Should I trade in or keep?

Long time reader, first time poster here. I'm looking for some advice; I recently had my bag stolen (Nike VRs) and was lucky enough that my brother won a set of Mizuno MP-15 irons in a raffle at a charity event. I had been playing to an unofficial 17-19 (trending down this season), but since taking over the Mizunos, I've struggled to even get close to playing at that level, and have started a lack of confidence in every shot. My iron play was always one of my stronger points; off the tee/around green is where I lost a lot of my strokes. I've played 3 rounds so far and have had about 5 driving range sessions (80 balls or so each).

A shop near me currently has a special where they will offer a bonus of 50% to the PGA value of all clubs. My question is, would it make sense to go trade these Mizunos in and get fitted for something or should I just keep the MP15 and just put in more practice? I've read that blades do take time to get use to and require more practice/reps? Budget is a concern; I already had to buy the other missing pieces for my bag. I was quoted at $315 with the bonus mark up for trade in. Thank you for any advice

I would say to bring the mp 15’s to a fitter and see if the specs are right for you. The heads are awesome and if you can dial them in they are incredibly accurate.

Mizuno   STZ 230 9.5*   Tensei Raw White 65x

Taylormade   Tour Issue Stealth  3 HL Hzrdus RDX Blue 70 6.5

Taylormade   Stealth+ 5w   Diamana OG Kai’Li 70x

Wilson   Staff CB 7-P / D9 Forged 5-6  Modus 120x

I played the MP15s for a few months and loved them on well struck shots when I was playing well. Off days sucked. I bought them for $350 new on Ebay, and sold them for around that here on BST. I play off a 15-16 and could never shoot my HC with the Mizunos. Got fit for Ping i200s and only paid another $250 for custom fit clubs. Instantly started hitting greens again and playing to my HC. Almost made a hole in one on a short 110 yd par 3 the other day. If they aren't working and you play off that high of a HC, go get fit into something. Rogue, Ping, APEX CF16, lots of great options out there for some help. MP15s are smooth, but not at all a GI iron. I would say reserved for a true 10-13 ball striker HC max.

I would take your MP-15 7 iron somewhere that you can hit clubs, and compare it to other clubs. That is the best way for you to tell if you should go another direction IMO.

The MP-15 is more of a "players" club and while it may offer a touch of forgiveness, it does not offer as much help as a true GI iron on off center strikes, or with getting the ball air born.

First off, I am sorry to hear your irons got stolen. Secondly, I hope you bought your brother a drink. Sounds like a stand-up guy.

As for trading in your irons... I think your best alternatives are:

- Take them into a fitter and see how you hit them compared to other options; if other options are largely greater, make the switch. If there is only nominal improvement, I'd hang onto them, keep the cash, and focus on improving your game other ways.

- If the other (irons) options were largely greater, see what the MP-15's are running for on WRX BST or eBay, and if the PGA value is greater, trade them in.

Best of luck!

As someone earlier mentioned, I'd consider bringing the Mizzys to a fitter and doing a simple lie adjustment. Traditionally, Mizuno irons are one degree flatter than most other manufactures. I'm not sure what your lies were on the VRs, but it's plausible the lie of your Mizunos just doesn't feel right. Worst case scenario, you're still not playing well and sell them on the net or at a store for something else.

At a 17 handicap I think you could use a more forgiving iron. The Coverts you had are a more forgiving iron and the shafts may be completely different. The Covert was more of a game improvement iron and likely had a softer/lighter shaft than you have in the MP15.

If you are struggling I would recommend going to get fit then see how the specs compare to what you have. Life is too short to struggle with your irons.

Nike irons are nice but personally I would keep the Mizzys. Mizuno have been in the iron game for a long time so you know they put out quality irons. I would get fitted to them and put the range time in and get comfy with them to build up your confidence.

You won't get a fair trade price at a big name store and you might have to wait a while to find a buyer if you sell them privately.
