New Mysterious PING Iron that looks like iBlade/G700 Combo

Recommended Posts

I just spoke to a local pro who has hit them. He said the thing is ridiculous. I don't have any info on specs but according to him, the Ping rep told him they are directly attacking AP3 and P790 with this guy. So, those offended by "loft-jacking", this might not be the iron for you. However, as the guy above me stated, G700 and and i500 combination might be the filthiest combo you could create in terms of performance across the bag while still maintaining a clean look that blends well.

I'm all for it!

No doubt about it.

But I think an iblade II and i500 combo would be the most delicious.

Looking forward to when Ping publishes all of the specs for the new iron sets. I've never blend/combo a set of irons before but a G700/i500 seems like a natural to me. Approaching mid sixties now so I'm looking for a little more help and some additional distance for sure.

Filled with air. Rep. had a cross sectioned 7 iron. (other hollow body irons like P790 and PXG all leave filler for cross sectioned irons). Nobody specifically asked if there was filling assuming it was near production piece. Swing-weight controlled by screw in toe, like those horrible G700s. Didn't appear to have a huge slab of tungsten in the sole like the Ansers did. The only hope for these irons is forged face will improve sound and feel compared to G700. Rep. did say that awful wearing hydropearl finish is gone..

Great news about the hydropearl going away. So you're saying that all of the swingweighting will be done solely at the toe? That doesn't sound like either a good idea or a usual Ping solution but you've seen the club.....hard to argue with that. I assume they'll tell us all we need to know soon enough. Anyone wanting a D-5 or heavier is going to have a slice-machine on their hands with the addition of 10 grams of weight in the toe of a club....or will the screw extend into the cavity?

If I had to guess, lets say they had to add 4 grams to the head they would add 2 grams of hotmelt in the cavity by the heel then change the toe screw to a 2g heavier one. That would keep it from being so toe heavy.

my local rep said they have 24 different weighted screws plus they are using hosel weight to achieve proper swing weight. That is for the G700. So I guess the i500 will be the same.

Ping quoted me $13.75/club to swing weight my G700's. I'm just going to try some lead tape and see how that goes as I just want to go from stock D0 to D2

Just an update on these. My boss hit them a few days ago. According to him, it's going to be a bit pricier than i210 but is still the same, if not a bit cheaper than P790/AP3 price wise. He said it looks similar to a P790, if not a touch smaller/less offset. He said it feels better than a P790 too. He compared it directly to the i210 and found it went 1.5 clubs longer, exactly as what Ping told him. It is available in THREE different loft specs: retro, standard, and power spec. Standard is apparently close to P790 (22* 4i, 45* PW), Power Spec is a degree or two stronger than that, Retro spec is something more similar to iBlade lofts.

He says Ping is going to have one heck of a time selling i210 as he doesn't think it's too much of a departure from i200 (which isn't a bad thing in of itself). But if you can get a forged cup face, with retro lofts, for a similar price, in a more modern, techy iron, it might be hard to sell a more basic iron (unless that is what you're after). We get out heads July 31st...I'd assume that's standard for everyone else. He told me just to put my PUD in now because I'm going to love them hahaha.

Enjoy.

Great information throughout the thread. I completely agree that the people grumbling about the G700's are the lower handicaps that aren't the target market for Ping for these clubs.

1.5 longer than what?

For example, if you have an i200 8 iron, an i500 is going to go “6.5 iron i200” distance?

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

Basically, yes. It's about 12-15 yards longer per club. Partially due to the lofts being stronger and partially due to the unsupported cup face producing ridiculous ball speed. If it's anything like G700, expect to see some incredible ball speed and distance gains even at comparable lofts. I've seen G700 7i get an easy 10-12 yards over other 6 irons, even with the 1/2 shorter shaft. These things are HOT and if Ping managed to get all that awesome in a smaller package, consider my combo set on order!!

Which probably explains why Ping has stopped doing special orders on the i200.

iBlade2.0 did hit their trademark list in August I believe. So I assume a replacement is imminent.
