Experience with certain players at US Open...

Bryson Dechambeau: Definitely a new fan of his. He went out of his way to interact with all the kids while signing every autograph at clubhouse yesterday. He offered to take picture with my daughters and then afterwards, says "Hey, lets take a selfie too!". My girls didn't know who he was before but are still talking about him today. I heard another story about him from others while standing in line for Jason Day autograph later in the day where he apparently overhead someone's camera didn't work during taking a picture. So he came over and redid the pictures. Great guy!

Ian Poulter: So my last interaction with Ian was at last US Open at Bethpage. I posted my comments then on here about how he ignored the kids and quite frankly was rude compared to everyone else (practice round day). I got slammed for it and was told that he is there to play golf, he may been focused on the tournament, having a bad day, yada yada yada. Ok, so yesterday I watched about 10+ pros come through and were happily signing autographs and acknowledging each kid that said thanks, good luck, etc. Yes, Ian did walk through and sign everyone so can't argue that. But he did it looking like it was sooo painful, never looked up once (head down just signing to get through it), and never once opened his mouth to acknowledge any kid saying thank you or good luck. I am sorry, he seemed once again to be an Word not allowed when I compare him to everyone that came through.

Dustin Johnson: We were all waiting for his autograph around clubhouse as he was coming off 18. Took awhile and then showed up and unfortunately said he wasn't doing autographs as he did some as soon as he came off 18 and was on his way to do media. REally can't argue that and he was honest. Stinks the kids didn't get it, but also understand media obligations and someone like DJ being pulled in 100 directions.

Jason Day: Went through autograph session in Lexus tent with him and he was nice as can be. Long line and still took time to ask both my daughter's ther name, shake their hand and took multiple pictures. THe kids loved the aussie accent as well ;)

Overall, it was a great experience and the USGA did an awesome job providing stuff to include the kids. Every worker there, including all the volunteers, were so genuinely happy and pleasure to interact with all day!

It's understandable why some guys, like Poulter, seem more stuck up than others because at the end of the day, the golf course is their office and they're there to do work. Especially at a major like the US Open. With that being said, the guys who go the extra mile for their fans end up helping themselves in the long run because it means more sponsorship $$. The greatest example of that is Rickie Fowler. He's outgoing, personable, and stylish. Companies want to be connected to him. Think about all of the Cobra clubs and orange Puma hats that have been sold because of him. Ian Poulter has won twice as many tournaments as Rickie, but Rickie has made twice as much money.

Wow!

Guy signs autographs for everyone and he's an Word not allowed.

Guy doesn't sign autographs and it's totally understandable.

Other guy signs autographs as part of his obligations to one of his sponsors and he's nice as can be.

Fantastic. Just no pleasing some people with built in expectations of what people should do for them.

Is the rule that adults (or anybody over 18) can't try and get autographs? I get the whole eBay scam thing.... but when I was at womens US Open, I was approaching the women as they came into/off practice green for a quick autograph and they seemed okay with that.

The ol lady would die if I got Ricky's autograph or a picture with him.

Disappointed to hear that about Poulter, I have found him to be completely different from that. At the Ryder Cup in 2014, he could not be more obliging when it came to getting a picture.

I can't say I was a fan of Bryson but one of our juniors went to the drive chip and putt this year. I asked our pro and he said Bryson was a big standout. He spent a lot of time with the kids and was discussing their clubs. He made time for every kid.

I'm a fan now.

Exactly! He made 3 new fans yesterday with us for sure.

I can only speak for the one tournament I went to but at this years Masters there was a special spot near the practice range for kids only to get autographs. I thought that was pretty cool.

I like Ian...

Don’t care how he is when a major is on the line...

I doubt Michael Jordan was super fun before a finals...

He was there to rip everyone’s heart out...

Ian may not be Michael Jordan but he is wired the same way.

Some guys are affable even when everything is on the horizon(Phil and Arnie come to mind) while others are not...

I don’t care...he gave autographs....

Sorry he wasn’t cordial about it...

No expectations. But if you are going to sign autographs, don't sit there an ignore each kid as they say good luck and thank you. Not the manners teaching my kids, I know for sure. And DJ did sign on other side of clubhouse, just didn't do our side and quite honestly, I would say DJ's obligations are a bit more than Ian's. Just saying. I was providing my thoughts and that is two events, the same behavior.

Yeah, I think they tried to do that this year by putting green but no one really listened (adults everywhere in there) and seems pros were signing by clubhouse coming off course more than entering/leaving putting area.

I personally have no qualms about adults getting autographs, sometimes really cool. My only comment was that there were alot of adults in the section clearly designated for kids. The adults we were near by clubhouse were completely obliging; they moved over when possible for my daugthers to get in and had great conversations with them.

To be fair to Ian. He is who he is. And when he's on. It's only him and tiger.

I will accept that....

hmm ... golfers are asked to sign hundreds of autographs each week ... the fact that they don't look every kid in the eye and make them feel special is hardly a reason to call someone an 'a**', especially if that interaction is the only viewpoint one has ... i'll never forget jack Nicklaus at the pga/shoal creek as me and hundreds of kids jammed our visors/flags/etc in his face and begged for an autograph ... I've never asked for an autograph from anyone since ... does poulter need to pat each kid on the head and tell them how wonderful they are? ... most of the kids probably don't even know who he is; they're just getting an autograph from a pro golfer ...

I actually got to meet Jordan back in 2000 when I was 13. Saying Jordan wasn't super fun with fans would be putting it extremely mildly. It was the middle of summer (off season) and I attended his basketball camp outside of Chicago. He really didn't want to directly interact with the kids at all. Everyone was able to get 1 and only 1 item autographed. He had Upper Deck on site to immediately authenticate the autographs (which was pretty cool actually) but no one was allowed to take photographs with him. The only photo we were allowed to get was our team posing in a photo with MJ. I got to chat with MJ for about 30 seconds and he was cracking jokes and was fairly jovial. Unfortunately, the jokes were at the expense of a handicap kid on our team. Not cool MJ.... not cool at all.

I totally get the 1 autograph thing. We never would have played basketball if people could get anything they wanted signed. And the picture thing also made sense, although, it wouldn't have taken much more time to just pose for a 1 on 1 pic with the kids when he signed their ball or jersey during the autograph signing. I was a big sports memorabilia collector back then and chatted with one of the Upper Deck reps for a bit. He told me contractually, Jordan wasn't allowed anything unless a Upper Deck rep was there to authenticate.

With that said, Jordan put on easily the best basketball camp I ever attended. He was there for all 5 days coaching, hosting clinics, telling stories and even playing. He had some of the top college players in the country serve as the coaches of each of the teams. Our coach was a senior at Memphis at the time. Each day, he would pick a random camper to play a game (like around the world or horse, etc.) and if the kid won every kid in the camp would get a pair of jordans which he claimed weren't on the market yet. No one won but he was tossing out jordans as prizes for various things. On the last day of the camp he played a pickup game with all of the college players who were coaching. Some NBA guys joined in (Jerry Stackhouse was there) and played as well. It was a really cool experience watching the GOAT play in a tiny gym.

Ok, so maybe Word not allowed was a bit harsh. Not looking to have pro's interact and make each kid feel special. But as just normal manners, you can't say welcome/thanks. And you are right, most probably don't know who he is and you know what, before yesterday my kids didn't know who Bryson was either. But they sure do today and I can guarantee all their classmates heard the name Bryson today as well.
