The "Stork Drill" is MONEY

I'm a lifelong OTT fighter. I feel the inside move for a while, but under pressure or out of practice and that old move creeps back in.

 

I saw some instructor mention this "Stork Drill" a few weeks ago. After a raunchy ball-striking round I thought it would be worth a try.

 

After a short range session, I'm convinced that this will be a part of my warmup routine from now on. Not only does it help you find the inside path, it causes you to feel the motion of the hands turning over on the follow through. Good stuff.

Feet together is a great drill as well. I like doing them both.

I once worked a Nicklaus/Flick school at Spyglass Hill years ago and Flick had all the slicers doing this drill. Works great.

Agreed. Good drill. I think its better than feet together drill as it promotes hitting from the inside/shallow so it helps for people who are steep and over the top and has more carry over to the actual swing than feet together drill, in my experience anyways.

That's what I'm feeling, for sure. It's helping me come from the inside on a shallow path with my hands low and close to my thighs.

 

I know this is a total cliche, but yesterday when I was alternating Stork swings and normal swings, I was hitting the best iron shots right away.

 

I was hitting from a fluffy spot in the middle of a driving range, so the grass was showing me where the ball struck the face, and so many of my full shots were right on the sweet spot. The misses were coming off the toe, and tended to happen when my hands got higher and I got the toe down and caught the ball fat. Trying to keep my hands really low was working like crazy.

Another range session yesterday around the Stork Drill. I hit 7 irons and drivers. After warming up, I was alternating one "stork" shot for each normal shot.

 

I've noticed that in order to execute the stork shot correctly, I need to be a little closer to the ball. This has carried over to my setup for the normal shots, and seems to be good for me.

 

I hit some of the nicest drives I've ever hit. Nice high draws, right on the target line. It felt like I was hitting the sweet spot on my driver for the first time. Less effort, better results. Fun!

My instructor has me doing this to work on opening my hips more on the downswing. He also says I need to basically bump my hips more to start the downswing - get my left hip moving ‘up’, at least how it feels for me. I’m working with this drill but does anyone have any recommendations for complimentary drills?

My pro has me using the stork drill, not against OTT, but against bottoming out behind the ball, and it works wonders!

I don't feel anything like that. I don't go after it that hard when I'm doing the drill, which is another benefit probably. The ball still goes about 60-70% as far as a good full swing. That right there indicates how much power is generated from a proper path and release.

No... didn't realized he mentioned getting it from someone else, maybe missed that video out of the many he has mentioned it in. I just think they refer to it as the flamingo drill, even though no one else calls it that, because they are trying to make it seem original from them, which is certainly not the case. Maybe I am just being cynical, HAHA!

 

Just not a fan of Be Better Golf anymore and I think Tony is a bit over rated as an instructor, but great guy.
