Putting your name on your bag?

Recommended Posts

Just read the Golf Digest article about the 10 things wrong with your bag (https://www.golfdigest.com/story/10-things-wrong-with-your-golf-bag) and one of the things was that we shouldn't be putting our names on the bag.

Personally, I put the logo of a tournament I run as well as my last name on the ball pocket panel.

Am I out of touch for doing this?

That was a dumb article. No clubs over 5 years old? Really!? And while only carrying 6 balls makes perfect sense for a decent golfer I know plenty who would have a tough time getting through 18 on that ration.

Now name on the bag, couldn’t care less. I don’t have it done, don’t even have initials on my Mackenzie, but if I order another one sometime (which I’m considering) I may go for the initials on that one. I do have my initials on my putter. Most of the time when I see this it’s ex high school or college golfers still playing their old team bag (usually a Hoofer), but if you like your name on your bag I say go for it. Never a chance of getting it mixed up with someone else and I feel like it has the chance of deterring a theif a little.

Personally, when I see name/initials on a bag or any golf gear (e.g., putter, wedge) I think it's kind of pompous. I see it as reserved for tour players, and even then what's the point? Everyone knows who they are. Now for advertising purposes as OP mentioned, I think that's smart.

I like it.

My nephew has his name on his bag including his middle initial "T" which somehow looks more like a "7" . It starts many hilarious conversations when we play with others. Who usually ask why did your parents give you the number 7 for a middle name ? Or is 7 your handicap? Did you parents watch a lot of Seinfeld? It's a great icebreaker.

I guess this makes me a dope:

How well has this stood up to use?

Very well. It is simply heat transfer vinyl. My wife got a Cricut about a year ago. I was actually looking for some one local to do the embroidery. But it was hard to find someone with the exact font and reasonable cost. Then i realized I could do my own heat transfer with the Cricut. I have since added a small Texas flag as well.

i'd like to tell golf digest what part of me they could kiss.

i also love the last paragraph where they quote mr. webb simpson, king of shanks, that most amateurs need more forgiveness in their irons.

I used to think name on bag or initials on putters were for pros or elite am's but I'm coming around to the idea of it with theft the way it is these days. If there are a row of golf bags sitting next to each other I'd like to think a punk looking to steal and flip a quick profit would likely take a bag without a name on it before mine. It would also be easier to identify something of mine on craigslist/ebay if it had some identifiable marks. I don't have any name or initials on my equipment but I wouldn't rule it out.

I don't have my name on my day-to-day golf bag.

But I needed a good, light carry bag for travelling & golf holidays away, so I bought a Ben Hogan BH1 Stand Bag. At the time, there was a promotion by the company to put your name on it for free - so I did!

I quite like it. I don't have any trouble finding my bag, my playing partners always know my name (even if I can't remember theirs), but it does make me feel somewhat self conscious at times.

Anyway, the best thing about it is that I have my name and Ben Hogan's on the same bag!

This is an exception and different rules apply if on a team, until that bag breaks, you’re money.

The GD article was a waste of time. Do what makes you happy. I have my three initials on my ball pocket and at the bottom of my driver head cover. They are the same three initials of my daughters My older daughter marks her golf ball with them and my youngest daughter has them on her head cover that she painted. I got a white leather Stitch 3 wood cover that I gave to her and she decorated with it initials and other girlie things. It looks real nice. I have thee bag tags on my bag all three from golf outings that were special to me. I just don't se that are a special set of rues bout a bag tat amateur should follow. I even ate it when someone get's grief over iron covers as long as he doesn't slow up he round wit them who cares.

I had my name put on the ball pocket of my Hoofer. No one will ever mistake me for a Ping staff member. Actually, I wish everyone would do it because I have a hard time remembering names on the first tee at the local muni.

Oh man that article is probably one of the worst things I've ever read. According to him I need to replace my hybrid and woods because current technology is going to get me more distance and accuracy? My s*** swing isn't going to be fixed by clubs. I also regularly play at a course that has water on 23 out of 27 holes. On a bad day I can easily go through 6 balls so do I just leave for the day?

Just to save people a click here is roughly the list of things wrong.

Things wrong with your bag:

Cannot have name on bag

Cannot have multiple tags from multiple courses

Update clubs older than 5 years

14 way dividers are apparently unacceptable

You NEED a range finder (I personally have a hard time playing without one now, but I've seen plenty of people get on fine without one)

Can't have extra items in your bag because walking is the only acceptable way to play (including only having 6 balls max)

Must have rain glove

Only having 14 clubs to choose from (I guess he wants everyone to pickup extra clubs depending on course conditions. Personally I only know of 2 people that switch out clubs depending on course.)

Personally I think having all your clubs personalized and bag and clothing and all of that is fine if you really want to. Go ahead and have head covers on your irons too it's your bag. I don't know that I would ever be interested in personalizing things too much other than maybe a ball marker or pitch fix tool since I like the idea of having the option to resell if I want to.
