I play my 915D4, Tensei Pro Orange at 44.5

What’s the headweight of your driver to get the swingweight back given the counter balance in the Pro Orange?

I just ordered a G400 Max at 44.75" yesterday. I had a G25 at stock 45.75" length and hit it pretty well, but I could always use a bit more consistency. Hopefully PING can get me the D3 swingweight I requested with no issues. I'm really looking forward to the G400 Max. My G25 was a superb driver, but unfortunately I cracked the head the other day. PING gave me a nice discount for my troubles.

they should be able to. They have different weights that go under the copper plate on the back of the head.

My golf buddy simply has lost all confidence in his driver. I have finally talked him into cutting it back. He wants to go to 44" but I feel 44 3/8 would be a better start. He hits his 3 wood a mile and shot a great round(for him,) and never used the driver.

So i have been using a 45.5 length epic with a projected X 6.0 shaft. Recently went for a fitting and the fitter said 45 5 was good and that was the standard length. I found the shaft online I was fitted into in 44.25, what pluses or minus do you think I will have if I go shorter then was fitted. Will I have to change swing weight? Any help is appreciated

A lot of 'short guys' are, and if you use a 44.5" shaft, you can be 'short' too, no matter now tall you are!.. :taunt:

44.5" Driver Shaft = off the Tee!

it's a good experiment, you'll want lead tape on hand, add one 3-4 inch strip at a time and then swing the club each time.

Ideally you want to have face impact stickers or foot spray so that you can see your impact pattern.

If you are going from 45.5 to 44.25, that will be a 1.25" change or a 8 SW change, which would be 16 g of weight.

You shouldn't have to add that much weight (just enough that you'll start to "feel" the head of the club in your swing).

Most lead tape is about 0.5-0.7 g/in, So if you add a 4 inch piece that will be 2-2.8 g per strip, which is likely a good way to go about it.

I just put the tape on the back edge of the driver (following the curve, trying to get the center of the tape lined up with center of face as marked.

Probably the best thing to do is go to the range and start hitting your 45.5, take note of your impact pattern with face stickers or foot spray on face.

Then change to the shorter shaft and apply one piece of lead tape at a time until you can just start to the feel the head in the swing.

Then repeat the check of your impact pattern.

That would be one way to do a head to head test between the two shafts (bonus if you have access to a launch monitor), but if there is a benefit to impact location and consistency with the shorter shaft, that is the main benefit.

You could then go to Howard Jones DIY driver tune up thread.

everyone is talking playing length, which is the first thing you described, end of grip to intersection of shaft projection to ground.

definitely not cut shaft length which would be 1.5-1.75 inches less than playing length.

I have been using stock length TM R15 and now M4 which is 45.75. After realizing that I started choking up about an inch and my driving accuracy improved drastically, and that was without changing the head weight. I've now found the shaft I was fitted for and built it to 45" total and usually choke up 1/4" - 1/2" on all clubs anyway and will had a 10g weight to the head, so adding ~6-7g. Will play in my hands just about 44.5, I'll never play those stock lengths again.

My friend had me cut 1 1/4" off his shaft, yes he will be just fine, told his wife not to worry. He was able to hit every fairway with it, and just as long as before(see honey.) He has officially drank the kool aide and is in the short shafted club group(and the short grass,) and likes it.

Im not sure of the heads exact weight; I simply replaced the standard 9 gram weight with a 14 gram weight and the club feels great to me!

Small update on my driver woes. I was playing my xhot pro at 43.75 with ok results. I have a backup Adams F11 with stock shaft that I took and chopped down to 44.75" with two 2" strips of lead tape. I had my best driving day of the year with the backup on Saturday. Now i will put another shaft in the xhot pro at the longer length to do a side by side.

Did you add any weight back to the head?

Playing the GMax at 44.5 with ping tour 65. Most consistently long setup I have ever played. Played 44" for a bit this year, but found my strike pattern was the same with 44.5.

Yes I put a 13 gram weight in it. Probably need a 16 and a small amount of hot melt to get the swing weight to d2.

Let me tell you what Wooderson is packin'

I’ve been going between a 45.5” AD-TP and 44.5” AD-DI recently. Definitely felt as though I lost 10 yards or so with the shorter shaft in the driver - but didn’t really test enough to be certain. Also different shafts (though not a ton different).

I am having issues after shortening my Fusion and will have to bring it back 1/2" to get it back to the sweetspot. Right now I am all over the toe and it is killing me. I was hitting it great today, but had to focus on setting it closer to the ball. But man was it ever long at times.
