How Do You "Beat The Heat"

Recommended Posts

I hate it also. No matter what you do - cold towels, frozen frogg towel things, lots of cold water, umbrella - none of that matters with the wrong mindset, it will still all be a struggle and extra things taking your mind off the game. I only play good in heat if I can embrace it. Be the one guy out there saying "oh man this sweat is fantastic, I love this tan I am getting".

Wear shorts, a polyester shirt, and a hat. Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol. If you walk, consider mounting your umbrella on your push-cart for some portable shade.

Start drinking water now and don't stop until you're done on Saturday.

Take advantage of shade every chance you get. Umbrealla and a full brim hat can create some in a pinch, but I find it to be about impossible to golf in an Aussie hat.

UA and Adidas both make mesh shorts that look like golf shorts. I feel 15 degrees cooler in a pair of those versus normal shorts.

Hydration is key! I am in Louisiana and it’s regularly 100 with lots of humidity. I drink tons of water but also add electrolyte tablets such as NUUN or other brands you can get at GNC. I noticed a huge difference when I added them. Also I like some sort of caffeine stimulant around the turn to pep me up for the back 9. No matter how much water you drink that kind of heat just zaps you. Light shoes that aren’t waterproof, quality material shorts and shirts. No cotton anywhere!!! Sweat wicking socks and underwear are crucial, bucket hat. I don’t give a damn what it looks like. It keeps the sun off my ears and neck.

A couple years ago, I got a wild idea that I tried and now I do it several times a year when its really hot. I take a small cooler, fill it with ice and water and put two wash cloths in there. About every other hole, I take one of the wash cloths, wring it out and put it on top of my head under my hat. Then I just remember to switch the washcloths every hole or two. Works awesome!

Also wet ice towels soaked in Florida water is legit. Find it at your local Walgreens.

Who the hell walks when it's 90 degrees out? I'm not walking when it's above 70 and I'm not going outside when it's above 90 if I can help it. I just sweat way too much and it's no fun.

It's not bad when it's a dry heat.

I do it all the time, in California.

I'm sure people in similar climates, like Arizona would agree that walking is manageable despite high temps.

Hydration is key, and by that i mean way before your round. The night before, chug plenty of water.

Really surprised at how many people sleep on this fact. When I trained to run a marathon, the trainer would tell us if you start to feel dehydrated and your body is exhibiting symptoms of dehydration - its too late, you are already dehydrated. Chugging water at that point is going to have very limited or even potentially adverse affects.

People always say drink during the round, which is great. But also eat something. Personally I think the greatest golf snack are the Smuckers Uncrustables PB+J sandwiches. They are frozen and perfect for sticking in your bag. If I'm playing a tournament and I know its going to be slow out, I'll eat one after the 5th/6th hole and one @ the 12th.

BTW I walk all summer in DC temps. Push cart with the unbrella up, its definitely manageable.

Once you feel dehydrated you are far beyond gone... it's about your preparation and then attempting to maintain electrolyte levels during play. I agree with the Smuckers Uncrustables PBJ sandwiches. Keep frozen and throw one in your bag when you play golf. By the time you take it out mid round it will be thawed. Great snack.

Life Hack... picked this up from AJGA kids and Tour caddies... start 2 days before and continue during tournament rounds, drink the entire quart in the evening before you go to bed. PIck up Walgreens brand or Dollar Tree branded PEDIALYTE, yes the stuff given to babies and kids when they get dehydrated. I prefer Walgreens dye-free grape usually 2 for $8. I can attest when playing the in the PGA Tour's Memphis St. Jude Classic 3 times... it's 95º and 70+% humidity. This works!!!!

Additionally I also keep a few packs of "Drip Drop" in my bag. It's a medical grade electrolyte packet that mixes with 8 oz. of water. Decent flavor and when used just chug it all. It can be used as a supplement when playing but isn't cheap. This also can be found at Walgreens.

1) Don’t listen to the fools on here that say, “with this new technology these pants are actually cooler than shorts.” This is garbage.

2) Mission or Frogg Togg towels that stay cool

3) If you know it’s going to be hot, hydrate a lot the whole day before and first thing in the morning. Being dehydrated adds about 10 degrees to the temperature.

Hydrate, use sunscreen, and stay out of the sun as much as possible. It'll be a nice 106° tomorrow for my tournament and living in the desert, you just accustom yourself to constantly being hydrated. I'll drink a little extra throughout the day today so I avoid headaches and the lethargy that inevitably shows up if I don't. If you have to pull out the umbrella when you're around the green, then do it.

I second the Pedialyte suggestion... If i know I'm going to be out for an extended period in the heat... I always drink that before... and after

As a walking golfer, I use a push cart and attach my golf umbrella to it. Might look stupid on the course when roll up to the first tee box, but by the second hole I don't look half as dumb.

A few other tips that work for me:

1. Wear light colors, light fabrics.

2. Get a pair of great walking shoes like True or Ecco. All those ounces add up, even if you drive around in a cart.

3. Hydrate! I bring two huge canisters of water and use Nuun supplements to replenish electrolytes and potassium. https://nuunlife.com/hydration/

Lower humidity here in SE AZ, but when in the 90s it's still warm.

Lighter colored clothes help, as does my little neck snake that I soak in water and tie around my neck before the round.

Umbrella on the Clicgear, light shoes, and plenty of water. For me, I can suffer from low blood sugar during the hotter days so I keep an emergency soda in the bag as well as the water.

Above 100 (rare here) I will ride.

it's been dry, hot and humid down here for the past month or more. I've actually played my rounds during the hottest time of the day. easiest way is just hydrate - wear light clothes - park in the shade - don't think about it. the more you think about it - the worse it's going to be. DRINK A LOT OF WATER.

Hydration, sun sleeves, vented Tilley hat and having a sunproof umbrella over my head every possible moment that I am not actually swinging a golf club (ie about 3 hours out of a 3-1/2 hour round I am under shade). That is sufficient for me until heat index reaches mid-90’s.

Beyond that point I also occasionally during the round cool my head, face and neck with a washcloth soaked in ice water. In extreme conditions I will supplement my constant water drinking with a Gatorade at the turn to replentish electrolytes.

And no alcohol on golf days!

like a few people mentioned already, make sure you hydrate the day BEFORE your round as well as during and after. I also agree about the sunscreen, bucket/boonie hat, ice-soaked towels to wrap around your neck, sunglasses, and comfy+light weight shoes if you plan on walking. Additionally, i always wear a long sleeve compressons shirt meant for hot weather underneat my polo (nike dri-fit, under armour, etc...). I've played in light weight pants in high 90 degree weather before with no issues but mostly wear shorts. Preparation is the key and definitely avoid alcohol until you get ot the club house

I walk until it hits 100*. Hydration is critical. Drink a ton of water. When you think you've drank enough water, drink more. I carry a 24 oz metal water bottle and fill it up 4 to 5 times per round and it's not nearly enough.
