Taylormade V-Steel: Band of Brothers

Would one of the chemical paint stripping products get the job done? Honest question, I'm not familiar enough with either club paint removal or such chemical products....

I’ve used stuff like that for paint fill, but never for the entire club head. Sanding the club is actually super simple and shouldn’t take too long. It’s going to be scratched up due to being sanded but it doesn’t take long to do.

That’s what I used to strip the paint off of mine. It will not take it all off and will require some elbow grease to remove it all. I lightly used a fine grit sandpaper to finish.

Thanks that is the exact look I'm going for. So paint strip and light sand- what grit did you use? What direction did you sand, front to back?

I don’t remember exactly what grit but any really fine/extra fine should work. You may have to use a medium grit to get some of that paint off then finish sand with fine grit. Also I went from heel to toe and taped up the face and sole because those parts were in nearly new condition...the painted part was another story.

I used an old metal dog bowl that was deep enough to submerge the clubhead up to the hosel. It will take some time for the paint to strip off and I also used a plastic scraper to help, but it didn’t last long until the paint stripper softened it up and it was useless.

I appoligize if this has been covered in here, but what was the factory stock lenth for the 3wd when these came out?

I just picked one up for 20 bucks and although it has a stock reg shaft it only measures 41.75. Which noticeably shorter than my other 3wd.

It setup great in the store and since it had a newer grip and headcover I figured it was a no brained to try out. Always had trouble finding a 3wd.

43" for graphite and 42.5" for steel.

So if the one I picked up has been cut 1.25 in down to 41.75. In theory it will stiffen the flex up a bit???

A little bit. If it's the stock shaft you'll want to re-shaft it anyways.

Had it out on the course today and it was great. Probably only 5-10yrds shorter than current offerings. But I put 3 outta 4 right where I wanted. Felt nice and crisp. I'll take consistantcy anyday.

Just got "my old friend" out and put it back in the bag. Like a long lost lover. I keep wanting to get something new because they are longer, but it has been a huge mistake. I ordered a 5 and 7 from callaway preowned today for 30 dollars shipped.

My V-Steels have been in my bag a long time. Extremely hard to kick them out. I’ll take accuracy over 10-15 yards of distance all day.

Proud owner of a V-Steel! Just got mine in today. I've hit this in the past and liked it, and finally decided to buy one on a whim. Also I was feeling cheap.

After experimenting with several other "2nd clubs" recently, I have put my 15* V-steel with a YS-6+ back in the bag. Nothing else seems to be as consistent - it just wants to fly high and straight. It does launch a bit higher than I like when its windy, but I'd rather play a club that I need to work to flight down, rather than a club I struggle to get in the air. Off the tee and into the wind, I'm usually bunting a driver anyway.

And the turf interaction "just works" for me.

Oddly enough, I found that "tour" stamped model, to not be nearly as stiff of a bend profile through middle and lower sections, as compared to the standard "Blue" design.

I'd be interested to hear what you think after trying it

Putting my 18* w/ Purple Ice back in the bag, finally got it through my thick skull that have always hit best fairway wood shots with this paired with a 300 tour 15* that is similarly shafted. The V steel 18* is simply the best 5 wood for my game ever.

Just did a search of best fairway wood ever and came across this amazing thread...

So I have a V-steel 3 wood with an old Grafalloy ProLite shaft, it is the oldest club in my bag. This year I decided to replace it with the M2 2017 since it had some great reviews. After hitting the M2 for a few days now I absolutely cannot stand it. It is large and hard to hit off the deck, nothing like my V-steel. The V-steel also seems to be about 10 yards longer than the M2 for me. Just amazing since it’s been over a decade since these came out.

I had an old R580XD TP driver than had a Grafalloy Blue "Tour" shaft in Stiff flex. It felt light years better than the original Blue. Totally night and day difference. Replaced the Tour Blue with a GD Purple Ice. Still play it. :)

Ditto. My 18 degree 5 wood is one of the best clubs I have ever used period. It is the go to fairway that I can hit straight and high or shape as required. Can't even recall how long I've been playing it but it has seen a lot of other clubs come and go. That's for sure.
