I hate you Snowman....

I've been trying to play more this year, even if it means playing by myself and only playing nine. I've been trying to play once a week instead of once a month or once every six weeks. I am a high handicapper but used to shoot mid 80s when I played regularly. Now I usually shoot 100-105. I play the ball down, no mulligans, etc. I am also a notoriously slow starter, usually shoot better on the back nine no matter the course.

Well today I decide to get in a quick 9, number 1 at my home course is a tough par 4 that I usually double or triple. Today I bogey it. Next hole, bogey the next three holes are: bogey, par, par. To be only three over through five is really good for me. It wasn't just the score I was off the tee well and my second shots were productive too. I am extremely inconsistent so to have this run of holes was nice.

Then the sixth hole...hardest hole on the course. Dogleg left par four with a huge downslope towards a creek. Hit my tee shot to the 150 marker, had a steep downhill lie with the ball below my feet and a creek about 50yds in front of me. I thin it into the creek, drop, play up right of the green and then shank two wedges and wound up with an 8 on that hole. The dreaded Snowman.

I was playing some of the best golf I have played this year only to have the Snowman show up and ruin it. After that it went par, bogey, double (three putt- with the second putt stopping on the lip of the cup). Carded a 46 and really feel that I gave away three shots.

Even though the Snowman showed up, I had a great time and took away some good full swing feels- hoping to get back to my mid 80s form this year..? There's always next week.

Thank you for the laugh! Puts things into perspective for sure...lol.

Not that you asked for advice, but I'd get a tune-up lesson with a pro. You might be surprised how quickly you get back on track with one you trust.

Cheaper than a shaft upgrade.

You're correct. I had a lesson last month that helped me get to this point..lol. And yes, more lessons are needed, but I find that lessons help provide, thoughts, feels, etc. You have to take it from there and work it out on the course.

I witnessed a 17 a few years back. 8 is a first world problem.

I played a 17 on a par 4 last year. It was for my second handicap card.

* Drive faded a bit and got dropped by trees, ended up a dozen yards short of a tall bush.

* Muggins here thought he could use a PW to get over the bush and onto the green.

* Muggins couldn't.

* Punch out of bush area. Ended up just short of a bunker.

* Miss-hit next shot and topped it into the bunker.

* Got ball straight out first time - yay! It landed in the second bunker in front. Oh.

* Six failed attempts to get out of second bunker. Resorted to turning round and sending ball 130 yards back down fairway (it sloped so the ball ran).

* PW onto green ended up in greenside rough (I blame my temper)

* Chip onto green.

* Three putt.

That hole is normal a guaranteed par for me. The whole experience taught me a valuable lesson about taking my punishment and trying not to be clever. One day I hope to learn that lesson :fool:

I got a valuable lesson in 2015 when it comes to the Snowman. Played at one of my favourite local courses (27 holes), and the first 9 starts with a relatively easy and short Par 4, dogleg right. Start out with an easy Par. Next hole is a Par 5 with an island green. Drive it into the fairway, no shot at getting on in two so layup my 2nd to right in front of the water. Chunk my next shot into the water. Drop 4, and hit 5 just off the green in the rough but into a small tree (tree saved it from rolling off into the water). Shot 6 I have to hit off my knees to even get to the ball and was able to get it onto the green and two putt for an 8. Disaster of a hole and could have been worse if I didn't hit it into that small tree.

Next hole is a Par 3 with an elevated green protected by 3 bunkers, playing 165. Drain it. First Hole in One (which is my picture). Went from an 8 to a 1 on back to back holes. Looks comical on the scorecard I kept by the way.

Golf is funny and it's always great to have a short memory playing any sport. Keep your head down and keep making those swings, and you never know what kind of shot you can pull off next.

This is exactly why I putt out of green-side bunker! Even when they say "you can't clear that lip" I still do it, I go short and go over sometimes but I always get out of the bunker on my first shot

Unfortunately this wasn't a green-side bunker. There's two of them on that hole. The first is about fifty yards from the green and fairly shallow. I could probably putt out of that, at least backwards. The second is about twenty yards from the green and fairly deep. I don't think I could putt out of that and might pay good money to see it done :)

For what it's worth almost immediately after the second bunker there's a steep slope down to the green. That hole is called 'The Bowl'. The sloping sides are what usually make it an easy par 4. But I'm usually pretty good out of bunkers. I might not always get onto the green but I'm usually 'well out' on the first attempt. This time though nerves and patience got the better of me. After getting into there through a series of silly mistakes I knew I was being watched by everyone else who just wanted to get on with the competition :(
