PING G400 driver adapter won't stay on!

In 2016, I played a Ping G driver for about 3 months, but I moved away from it because I couldn't get the adapter to stay on the club. In April of this year, I put a G400 Max in the bag, and although I really like the club, I've been plagued with the same damn adapter issues. Here's how it works:

 

The PING adapters have small rubber ferrules that sit above the adapter. After about 30 or 40 strikes, I start noticing some separation between the ferrule and adapter. Once the separation reaches about 1/8", the shaft starts to spin around in the adapter (but doesn't come all the way off) upon impact.

 

This "spinning" is significant for me because my miss is out on the toe, and this just exacerbates the problem. Once the shaft starts spinning in the adapter, I'm just a few toe strikes away from the thing coming off completely.

 

There are 4 clubmakers somewhat near me. The three within 20 minutes do a poor job with the PING adapters, and I will notice ferrule separation and/or spinning within 2 sessions.

 

The fourth clubmaker is 40 minutes away, but they use a slow-setting epoxy + abrasives to set the PING adapters in a more reliable way. I have gotten about 6 sessions out of this approach, but we're still talking about monthly shop visits to have my adapters re-set.

 

Unfortunately, even this careful approach isn't enough to keep this adapter problem from happening.

 

In 2016, I simply abandoned the PING lineup because I was sick of dealing with this problem. I feel like I am destined for the same outcome in 2018, but I figured I'd see if you guys had any suggestions or solutions before I punt.

First, I have to say that I have replaced the Ping adapters on at least 6 shafts, 2 for the G30 driver, 2 for G30 3 wood and 2 G30 5 wood (just bought a used 5 wood and installed the adapter last night). I have never had an issue with any of them. I have used quick set and slow set epoxies. Some times a tiny bit of shafting beads, and some not (just depended on how I felt about the fit.

 

But not a single issue. I have used at least 1 of the older G30 style (non rubber ferrule) and the rest were the new G style with ferrule. Again, no issues what so ever.

 

I clean the adapters with a drill mounted or hand held wire brush, flush with acetone. Rough up the shaft and clean and then apply the epoxy. No issue.

 

Are you talking the same shaft each time? Sounds like you need to check or change a couple of things,

1. Find some better fitters, or learn to do it yourself.

2. Make sure you rough-up and clean both the shaft and the adapter

3. Maybe get a new shaft or at least have the OEM look at the shaft to make sure its okay.

4. Are they using shafting beads? It could be they use to much. Before I learned, the first time I used beads, I used too much. The head of my G30 hybrid (no adapter) flew off. So lesson learned there.

 

Questions,

1. Can you share some pictures

2. What shaft is it? Original Ping or After market?

3. Where did the shaft come from? i.e. was it a pull and was it pulled properly

4. What is the diameter of the tip? I could be that after so much work or maybe initially it was sanded down too much and is now too small.

 

Just something to think about.

Well, I'm no 120mph swinger, but I can toe hit with the best of them!!!!!! LOL.

This is simply the fault of poor work done by your club builders. This would rarely, if ever, happen to a club that was built by someone who knows what they are doing. My guess is the wrong kind of epoxy was used along with poor shaft prep work. I would simply find someone who knows what they are doing.

LOL, This is basically impossible to have happen with any competent club builder. No amount of toe hits will cause this. Its not rocket science...

 

Abrade the shaft tip, light sanding to remove the paint

Abrade the inside of the adapter, sand paper rolled up or a tool

Clean both surfaces completely with acetone or rubbing alcohol

Properly mix 24 hour expoy until gel begins

Apply to both surfaces liberally, insert shaft while twisting to assure epoxy evenly distributes

Clean up excess

Rest shaft vertically and DONT TOUCH FOR 24 HOURS
