I'm at 44.5" on my 917 D2 (and have been for years, same shaft in the 910/915/917) - I made a grip change over the winter and have been gripping down a little bit on all clubs and have noticed more consistent center-face contact with the driver. As an experiment, I have an Even Flow Blue 75 6.0 on the way from Titleist (and a 16 gram neutral weight) that will play at 44" in the driver.

I've long preferred to play driver at 44.5" maximum, usually 44". I've tried going to 45" several times over the last 15 years, with disaster setting in each time.

Several years ago, I had a fitting session to go along with getting a Louisville Smart Driver reshafted. In the fitting, it came out that I swing a 43" or 43.5" club 3mph faster than a 44.25" club, even with steel in the shorter club. It took me several years to get around to making a serious effort at trying a recent model stick at 43.5", now that I have, ive fully joined Club Jag; I'm cutting down all sorts of sticks to 43.5".

Latest effort is an XCG7 Beta, the clubhead cottonballed to bring the weight up (prefer D5 swing weight).

For shaft weight, I've always preferred heavier shafts. I will look for 80g or even 90-100g if I can find it.

Last comment, 3w is preferred at 42.5"

I play 44.5" with a 65 (ish) shaft. I've thought recently about building a higher lofted 44" driver with a relatively stiff 75ish gm shaft, trying to make driver optimized for control on tight courses.

hmm...maybe my 11.5* 983k with a stiff 75gm V2 at 44" (I'm feeling it now). Maybe carry it along with my regular driver...

I tried a 44.5 ADDI 7X this weekend in my M4 and had good results. I added 6 grams of lead tape but might throw a couple more grams on before my next round. I definitely had more consistent contact and didn't notice any distance loss. I actually hit a couple as far as my best drives would be in the summer and its only 50 degrees here in the Australian winter. I think i will eventually get the Head hot melted once i get the desired weight dialed in. I had always choked down a bit on the driver anyways and at 44.5 i find i can take a normal grip and just swing away.

I'm playing mine around 44.25" with a shaft that should be to heavy and stiff for me (matrix 8q3 strong flex) at 86 grams, but it's working great. Yesterday I was actually able to start the ball at very specific targets and work a slight draw off the tee box. That never happened with longer, lighter shafts. With the matrix old 6q3 I could bomb some big high tee shots in the general direction of the fairway but with no accuracy. Distance is the same whatever length I play. I'm not a big guy (5'6", 165 lbs). Pretty fit and strong but not overly aggressive with my swing. Swingweight is D-4 with Cobra bio cell+ head(206 grams).

The driver I've been using for the past year and a half is 43.75", but I just had another driver cut down to 44.75" to experiment with. I am trying to settle on a length between those two. My 3 wood was cut to 42.25" with a tip weight added.

I would term it a success. I fought hooks with it for the first several holes, possibly from having been playing a ProtoPype lately (LOL). Straightened the tee ball starting on hole 8 and it was good from there forward. Powered thru the wind well (12-15 mph), reasonable distance and pretty good accuracy. Accoustics were lovely as well, though I didn't have a complaint about the sound pre-cotton balls.

Played it at 10.5* setting, 43.5", Motore F3 80 X, untipped.

Tend to hit 44.5" driver much more consistently than longer lengths, also play 42.5" 3 wood- have played same for years and certainly don't anticipate any need to make a change.

How does someone determine that a shorter shaft would be better? I've been fit for shafts standard length but I choke down most of the time with my driver.

Refer to this post. It is gold. Howard is the man.

For me it was easy. I'm only 5'8" so it was pretty much common sense to go shorter.

That DIY was written for all of you who dont have access to a good club fitter, or simply want to do it yourself.

Yes there is lots of info, but i did not want to leave out anyting, and make sure the reader could understand how and why...

Unless the shaft or head is way off from what you should have played, you should be able to get to Trackmans optimum numbers, and if shaft and loft is a good fit, you get over and beyond those numbers (they are NOT max numbers, thats why its possible to get beyond them)

I am guessing 44.5 is the sweet spot for most, not 44" or 45"?

At 44.5", it is much easier to hit and control but I don't get the bombers.

I just ordered a G400 Max at 44.75" yesterday. I had a G25 at stock 45.75" length and hit it pretty well, but I could always use a bit more consistency. Hopefully PING can get me the D3 swingweight I requested with no issues. I'm really looking forward to the G400 Max. My G25 was a superb driver, but unfortunately I cracked the head the other day. No its not.

For players who fits "standard" lenght in irons, MOST of them will performe the best with 44.00"

If irons is plus 0.5" from std, we can add the same on the driver and then we gets 44.50"

Only players with a natural flat swingplane and really good eye to hand skils will end up longer than this, and thats why the most common play lenght for drivers on the tour has been 44.50", but they are all better ballstrikers than most members here

M3 with 44.5 Motore Tour Spec (Most Consistent I have ever been...snap hooks are gone and for the most part so is that little over the top move I used to like to make some times). All out best drive is probably a little shorter. But, my driving average would be significantly longer with the shorter shaft. The ball rolls further in the fairway than it does in trees :-).

3W- Rogue with HZD Yellow 1/2 inch short of stock. This thing feel like a board and never feels like I am loading it. But, it is straight and stupid long for a 3W being hit by me.

I am 100% sold on the shorter shafts in these two clubs. Playing partner yesterday...47 inch in a TM head. Just depends on what works for you of course!

Another brief update... Enjoying the XCG7 Beta quite a bit. My distance is returning to levels which I was accustomed to seeing when playing driver at 44"-44.5". As I hoped, the drop in length has resulted in accuracy with no cost in distance.

I'll repeat myself; I may be an anomaly, I doubt many swing a 43.25" steel shafted club faster than a 44-1/8" 90g graphite shafted club. For those whose club speed plateaus around 43.5-44, I think it's a worthy effort in experimentation.

And the XCG7 Beta is crazy good. Severely underrated for its low spin characteristics.
