Callaway X Forged Custom Order lengths all over the place! (RESOLVED)

I remember the first set of clubs I ever custom ordered. Titleist DCI Oversized.

Lined 'em up against the wall and it was obvious that one club (I think it was the 8-iron but it was a long time ago) was closer in length to the 7-iron than to the 9-iron. Also the 4-iron was like 2 SW points lighter than the rest of the set (or maybe it was heavier, again it's been 20 years).

Played those clubs every round for 6-8 years and never noticed anything wrong with the 4-iron or 8-iron. Somebody got a bit sloppy cutting one of the shafts and I guess there was a wrong-weight clubhead mixed in with the rest.

I don't think *any* mass market golf club is going to be closer than 1/8" maximium length error, one degree maximum loft or lie error or a couple points maximum SW error on a consistent basis. If you measure closely enough there are fractions here and fractions there off in virtually any set of eight clubs.

I hear you. The forums are full of stories about bad builds from PXG, Mizuno, etc. Clubs are so expensive now it's not asking much for a little more care. That's why Club Champion get away with charging big $$s

I just wanted to chime in on this thread as I think the consumer is slowly becoming conditioned that these things are OK and we have to pay CC double to build a set to the actual specs we ordered. I see it all about tolerances - most OEM's state +/- 0.25* on loft which is not a deal-breaker, I just personally think that cutting shafts sequentially so they are pretty much spot on as 0.5" different to the next club in the series shouldn't be too challenging, a 0.25" margin on a 0.5" gapping is 50% out or like being almost 2 degrees out on loft

They don't measure the gaps. They measure the clubs. What you're calling a 0.25" margin is an error of 0.125" on one club.

Just like when I leaned those DCI's up against the wall. The one that was off stuck out like a sore thumb when seeing the progression across the eight clubs but it was actually only a tiny fraction of an inch error. And it's just not physically possible for 1/8" longer or shorter club to affect your swing.

Stock set orders i get having a bit more tolerance for error. If a set is custom built, it should be damn near spot on as part of the custom build should be checking to the custom specs ordered.

... Some of you are looking at this process backwards. It is not how can a Golf Equipment Co serve the customer but how can the customer serve the CEO, the board and the stockholders. That is the reason the clubs may have some components built in China or Mexico and assembled someplace else, although Mexico and China seem to be the most popular place to assemble the clubs too. They hire minimum wage employees that really don't care about golf club construction or probably don't even know what golf really is. Sales goes thru scenarios of how few customers will we pi$$ off and have to re-build clubs by being off spec and how much will that cost compared to how much money will we lose hiring qualified employees and taking the time to get it right.

Wow, so we have brought this thread back to life. I am still very happy with the feel of these Iron’s and would recommend them to anyone looking for a forged cavity back to give them a try. As far as the new set, they came in with correct lengths on all of the irons. North Butte, I’m not sure if you’re a club builder, fitter, rep, or pro, but expecting accurate lengths for a set of $1200 irons is not expecting blueprinting. I requested 3 things: 1. Plus 1/2” 2. Two Degrees upright and 3. D5 swingweight. The only thing that was mentioned in my original post was the fact that the lengths were all over the place. I can and did bend my irons to my requested specs as soon as I was able to.get to a bending machine. As far a swingwieight goes, my assumption was correct in that adding the extra length would get the swingweight close to where I need it. In the future, I will find the time to build my own sets. I’m not a great golfer (5 hcp), but I play better with clubs that fit me, and play better when I’m confident that they are right.
