True Temper Elevate - Iron Shafts

Diamana_Stinger

Recommended Posts

So it looks like there is a new iron shaft on tour, that supposed to help launch higher and land steeper with the new ultra low spin balls. I think they are lighter than a dg-x100 as well by around 9/10 grams, so that puts them at what right around 120grams?

hopefully we can get some more info on these asap...

I think there is "S" and "X" available on tour right now, but I dont think they are using the weighting like s300,s400,x100 etc. on these.

I found this press release, courtesy Jonathan Wall/PGA Tour;

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The introduction of solid-core construction golf balls has been a massive benefit for players on the PGA TOUR — particularly when it comes to the driver where low spin qualities equate to more distance off the tee.

But decreasing spin with the driver can sometimes come at a cost, especially in the iron department for those players who don't fall in the high swing speed category.

"We've seen a lot of guys, as they are going to low-spin golf balls to reduce the spin with the driver, they are struggling with the launch on their irons," said Don Brown, Project X's director of innovation. "We noticed there was a small hole in our lineup where we could help a player get the ball in the air."

The solution is True Temper's Elevate shaft. The new part comes in at 121 grams, roughly nine grams lighter than the popular Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 part.

Going lighter can help boost swing speed, however, True Temper wanted to fix launch at the same time. Engineers were able to add an additional two degrees of launch via a thinner .370-inch diameter section just below the last step — Dynamic Gold is .395 inches — that activates the tip section.

"During testing, the TOUR guys with the lower clubhead speeds are seeing the benefits of what this shaft can do," said True Temper Tour rep Paul Loegering. "Getting the apex and landing angle optimized are critical to ensuring the ball isn't spinning too much but is still stopping on the green."

Loegering mentioned that while players are going to get more height with Elevate, it's designed to not balloon on shots that need to be flighted through the wind.

"If a player is challenged getting that height, he's going to get more elevation but not too much spin," Loegering said. "It keeps things in a good sweet spot so you can still flight the ball if necessary and not have to worry about it spinning out of control."

Another new addition is a Vibration Suppression System (VSS) housed inside the shaft that helps reduce unwanted vibrations at impact. Similar to the company's Sensicore insert, it's roughly 75 percent lighter than its predecessor.

"The VSS is a benefit for the pro and the amateur," Brown said. "It was built for Elevate but can be applied to other products we're working on at the moment."

True Temper Tour reps confirmed a 95-gram part is also in the works. For now, the shaft is available at 121 grams in two flexes (S and X) on TOUR.

From the above, it sounds like this shaft is going to fit a very small niche of tour pros but would be very beneficial to many amateurs who are better golfers without high clubhead speed.

I reckon its better to play weak lofted irons with shafts that are stiffer than normal

When the shaft kicks through impact you better have to kick straight and not exenuate any swing flaws.

I lose balls to the left with weak or tip weak shafts

Just my thoughts over the last weeks or so?

Sounds interesting. I wonder how different it would be from DG 120 x100 though. I guess this is a slightly different profile with a softer tip.

DG120 and DG105 are supposed to be the same profile as the full weight DG. They do play a hair softer though, which is interesting, because the DGSL played stiffer than a standard DG. At any rate, I'd assume this is kind of a re-branding of the DG Pro, which was aimed to get the ball a bit higher with a touch more spin. It didn't stay around for very long for whatever reason, but it felt fantastic. IMO it was miles better feeling and performing than the DG120 and DG AMT, but obviously TT thought differently. I only saw it for about a year or so before it almost completely vanished.

I think the VPC, VP and J15CBs all were stock with those DG Pros...I greatly preferred the Modus 3 125.

It was stock in the Nike VPC, the Wilson V4, and the Bridgestone J15. As for no-charge stock, it was pretty much only available in Callaway as Srixon and Mizuno completely ignored it. It's a shame, it was a solid shaft. I haven't hit the 125, but I've tried the Super Peening Blue (which is supposedly the 125 profile) and it felt super boardy and heavy to me. I remember the Black Golds, same thing as the SPB, very stout and harsh (at least to me!)

Hit this against a nippon modus 120 X today....both clubs were built to identical specs. Only real difference was the feel/ feedback for me. Performance was very similar The feedback felt like a KBS Tour. Which to me gives a softer feed back compared to dynamic gold..... Which I prefer......But some else may feel something different.

Wouldn't the same player that these are aimed at really benefit more from a set of graphite shafts? To me it just sounds like a steel shaft to try and meet the properties of graphite for those that have an issue going that route.

Not necessarily. Your heavy-weight graphites like Recoil 110 & 125, Aerotech 110 & 125, Fuji Pro 115, and Aldila RIP 115 are all low/low in design, for the player with an aggressive transition but wants to shave some weight. These sound like they are for your better player who needs something like a Modus 105 or XP105 in terms of launch characteristics, but overpowers them a bit due to how light they are. I mean we already have the Nippon 130, but it's so butt stiff it's insane...fits very few people really well. There's also the XP115, but it's a bit soft feeling for your "tour" speeds that these seem to be going after.

In all honesty, it sounds like they are targeting the average KBS player with this...a little smoother, a touch higher launch and spin. They have to been losing a bit of money to KBS that they want to re-establish.

These are part of the PFC program, so they might not come to retail in any OEM any time soon. I have them in R,S,and X demo's. They launch similar to the XP115's. Definitely feel stiffer in the handle. Not sure about the VSS tech making a difference for my feel. Not really sure what to compare them to. Maybe a heavier PXi???

Interesting review by TXG which shows not a lot of difference for the tester between the Modus 120 x and the Elevate x. Test before you buy is the takeaway for me.

Yeah if I remember correctly both Modus and Elevate launched the same but Modus 120 actually spun more than the Elevate (like mentioned above, for the guy in the review).

Never sell to this crowd.

Nearly Everyone on this site seems to think they hit the ball too high and spin too much.

Very few people that I play with seem to understand what the height of a well struck iron should look like.

Most stronger more accomplished players should hit their irons with at least a 100 foot Apex. That’s up there.
