Club Painting Hogan and Muirfield Pics

Recommended Posts

My 5 year old son and I had a great time going to several Goodwills and other thrift stores doing some “Hogan Hunting”. We found a Hogan Special Sand Wedge that as a bit rough. Also found 4 Nicklaus Muirfirlds (6,7,8,9) in good shape.

The SW was rough but I bought it to practice some club painting. I painted “Ben Hogan”, “Special”, and the BH logo. I was really pleased with how they came out. I also painted the soles of a few more. They all look good but the red on the Apex ll 2 Iron is VERY red.

I am considering painting the Muirfiled portion and the Diamonds on the face gold and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on it and club painting in general. I am not an artistic person but found this really fun and relaxing.

I used Testors paint with some fine tip brushes. Anyone else paint clubs and if so, how do you do it.

Ha! Teaching the young one the "fine art" of putzing around with classic clubs. At 5 years, learning paint fill. At 6, he'll be reshafting. Good for you.

Looks like you have the paint fill thing down. Looks good from this vantage point. Most all classic irons that are going to remain in inventory get freshened paint fill.

I typically use CitriStrip paint strip (safe) to remove all the old fill. Pick at any stubborn paint in lettering with an X-Acto knife point. Then two coats of paint fill. Adds depth and evenness to the fill. Wipe with Acetone and paper towels, making sure it's well dampened. Give it a week or so of "hardening" time before I play them. Typically a winter project so a non-issue. Pretty simple.

I've used Tamiya paint previously. Although have used Testor's as well. The Tamiya red seems to be a little darker. Also, I'll add some of the Mrs.' clear nail polish to the sole, the paint seems to wear off in that location. Probably will pick up some Tamiya clear to try next time I'm buying paint.

Oh my! Nice pickup on the Muirfields. They are on a bucket list of irons to try someday. Should be able to score a PW off eBay. Although the problem with that is one is likely to pay 3X as much for the singular club compared to what was paid for the remainder. Been there, done that.

Man your process seems much more legit. The tip about clear nail polished is money. I will add that step for sure. I will also check out Tamlya red. The Testors black and gold seem perfect. I didn't think I would be able to get a gold I would like so that was a good surprise.

I feel your pain on trying to complete a set. I am trying to find an Apex PC 7 and 3 Iron on eBay and it looks like I am going to be spending over $20 and most likely higher per club. Hard to swallow when I got the rest of the clubs for $1 each! I may try for a SW in that set as well which would add another $30-$40. It's getting steep for this Goodwiller.

My buddy might give me enough clubs to complete my Muirfield set. With what he said he would give me I would have a 2-SW set which would be awesome.

Be careful what you wish for. I'm a big fan of Hogan wedges and Apex PC irons, but I would not want an Apex PC SW in my collection at any price. Grotesque looking things.

I use nail polish. It's much easier to find the shades of colors that I want, easy to apply, and it lasts real well too.
