing gold tees so they were 30 to 50 yds ahead of us playing their second shot.
