Wide Brimmed Hat??

Always wore a visor or baseball style hat

 

At doctors orders, looking for a wide brim hat to keep the sun off my ears

 

Do you have any suggestions??

I have found that they take a bit of getting used to, but, after the adjustment period you hardly notice the difference. And, the benefits greatly outnumber the initial inconvenience.

Also, have a number of them, and I much prefer ones with a stouter brim, and, drawstring that can be used on windy days.

The brim can act as a sail and send the hat on it’s merry way.

Have a Tilley I love, a little more stout and stays on in a pretty good breeze (no strings around my chin). If really hot and not too windy, the really wide brimmed Titleist type white hats are good. Still wear a ball cap style way too much, but wear the wide brims more and more, but most really windy days leave them home.

Have a Tilley I love, a little more stout and stays on in a pretty good breeze (no strings around my chin). If really hot and not too windy, the really wide brimmed Titleist type white hats are good. Still wear a ball cap style way too much, but wear the wide brims more and more, but most really windy days leave them home.

 

I usually bring both types. Throw the ball cap in the cart basket unless it's too windy for the wide brim.

After a recent scare, I've had a renewed interest in sun protection. My kids keep telling me that floppy hats are in fashion right now. They just look sloppy to me, but I've been forcing myself. I also have a solid brim straw greg norman type hat that I prefer to the floppy hat. But floppy hats and baseball hats are more transportable and flexible.

 

Either one just makes me look older. But, I keep reminding myself that its better than having cancerous lesions cut off . . . or worse.

Unique stiff front brim insert means they never flap or fold down in your face in a wind. Water repellant, light weight fabric, and a unique multi-use chin cord. And they have models with various brim widths. The thinner brims still cover your ears, but stay out of the way in a golf swing (or paddling, fishing, etc).

 

I have bought 2 (Osprey and Seahawk), and love them so much that I also brought them into my proshop to sell (may be the first golf course in the US with them), as well as may issue them to my staff. They've made me retire my Tilleys to the closet.

I would recommend the Ahead “Palmer” model.

The L/XL model fits my size 8 noggin, and provides plenty of protection.

Very comfortable and doesn’t interfere w game.

I grabbed a cotton twill Titleist bucket at the pro shop a few weeks ago.

Material that will block the sun and allow a soak in the cold water from the coolers.

Forecast is mid-nineties this weekend.

Are there any of these hats that use moisture wicking material, breathable, and have a brim you can put a ball mark on for less than $50?

 

I’m not wearing a $60 hat anytime soon.

 

The ahead Palmer is 100% cotton. That’d be unbearable at any temp over 60 degrees.

I have a couple of Kangol Trilby hats. One is black and the other is tanish. Just bought the tanish waxed-braid trilby and love it. Nice and light and cool. Very stylish as well. Found for under $60 on Amazon.

Imperial make some very good lightweight hats.

Kuhl makes a hat that looks a bit like a soft pith helmet. Noticeably cooler for me than a baseball style golf hat.

I have two Tilley T5 hats. The strap system is great. 99% of the time the strap sits up inside the crown. When the wind calls for it, the first step is to just slip the strap down on the back side of the head. That works in any wind I've played in. Beyond that, you can use the strap in the traditional position under the chin. I'd probably do that in a boat, I suppose.

 

They are expensive but very well made, and guaranteed for life.
