"Paul Levy has accepted responsibility for his terrible lapse in judgment last Thursday. He has expressed deep regret and fully understands how irresponsible his actions were. The PGA of America will support Paul as he seeks counseling, faces the consequences of his actions and works through the legal process in the months ahead.”

Counseling? He'll be back at the bar in a couple of months. Sometimes it just isn't necessary to issue a statement.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

Zero tolerence and a resignation would send the right message. Fortunately nobody was hurt, but if you are so drunk, you miss the road, you are drunk enough to kill someone.

DUI isn’t usually a fireable offense in a white collar job unless it happens while on the job. He appears to have been on personal time here.

Agree on the missing the road notion.

I think some jobs have clauses that would allow them to fire you for a criminal offense. No idea about the PGA. I have seen people fired for DUI though

I guess golf doesn't teach high character after all.

The culture around golf inherently encourages/enables DUIs imo. As an estimate 15-20% of people will have 2 pints or more after a round and drive here.

Maybe 2 or 3 pints will put someone over, depending on timing and strength of brew etc, but your not going to be driving off the road.

I agree with you about the 19th hole culture.

Regardless, I don't think he should be fired.

Definitely could be a "conduct unbecoming" type clause in there - especially at his level. Not sure what the guys salary is but it always peeves me off in cases like this that he cant take a damn Uber home. So drunk you cant stay on the road, could have easily killed someone/s.

And I guess it still always baffles me in cases like this that being so drunk you drive off the road and crash into a sign is only a misdemeanor.

In order to keep his job he will need to admit he's an alcoholic. This way the PGA can state it was "the addiction" that led to poor judgement.

Drinking and driving from golf courses is borderline epidemic.

I refuse to jog on roads near my golf course , as it's an area with 2-3 courses nearby. I used to do it after rounds. A couple of years ago a jogger got killed. There have been other injuries. This is only over a 4-5 year period.

Many have made the same mistake..........many more have been fortunate to never have been caught.

Hope he learns from his mistake and changes his ways!

Very true. I drove that same stretch of road hammered hundreds of times when I lived out there and never drove into a sign or got caught.

That was before I realized I had a problem and quit. I honestly don’t think I ever played a round of golf back in those days and didn’t get drunk afterwards.

There were no Ubers or Lyfts back then and very few took cabs. The Dark ages.

This is a good point - if he’s an addict he’s going to be in a protected class.

Or if you are on your way home from “LA” while you sit motionless in the road with a damaged vehicle in Florida. Maybe he can get the sweetheart deal El Tigre got. Something like DUI diversion program. One might conclude the Tiger was in motion before he decided the road was a parking lot. Funny not much ever came out on the vehicle damage.. Zero tolerance...not for the golden child.. in the U.S. you can continue to drive impaired until you kill someone. Unlike Europe, still never forget Ian Woosnam driving drunk into someones cornfield. Lost his license, not sure he ever got it back.

According to several here the police were actually at fault for that. They should have taken him home, stopped for White Castle and tucked him safely into Amanda Dufner’s bed.

0.0 BAC

True but completely irrelevant. Ripped on sleeping pills, prescription pain pills and THC is still driving while impaired. He was almost certainly more dangerous than if he just had a few drinks.

As is the topic of TW in this thread.

Levy is a manager and leader, and apparently really stupid.

Not a paid position. President, Vice President and Secretary are elected every two years and their travel expenses are covered when they are representing the PGA of America (has nothing to do with the PGA Tour).
