2018 Taylormade project (a)

Thanks for giving the Project (a) a try and hopefully this helps:

 

Project (a) 2014-2015 (white only, sidestamp: Project (a), (a) in red): 85 compression ball (60comp core) designed for high spin for am’s into and around the green, also had higher iron/driver spin.

 

Project (a) 2016-2017 (white and yellow, sidestamp: Project (a), (a) in black): 70 compression ball (40comp core) designed to maintain greenside spin but with softer feel and slightly less iron/driver spin.

 

Project (a) 2018-2019 (white and yellow, sidestamp: <(a)> in red): 70 compression ball (35comp core), new material between core/cover, new cover and dimple pattern. Designed to maintain greenside spin and soft feel but significantly reduce driver/iron spin as well as improved aerodynamics for more distance and better performance in windy conditions.

 

Project (a) 2020? would love to hear your feedback on the 2018 version so we can incorporate into our development cycles.

As a project (a) fan who used every version, this is very welcome to see Tmag listening to users directly.

 

To me, 2016 version is very good but feels bit EMPTY when hit. 2018ver, so far has been better in terms of that. but I only played 2 rounds with it. Will report back.

 

For 2020 version, I don't agree that you need to keep the launch lower. This is geared for amateurs and they need the launch.

I have been wanting to try the project a. I had been a Prov1 user for a long time until I bought the TM LETHAL......to me the best ball I ever played. I only have a few lethals left and am looking for its eventual replacement. I purchased a sleeve of TP5's to give them a shot and will try them tonight, but how does the project a compare to the lethal? can you compare the two?

 

Hopefully I can find a replacement for the lethal without spending $45/dozen. Bring back the lethal!

Try 2016 Tour Preferred . It's very similar to Lethal/Penta TP5

Is Project A yellow ball still cast urethane? I heard it's hard to die on cast urethane, any special steps or characteristic of the process you can share for us?

I will try those. I am shocked they are still $27/dozen but that's a good price for a ball you love, so fingers crossed!

I know my distances very well on the courses I play and this ball is as long or longer than any other ball I have hit. I have hit many drives this year with the 2018 version that would go in my top 10% of drives all time. Not saying every drive but when I catch it clean its every bit as long as other balls I have played over the years and my really good ones are way out there for my swing. My driver SS is 105 to 110.

I just finished 2 rounds with 2018 version and I'm very impressed. The empty feeling of 2016 is no longer there. Spins nicely and flies on driver shots. To me this ball is perfect.

 

Only if I can trade in my 12dozen 2016 version to current one.. ;)

Although, the 2016 ball is not bad or seemed perfect at the time, there's always a new generation or other ball out there. I never understood why so many WRX'ers buy so many balls at one time. I guess like the current Z star deal, it's tempting to stock up. But, you are hitting upon the point I am trying to make, why get stuck with balls you're not going to use or not happily use, knowing there's a better version out there.

older model but the 15 pack is 34.99. 2.30/per ball compared to 3.75 per ball for a TP5. cant imagine the difference being that great per ball

It does have a hint of green... looks good though.

Academy Sports had both the yellow a 16 for 25 and the yellow 18 for 35. Honestly, the color on the 18 a looks exactly the same as the prior gen. I just don't like the hint of green. I much prefer the yellow you'd find on any Callaway or Titleist Tour Soft yellow ball.

My sleeve I'm looking at right now says 2015 on the back, and it is all black 'project a'

 

My sleeve with 2018 on the back has a red 'project a' on the side of th balls

I have the same sleeve that TaylorMade sent as part of the 2nd gen promo in mid 2016. You will notice that one of the sides of the sleeve mentions a 40 compression number which was not included on the 2014 release packaging. Also the date likely points to the most current copywrite renewal year that TaylorMade had at the time that the packaging was printed.

Welcome, TM Golf Ball ENGR. It's nice to have an expert on the site. Would you agree the 16 A in yellow has a greenish tint to it? How does the 18 A in yellow differ? Tanner

 

Yes there is a greenish tint to the yellow. This tint tested out best in our player panels, especially in low light conditions. Color preference is highly subjective but we do our best to gather the preferences of current Project (a) users in our surveys and test panels.

Yes Project (a) yellow is still cast urethane, the same material and dimple pattern used on TP5 and TP5x. You heard correctly that it is difficult to make a colored cast urethane product. The cover is not actually died but actually has both pigmented and clear coatings. Changing the pigment in the coatings requires an entirely new paint system, which can create many challenges and requires extensive testing and analysis to ensure the pigmented coating achieves the same performance as the original.

I never understood why so many WRX'ers buy so many balls at one time.

 

I'll tell you why:) I bought a dozen of the Z-Star X's at $10 a dozen and I'm down to my last box.

 

Sure, they are way hard compared to today's balls, but they are long, straight and check on the green. Still my favorite Srixon generation because the covers were almost indestructible. Three rounds, no worries and they still look great. I play 'em until I loose 'em. The new "Spin Skin" Srixons are just pitiful in durability.

i found the '17 version to be very short. it was a good 20 yard behind anything else. I do have a higher swing speed those these are probably just too soft.

I played with the TP5 again last night and the more I play the TP5, the more I like it. I used a chromesoft for 5 holes and then a TP5 for 4 holes. The chromesoft is a long ball but on 100yard pitch shots, it doesn't hold as well as I would like. Granted, I am sure I am not spinning it enough, but the TP5 just seems to stick a little better, even on long iron shots into the green. I hit a 6 iron into a 185 yard hole and thought it would roll off. the ball check up nicely and only rolled out 4 feet. For me, that is not a lot.

 

if the Project a is anything close to a TP5, I think I would make that my go to ball.

The a is spinny. You can get prior gen a for 25, much cheaper than the TP5.
