Is there any particular disadvantage with playing iron shafts from a few years back?

I’ve had TT Dynalite Gold Superlite shafts (about 105 grams) for my mizuno mx25’s for years and I like them. I picked up a cheap set of mizuno jpx850’s on eBay for kicks and giggles. They have graphite shafts at like 70 grams, and I discovered that I don’t like the light shafts. Just messes up my swing.

I’m thinking of finding some cheap steel pullouts from eBay for these Jpx 850s. It seems like regular steel at 105grams suits me well. Is there any particular downside to playing this 10-15 year old iron technology? There are other 105 gram regular shafts I could try, but would prefer to stick with dynalites if there’s no particular advantage to changing.

Hate to say it but steel shafts haven't changed much overall. There are some newer/different weights and bend profiles out there but the raw material steel is still steel. Only so much you can do with it. The Dynamic Gold shaft that is out today is the exact same shaft it's been for 25+ years now. Nothing wrong with using a steel shaft you're comfortable using from a few years ago. I've been playing the KBS Tour shaft in my irons since it came out about 10 years ago.

All that matters is whether or not the shaft suits your swing and your game. Every Pro on tour playing Dynamic Gold shafts (which is a LOT) is playing decades old technology.

Dynamic gold is as good or better than anything that has come out since they came around. I can't imagine playing anything else as i have tinkered in the past. They are tried and true and i know exactly what to expect from them.

Shafts don’t deteriorate overtime then?

I’ve 18 year old Dynamic Gold S300s in my current set and whilst their suitability is now questionable, is the quality/integrity/performance of the shaft still good almost 20 years later?

I’ve got a set of MacGregor VIP Limited’s from the early 1970s with original Tourney Taper shafts and they play just fine...they’re a little stout and as heavy as rebar but they play great.

Not unless they have been compromised by rust, no. And in that case you would know on account of the fact the club would be in two pieces. :D

I play 30 year old shafts because they are what I remember from when I played junior golf and I love the feel of them, i've just scaled the flex up accordingly.

No. My current irons are with their factory shafts and they's a almost 30 years old and I don't notice any deterioration in performance. Just don't subject them to a lot of moisture which could cause them to rust from the inside. Graphite shafts could deteriorate over time if you subject them to high temperatures (like inside a car trunk) for long periods of time which could weaken the epoxy that is between the layers of graphite.

As long as your launch parameters are where you want them, and you can control the club as desired, play them. There's no advantage to changing what is optimal. Now saying that, this may give you the opportunity to go to the store and try some other things first before committing to anything. If you're changing shafts anyway, make sure you're playing what's best for your game.

The largest issue here is, not whether the steel shaft still good for service, but if the shaft suit the lighter heads in the JPX850. Mizuno has different head weight for steel shaft or light weight graphite shafts.

Shaft itself will not change over time unless it was bent, rusted......

I've used the Dynalite Gold XP shafts for quite a while. Got the first set as pulls from Mizuno. These have been superseded by TT XP115 which has an almost identical step pattern. I imagine the TT XP105 would be very similar to what you are used to.

Are those heads taper tip? I'm not sure how Mizuno does graphite iron shafts.

This. You will have swingweight issues with the new shafts, probably up 4 points or so. Although depending on the starting point that may not be a bad thing. But if it puts the swingweight too high, it is tough to really lower it.
