Is this the solution to slow play in golf? Giant chronos following groups.

According to this article, the euros are testing a giant clock/ timer on the course....each group is timed as they are playing. Is this a buy or sell idea?

Results were very positive, shaved 30+ minutes off the average 3 ball time from the previous year at the same course whilst not impacting scoring.

Fair bit of discussion about it on in the Shot Clock Masters thread:

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1648516-2018-shot-clock-masters/

The experiment can be declared success. The rounds took substantially less time than usual, the scores were better and a Finn won. What more can one want! On less quantifiable aspects, the rounds were also quite watchable - more so than without the clock - and the clock did introduce an extra element of excitment.

Don't say this is the solution to all the life's problems but it did produce encouraging results. I hope we will see more of this or variants thereof in the future.

Sell. How fast or slow professional golfers play doesn't affect slow play by amateurs. People are just clueless. I wish my club would publicly post round times for members. Maybe grade us 1-10 so the slow people or groups at least can't deny their slowness. We publicly list members who are +60 days late paying dues. That drastically cut down on late payers.

The difference is that late payers aren't made late by other late payers.

Post round times for members, and are you going to post the 5 hr round for the speedy golfer who had to wait on the slow group in front of them?

Don't agree that slow tour play doesn't affect ams, you can see players emulate pros all the time. That's why pros have endorsement contracts, because what they do influences the general public. No reason to think their methods of play don't. You see guys twirling clubs after hitting because they saw it on TV, for example.

That said, the main cause of slow play isn't the player, it's the course setup/management with tee times which are too close, pins cut in bad spots, poor layout/design of the course. Sure, there is the occasional slow group that needs to be prodded along, but when you see a golf course 1/2 hour late on tee times and it 10am on Saturday, that's a management problem, not a player problem.

All the professional tours should just allow laser rangefinders. Most players with their caddies spend a good 30 seconds to 2 minutes getting yardages. For the pros, approximately 22 shots or more a round that you have to get yardages. I think it would shave off quite a bit of time.

Will disagree. Laser helps golf, but not pace of play. Players today are looking for yardages to where they have to land the ball. most hole locations are tucked in. So they look in their book where they have to hit the ball and not miss and so on.
