Golf Pride MMC - Slippery?

Bar_Stroll

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a new set of irons last week. I had held the Golf Pride MMC Plus 4 and took a few swings with the standard MMC and loved them so I bought the new irons with MMC Plus4. My new irons came in and I've now played 2 rounds with them and hit at the range twice.

The bottom of the MMC grip seems very slippery to me with my bare hand. The club has twisted badly in my hands a few times before or at impact. When I put my bare hand on the grip they almost seem wet even after I've dried them and dried my hands even though neither were wet to begin with.

Has any one else had this problem? Is there possibly a film on the grips from the factory? Maybe these aren't the best grips for high humidity (it was 84% when I played Saturday and is 85-100% all summer - Key West, FL)?

I feel like I need to get a rosin bag before my next outing.

My last set of club were Bridgestones which had there tour velvet type grip and I never remember having this problem.

Wash them down with warm water and some mild soap. After that, take some sandpaper and work the areas that seem a little slippery.

The lower hand portion of an MCC Plus 4 isn't exactly slippery but it is not a high-traction grip and is far less grippy than the upper hand section of the same grip. For several years I used first the standard MCC Plus 4 and later MCC Plus 4 Align. During the summers I had to constantly be wiping my bottom hand and the bottom half the grip with a wet towel to keep it clean. It got very slick if not meticulously clean.

I am not a fan of the grips just because of what you have described.

You shouldn't have to sand paper grips to make them to your liking. If you like a corded feel to your grip, the Lamkin Player's cord is very nice. It's not super tough/rough on the hands, but it will not slip at all, even when your hands are sweaty or in the rain.

If you like a slightly tackier feel, the Lamkin REL ACE are very nice. If you are dedicated to Golf Pride, tour velvet are okay but IMO the Lamkin 'tack' lasts longer than Tour Velvet. I've had my stock Velvet's on for about 4 months now and I'm already considering changing them out for REL's.

I'm in Tampa, so also hot and humid, and I have not noticed any issues with the MCC +4s. Overall they are great grips. Not sure why my results are different than what you are experiencing.

Yep, I lived in Tampa for a few years. That's where I started playing golf. Exact same conditions. The bottom is very slippery, like I said, feels wet when completely dry. I'm going to clean them real good and see what happens.

I have used the MCC standard for a long time, i play in PA which is hot and humid in the summer and then go down south for vacation. I have never had an issue with these grips slipping or feeling slippery.

Wipe them down with a wet micro fiber towel. Cotton towels tend to leave cotton fibers on the grips.

People rarely clean their grips. I clean my Align grips after every couple of rounds or after a practice session. I'm into a year and they show no signs of getting slick.

The other thing is that people get all sorts of crud on their grips and don't realize how it affects them. Sunscreen, bug spray, hair product (have in their hair and run their hands thru their hair without realizing it) and they all really screw up grips like MCC. Soap and water or my current favorite - Windex.

I don't think they are slippery, I live in Texas with humidity and I get steady palms and they work fine for me

I did try a Winn dritac at the store the other day and it felt very grippy, just wondering how well it does once the sweat drips on them, maybe you should give those a try

I have Winn Dritac on my driver and 3-wood and they are definitely very sticky in the same conditions (which was not soaked/rain, just humid). They just wear quickly and if that's what I end up doing then I'll just have to accept changing them more often which is no big deal.

Thank you for all the replies. It seems most think they are just fine and some have had similar issues and that can come from a multitude of variables. Like I said they are new and seemed slick from the get go. I'll clean them real good and see what happens. I don't want to change 9 brand new grips just yet so I'll use some patience and see what happens.

Something else I realized today, I got my new wedges from Cleveland the same day with the same grips and they did not seem slippery at all. The Clevelands came in a box without plastic wrapping. So my suspicion is they need a good cleaning from the way Callaway handled them or the plastic wrapping they came with. I'm guessing its residue.

I got my woods done at a different place then my irons. My woods came back slippery because they didn't clean them after they installed them. My irons came back feeling really nice.

One thing that I encountered a couple of years ago... Water softeners. I found out the hard way that some places (people) use water softeners and crank them up too high. Place I stayed at was that way and I cleaned my grips one day after a round. The next round I could barely hang on to the grips. Permeated right into the grips and I had a heck of a time getting rid of it.

For those that find these grips slippery.... Always buy the grey. Not the colors. What I was told by a clue repairman in Phoenix was that the grey is the rubber color. The blue orange red have a "paint"added to get the color and that is what slickens.

Makes sense. The blue ones that came with my Mizuno wedges were slick no matter how many times I washed and scrubbed them. My gray ones are fine as long as they are completely clean and dry.

This. I found I was having this same issue when playing the sky blue and later yellow multi compound grips. When I went to the platinum and whites, the problem disappeared. Tried the MCC +4 and didn't care for the squishy feel of the lower hand and switched over to Lamkin UTx. I find the UTx. to be a much tackier grip overall. In any event, if you're using the MCC or MCC +4 grips, stick with white or gray.

Did you say they came from Callaway?

I once got a couple clubs with the NDMC Whiteout grips from Callaway, brand new in plastic. It took me a lot of soap and scrubbing to make those grips playable, don't know what Callaway does to Golf Pride grips to make them slick and nasty but it's something that happens in the factory, apparently.

Yep, and this is exactly my thoughts on why they were so slick.

Not to be that guy but switch to Lamkin Z5 Tour Tapers they are a much better grip & way more tacky.

I can't stand the GP MC's for this reason & their compound just reacts with my skin in a weird ways.

  • 4 months later...

Put the grey +4s on this past spring. Played about 10 rounds or so this summer (Iowa) but practice a lot (especially short game and inside 125yrd wedges). Noticed with my wedges how slick the lower rubber was getting and gave them a good washing with warm soapy water. Didn't really help any. Longer clubs are still nice and tacky but wedges are borderline unplayable and mid irons are still good. If I had to make full swings with wedges I would have replaced them already. Would like to try scuffing them up with sandpaper (never heard of that). Can't believe with the price of these grips I couldn't get through one Iowa season (May - October this year).
