bending a PM grind from 56 to 53

Recommended Posts

I have Callaway PM grinds in 58 and 64, and was interested in taking a 56 and bending to 53. I know that will lower the bounce, but it would be primarily for full and knock down shots, and only used on occasion for bump and runs. Does anyone see any major playability issues with it if I bend it from 56 to 53? Just curious from the experts on here that have perhaps done this with one wedge or another.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Curious about this as well. Been a life long Vokey guy, but have been doing a lot of experimenting with the Hi Toe and the PM.

Are the Callaways forged or cast? A cast wedge will snap if you are not extreeeemly careful. 3 degrees is a lot to ask for.

Unless you just love the PM grind esthetically, there is no reason to play a high toe wedge on a club you don’t lay open.

The point of the high toe is to have some extra material out there for laid open lob shots when the ball tends to come off the high toe area more often than not.

That said, of you just like look of the club, (I don’t), then bend away. You will make it a bit diggy losing all that bounce, and you will have some face regression. The leading edge migrates backward in relation to the hosel when bending strong.

Most people avoid bending more than 2 degrees because of breakage potential, bounce change, and face progression or regression. I would never bend strong because I’m a digger and I LOVE bounce. I bend all my stuff a degree or two weak to add bounce.

Im going to order it that way from Callaway. I have an inquiry into my head pro to ask them if they can do it. Id probably settle with 54, but play 52 now, so I was going to try and get in the middle.

That isn't the only benefit of the high toe. It adds a little more weight to the top, so it is easier to flight balls down, IMHO.

I dig a little, so I may bend 2, and then grind it a little to get some relief. Or, if the overall response here is negative, Ill order and MD4 in 52, bent to 53.

Your also in OH it looks like. Here in AZ, where the lies are tight and the ground is pretty firm, lower bounce is typically preferred. Maybe not 3 degrees lower, LOL, but I don't know too many good players here that have higher bounce preferences

They're a soft casting so you can probably bend it. The only thing is I feel the PM grind has a decent amount of offset already, and bending it 3* stronger is going to add even more offset, if you can handle that aspect of it then you shouldn't have too many issues.

You need to get a 52 or a 54 and bend it. Bending is for tweaking a club, not reengineering it.

Quite correct. The common turf conditions you play is quite important. Other than late fall most of our courses are pretty lush and soft.

I actually played a PM grind 58 when they came out bent to 60 to add more bounce. Played it for the better part of a year. Worked just fine but I honestly despise the way they look. Went to a Vokey sm6 56-14 and a Vokey 60-08 bent to 62. Lots of lovely bounce!

  • 3 weeks later...

I just did this. My club builder had no issues but he said the 56 was actually 55 to begin with.

I can't notice the additional offset. Will by playing with this for the first time later today, but I know other guys have done this.

The 56 turned down to 53 is the used club. For comparison is an unused stock 58.

That looks pretty good. I ordered an MD4 raw 54, bent to 53. So far, I like it.
