Try the puttout and get immediate feed back on line and distance. Also check dominant eye and get that over the ball. It can help to close the non dominant eye. I also find that the lie angle as used in practice makes a difference, consistently sending it L or R if off. I also find it helpful to move the putter straight back on the same line using shoulders not arms or wrists. Experimentation on the carpet gives immediate feedback showing when you have it right or wrong.

I forgot another major variable. I cut down the putter by about 3" on grip not so far in fact. This makes it 32-33 and seems to enable getting eyes over the ball. Some expert putter maker/fitter suggests most are too long. This makes a difference in seeing the line. A mirror helps in seeing where your eyes are but this can be translated into a distance eg approx 9" which you can measure. I suggest there are at least 4 factors involved which is why one needs practice in making straight putts on a flat surface. If you add in side slope, down up slope and green speed it is far harder to determine the issue. I respectfully suggest that making a straight putt is the first step, the rest can be conceived as still straight putts though curving.

Ive got most of the other parts of my game figured out except my putting. Could have had the best round of my life just the second time out this year if I could putt.

 

Here's the Deal:

 

When I Think I am aimed straight at hole, I am actually Aimed WAY left. I end up missing all putts right. I never Pull a putt always push.

 

This happens regardless of equipment. When I aim straight at hole, I feel like I have to bring the putter way outside / in or I will push it right even more.

 

I discovered when I get my hands higher and have the toe more down than up my aim improves a bit.

 

My putting stroke is ok and I used to be really a good putter but now I don't even know how to aim. I almost feel like my putter is like a draw swing - take it back inside and just push it right.

Looking for somebody to make sense of it and maybe explain why I am aimed so far left when I think I'm straight.

 

I tried some difference putters today and straight necks helped me line up straighter.

My problem was my feet alignment. Sometimes I get lazy and forget to set the feet correctly. My putting is now doing very well.

The line on the ball, aligned to your target, should fix direction. If you still miss right then your stroke is the problem. Change ball position, maybe a little more forward to help with releasing the putter head. Shorten your putter maybe, or play around with toe hang. Are you standing really far from the ball and reaching? Something is causing the pushes, is your putter grip installed a little open, making it hard to square the face at address? All of these and more should be looked at as possible issues.

 

You should never have such a big putting swing arc that "drawing" putts ever becomes a reality! I would start with playing the ball closer to your front foot and see where that gets you.

I'll play with a lot of folks who don't use the line on the ball to line up their putts and I think it's a huge mistake. I used to hit putts in every odd direction away from the hole but when I started using the line for every putt, I found myself hitting every putt on a reasonable line and not putting so hopelessly. I eliminated a lot of three putts and starting holing a lot more putts - I used to genuinely not make anything and now if it's pretty straight, even if it's like 15 feet, I have confidence that I can give it a good run and half-expect to make it.

 

I didn't really change anything in my technique: I'd line up the line on the ball in the direction I want it to go and really take the extra moment to make sure the line is pointing precisely where I want it to go because even a tiny difference can be quite a big miss. I'll take some practice strokes to feel the speed, line up square to the line on the ball, make 'speed' my last thought, then putt. I don't really think about the alignment in relation to how it appears visually to the cup since that feels like kind of an illusion in a sense - I just get square to the line on the golf ball and that's much easier to do.

 

A little forward press was another change I made that seems to help with hitting the ball square and not push/pull.
