Scotty Cameron Newport Classic

Hi All,

 

I have picked up this Scotty Cameron Newport Classic on a local classifieds and was wondering your thoughts on it.

 

I only paid $120 AUD for it. I thought it would become a good project to work on.

 

What would you do to refinish or bring it back from all the surface rust?

 

I am from Australia so sending it to to get refinished in the US is cost prohibitive for me. Lajosi has quoted me ~$160 AUD + postage to refinish it and re paint.

Man that is rusty. To get rid of all that you would lose a ton of weight and still have pitting. I would get rid of that very heavy grip, oil it and play it as is.

So there is no way to rescue it without losing too much weight? How much weight would i loose by giving it a clean up? How much pitting do u think there would be after cleaning? Is it better off me moving it on?

It's still a quality putter. If it were me, I would find a good machine shop, remill the face but just take a small cut .002 or .003, get an old buffing wheel that you can trash and polish with remington oil, clean it, strip the old paint and re-do. I think you could have an oil can brown look.

 

To re-finish it's hard to say how much weight you would lose to get all the rust off, guessing 6 to 10 grams.

I'm in the oil it and game it camp- That is a pretty "Patina"

 

It is also very "even" which is hard to find on some of these older ones. I agree with the above, would consider maybe oiling it a little and try it out. See how it plays and goes from there. Could always refinish it later/add weight etc.

I was thinking of a coke bath and oiling it and go from there, but i was just wary of any pitting that may show up if i do this....

 

My mind is in 2 camps, oil it as is and play it, or coke bath it and see how she comes out and go from there....

Coke bath would perhaps take away from the even/constant rust. -And the pitting would definitely be more evident. Also if you have CLR on hand, it is a much easier clean up afterwards.

I prefer CLR. It is not any more harsh than the phosphoric acid that is in the coke. Plus I believe the results will happen sooner than the coke bath. Good luck and have fun with it.

I could be wrong, but that looks like a nice even coat of surface rust. I dont see any scaling which would usually indicate pitting.

I prefer CLR to coke, but as others have said you could easily play it as is with a little oil.

 

I found a similarly rusted newport for a great deal a few weeks back and decided to eventually have it refinished so I started myself with a CLR bath, I will post pictures when I have a chance!

I have heaps of different types of rust prevention spray available at home; Lanox, Inox, WD-40, rem oil, G96 and traditional silicone oil.

 

Which would be the best to use on this putter?

Also this putter is a 36". My preferred length is a 33". Should i shorten it and get rid of that grip at the same time? What grip should i go?

My other scotty is a studio style newport 2 that came with a super stroke mid slim 2.0 that is still on it. I dont mind those blue golf pride tour SNSR grips, what are your thoughts on them?

Grips are all personal preference. I use a SS pistol GTR 2.0 just it fits my hands and claw style well. I would say to cut it down and regrip. You may want to add some lead tape to the bottom, or put some weight in the shaft (sand/lead/etc) if it feels light.

I think the rust is so even, it looks quite nice. You’d really kick yourself if the CLR or coke bath took away from the consistency.

 

I think it comes down to your personal preference, if you are okay with the rust- play it. If every time you look at it you think about getting rid of that rust, then it needs a bath!

 

In terms of grips, just don’t go too big- you’ll lose all the feel!
