Well, they were mocking the annual fee, the hat, the bag tag... but that wasn't the crux of it. Hank Haney was going off on Mike Davis, interviewing him... not sure what the story is behind the bad blood. Not sure what the problem is in general with so many people not liking the USGA. Not saying we should like them, but see no real reason to hate on the organization either. They just are what they are.

I keep hearing a dislike of the USGA, but they can't wait to see the US Open.

When two idiots are talking to each other there's going to be bad results.

The boys are pissed they cant wear shorts....

Is that a USGA rule or a PGA Tour rule? I thought that was the PGA that made that mandate.

yeah there is no USGA rule against shorts for men that I am aware of. That is a PGA tour thing which imo uis stupid. I want to see shorts and brooks koepka in these:

Haney went off on them for not giving a bigger discount or free tickets to the veterans for getting into the US women's Open. That guy who calls his show is pretending to be Mike Davis. Her refers to him as the "Fake Mike Davis". I don't think Mike Davis has ever actually called the show. Haney really dislikes the USGA for all of the usual reasons.

Active duty and retired military with an ID can get in free to any practice round, no limit. With an ability to buy 4 tickets for friends and family who want to go with them, at half-price.

Does the U.S. Open offer a military ticket discount?

Yes, our military discount policy applies to the practice round days of the U.S. Open Championship for ACTIVE and RETIRED military. The military ticket policy covers all branches of service including Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, the National Guard and Reserves.

  • Tickets for Active Military are complimentary and can only be obtained at Will Call on June 11-13 (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). In addition, Active Military can purchase up to four (4) Practice Round tickets per day for family or friends at half price.

  • Tickets for Retired Military can be purchased at Will Call on June 11-13 at half price. In addition, Retired Military can purchase up to four (4) additional Practice Round tickets for family or friends for half price.

Active and Retired Military need to show military identification AND regular photo identification at Will Call in order to receive the military tickets for any of the practice round days.

Tickets for military will always be available on the practice round days.

The tour pros don't like the USGA. The guys at Augusta treat the players like royals; the US Open is a democratic golf tournament, and the pros are not treated as well as at other tournaments. No sponsor cars, etc. So the pros don't particularly like the USGA. And then you have rule situations like Dustin's ball moving on the green, and that was certainly a black eye. As have been some of the recent US Open set ups.

The USGA tries to make the hardest setup on golf, to try to determine the best champion. Many people who watch the US Open expect that, and even enjoy it for one week a year. It is hard to be liked when you are tasked with making the most demanding setup.

By the way, Haney is a tool.

The USGA has a tough job. They have to set up the courses to be right on the edge, and often times they go over the line. Other times the weather doesn't cooperate and they get Erin Hills last year. I still can't figure out the goal at Chambers Bay. Then they get hammered if things get out of hand, and rightly so. They are in a no win situation.

Yes, the tour pros are spoiled, and they don't have the perks of a regular tour event. I'm surprised they don't charge for range balls.

They cashed in with a new TV deal with Fox. I think Fox has done a pretty good job (after the fiasco with Norman), I don't blame anyone for maximizing their revenue. But I decided the USGA didn't need my $10 a year (or whatever it costs) since they should now be flush.

Long story short, if you want to find something to dislike about the USGA, it's a pretty easy target.

People seem to never forget the bad pin placement on the 18th hole at the Olympic (1998) where players were 3 putting from 3 feet. The fiasco at Shinnecock (2004) 7th hole is another one. But c'mon Phil let it go. Everyone makes mistakes. :D

I feel like Hank is always complaining about something in his show lately. Sounds like a crotchety old bastxxx.

That's kinda where I'm at with him. It's tedious to listen to him especially the way he talks, with his constant repeating of words in a sentence. And it seems he likes no one... not the USGA, not the Golf Channel announcers, etc. But all I really can think while he's talking is "Tiger fired your a** and you endorse crappy golf products." I find myself listening less and less, which is why I thought I missed something.

I'm waiting for him to yell, "get off my golf course you damn kids!"

they are hated on because of the way they actively manage to screw up the US Open every other year, be it no regards for fans at chambers bay to the asinine way they handled the dj situation to the way they allow the conditions to get away from them every few years or so ... they seem to have a knack for intruding on the world's golf stage as if they need to prove something to themselves/everyone else ...

People seem to resent that they do everything within their means to keep the winning score around even par. They've been messing that part up lately. Cough cough Erin Hills. :D

They are pretentious and out of tune with the modern players. Pack of power hungry geeks.

Geeks tend to provide data for their statements. The USGA just says things are horrible and need to be changed without going into much detail.

Square groove ruling which did nothing. Anchor ban which made the game less enjoyable for some amateur golfers. Talk of rolling back the ball for all golfers. Rules fiascos at mens and women's opens. What he was told about poor treatment of veterans, and lack of water at a hot and humid women's open. My father was a volunteer at a USGA event in the DC area, and it was also very hot, and the USGA was very lax in getting water to volunteers. The first part of this post was about some of the things Haney called the USGA out about.
