Yellow Balls have a different feel?

Sorry all you pervs, just needed a catchy title!

I'm really liking the Titleist AVX balls, but have only played the White. I bought a dozen recently and traded one sleeve of White for a sleeve of "Yellow". I haven't actually "hit" the Yellow yet, but the cover just seems different than the Whites - more of a hard plastic than a thin urethane feeling. I've noticed this on other Yellow balls in the past as well.

So question is, do they use a different mix on the yellow covers, does the yellow dye so something to make the cover harder, or is this all in my mind?

Ask Dean Snell. He's the resident expert on Golf balls.

Email or Instagram him. I'm sure he'd tell you.

Good point, and thanks for the advice!

Ask him to post here or post what he tells you. I’m curious as well. I only play yellow occasionally so I can’t say I’d noticed anything.

Pretty sure in the Snell thread Dean commented that there should not be any difference (feel or otherwise) between the yellow and white versions of the MTB Red. If it wasn't in that thread on GolfWRX it was on a FAQ on his company web page or on that other forum which should not be named.

It's the power of optics on our definition of "feel".

I got a couple of Vokey wedges that came with those white paint-fill Tour Velvet grips. I can't even describe how much softer and cushier those felt than the usual hard and uncomfortable Tour Velvets. Yet there is in fact no difference in texture or firmness, just the power of optics. Darndest thing.

From what I understand their are 2 types of urethane. The overwhelming one is cast and the other is TPU or thermoplastic urethane. The TPU from my experience is shinier and is used for yellow balls typically as it takes the coloring better than cast. If you look at the MTB Red the cover is clearly shinier than the Black even in the white versions of both. So a yellow ball may be a TPU cover which for you may feel different.

Cast is not necessarily more commonly used than TPU. Only to the extent all Titleist Urethane balls are cast makes it seem the most widely used. The majority of non-Titleist Urethane balls are not cast thermoset.

I've been playing the Snell Reds this year. I just received my two dozen yellow ones. Hopefully I'll get out today and put one in play.

I'll report back if they feel any different to me.

Lame, quoting my own post. I know.

But, I thought the yellow Snell Red felt softer than the white. It actually felt closer to the black to me. I loved it Red performance with a softer feel.

Some are and some are not. I know TaylorMade and Snell do cast balls. Snell does both types now with the Red version.

Just rewatched Snells video on common ball questions.

Cast urethane yellow balls use a different paint color and different pigment in the actual urethane. It doesn’t sound like it should do anything to feel but he doesn’t address that specifically.

Good video if you haven’t seen it. I love the question about low compression golf balls. He says unequivocally that no one hits a low compression ball farther than a high compression ball no matter what your swing speed is. If you enjoy the feel of a low compression ball that’s great, but it doesn’t go farther for slow swing speed players.

Here’s the link if you have time.
