Cobra F8 vs F8+ Fairway. 5 Wood.

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'm thinking of getting one of the Cobra F8 Fairways. I love smaller Heads, so the F8+ seems the way to go. But I don't know if the forward weight will make it a lot harder to hit.

I demoed the Callaway Rogue and Rogue Sub Zero in 18/19 degrees and can't hit the Sub Zero Model. The normal Rogue was an absolute Bomber, but launching way to high. So I search for something adjustable, instead of changing shafts in the Rogue 5 Wood until I find one.

I'm only interested in the 5 Wood.

Who has hit both Cobra Models and what Shafts are you using?

Thanks Guys

... The F8 5 wood has finally settled a revolving spot in my bag. I absolutely love this fairway wood. To me it has the perfect head size and face depth, not too big and not too small. Sound and eel is very, very solid. And the rails are amazing for any kind of lie. All that means little if it does not provide the performance and it certainly does that with a mid/high trajectory and low/mid spin. I have the Even Flow Blue 75gm shaft in mine.

I had the F7 fairway, was ok, nothing impressive. Found the Rogue way hotter. But it launches to high.

Love my F8 Fairways! Started with evenflow blue but switched to Ad-Dj which launched higher and spun less for me. Never tried the F8+ sorry.

Clubs should launch fairly similarly... I have a rogue 3w and f8 3w. It's very much down to how you are striking them. Overall I find the Rogue in 15* actually launches a hair lower then the F8 in 14.5*, but that's just from 10 or 15 hits off a tee during rounds. I have to do more closed data testing to see for sure what flight is like. I think the Aldila 2kXV shaft kicks a little more than the Evenflow Blue does, so it could be adding a little bit of dynamic loft at impact.

The F8+ with weight forward should definitely launch lower though. Also consider the hybrid in ~18-19* if you need lower launch, too.

If you like the smaller head shape. Get an F6 Baffler, put the weight in the back and save a few bucks. $150 on Cobra’s website.

I struggled with the Baffler but have had better luck with the F7 5-6w on the Baffler shaft. That said, the F8 4h was a big upgrade in both distance and dispersion over the F7 4-5h at the same loft, so I'm considering the F8 fairway to replace the F7 as well and maybe going back to stock 5w length (and maybe even dropping the F7 3-4w I use tee-only in the process). Thoughts?

Only downside to F8 hybrid is they are no longer adjustable. My #1 complaint about my 3h is it's a glued hosel. Either the lie is too upright or the face is a bit closed because I cannot fade/cut that puppy to save my life. This day and age you aren't losing anything from an adjustable neck... so I don't see why some of the OEMs aren't doing it (Ping fairway, Rogue fairway, Cobra hybrids, M4 fairway, etc). I'd gladly pay the extra $25 or whatever it is to be able to dial my club in.

I may just be lucky that the F8 4h fits me as-is, but it was a pretty noticeable improvement over the F7 in any configuration, and also took the constant tweaking and second guessing out of play. The F8 was an improvement to the point that it's compressed the gap between it and the F7 5-6w @17* on Baffler shaft which is mostly what's making me consider the F8 5-6w @ 17*.

I never hit the F7 woods but I notice F8 is bit longer than my old XR16 and also my 915F. It also tends to be an over draw-er for me but luckily I can adjust the loft/face.

I'd definitely give Rogue a try though. My 15* Rogue is regularly going as far as my driver. Granted, not the best driver of the golf ball.... but the thing is a rocket machine. Only down side is non adjustable and it's not quite "soft" feeling like the F8 is... the F8 makes such a lovely sound at impact. I'd be buying a 13.5* SZ right now if it were adjustable and use that as a mini driver. 55* lie though which isn't ideal..

I also found the Rogue very hot and long. But the Problem is you can't adjust them. And with the stock Synergy Shaft it launches way to high. And if Wind comes into play I would be lost. So I could wait for the next Callaway Release which will be adjustable again (I think so), or I get the F8+ 5 Wood.

Only Question is which Shaft to put in them.

I play a Titleist 818 H1 23 degree Hybrid with the Tensei Pro White 90 stiff. That think is fabulous and I brought another one in 19 degrees with the same Shaft from Ebay. Don't have it yet.

However, I think the Tensei Pro White will launch a little to low in the 19 degree Head and the Synergy launched Way too high in the Rogue 5 Wood.

What Shaft would you recommend? I always have good Success with the Whiteboard Profile in the past. My Irons and Wedges are Nippon Modus 130 X Flex. Driver is Oban Devotion stiff.

Forgive the slightly off topic reply. This is about the F8 3 wood...I also have the F8+ driver. Yesterday was the maiden round for the 3. Oh MY! It's straight and long. I hit three tee shots, all were 230-240 right down the middle. That's a good DRIVE for me lol. I dropped one on a par 5 just to bang it off the deck and smashed one 225. Where this may be relevant to OP F8 vs F8+ fairway, I hit both at Golf Galaxy. The F8 fairway is plenty small enough if you prefer a smaller fairway head, as I do. The F8+ was IMO too small, it's probably a better "hybrid"-like fw. But I clearly made the right choice for me. Drivers, for me F8+ is the right look and shape compared to the F8. These are great clubs. My previous 3w, of which I own two, is the original Nike Ignite circa 2000. Nothing really ever threatened the Ignite until the F8 (I do have a King LTD 3 as well, lol).

If the F8 Fairway is the same Size as the F7 Fairway, it is definitely too big for my liking. Are they the same Size?

The Evenflow 75X Blue should work well I think. I don't find it loose or whippy at all, gives a nice smooth feel through the ball. Honestly... I can't tell much difference between it and the evenflow black. Maybe the black spins a hair less? Not much in it. They even make an Evenflow Blue 85X, but they are much harder/rarer and thus will cost you a bunch more aftermarket.

Also, regarding the size... F8 is every so... and i mean ever so, slightly larger than F7 in the 5w. F8+ is significantly smaller looking than F8 in 3w, but not massively smaller in 5w.

I can't speak to the F8 5/6, but I recently picked up an F8+ 5/6 and it's one of the most impressive fairways I've ever hit. It does have a small head, but I bought it intentionally for nasty lies and digging out of the rough. Can't say enough about it. And can't wait to play it this summer. I love the stock Aldila Green 2KxV (terrible name)

Just picked up a F8 5 wood with the stock Aldila 2k.. blue shaft. Have it set to 17 degrees. Have no problems getting ball flight but having a problem with pulls and hooks. Did not have this issue with my Cally vseries fwy. wood. I noted the standard Cobra grip is very small - like pencil small. Wondering if a new grip might solve the pulls/hooks. Also, is the Cobra Aldila 2k... blue shaft weak to flex? I use regular flex in all my clubs.

I am somewhat of a Cobra fanboy as I use the Flyz driver and biocell hybrids.

Check the lie angle of your previous woods and see if you need to adjust the Cobra. I tried mine in upright and couldn't hit it too save my life but back in neutral it's awesome. I've become a huge fan of the F8 line. The 22* hybrid is lights out...

I did not know you could adjust the lie angle of the f8. As I stated previously, I have the loft at 17 degrees which is the lowest it can be. I thought the lowest loft results in the flattest lie. I might be confused.
