Lateral Movement - this is very important, Really?

Recommended Posts

Those red lines in the follow-through show where he has counterbalanced the momentum of his through swing with a tilt between his upper and lower body. So yes, there is net lateral movement of his pelvis after P7 but what about between P1 and P7?

Actually , no I was wrong because it looks like there is no net lateral move because he gets back in balance again at the end of his swing with his COG over the centre of his foot.

In the end , all this shows is that it is not an imperative to get weight on a lead leg to complete a pivot .

Huh? He literally moves his entire body forward. I literally posted a picture showing him shifting laterally to the right in the backswing. And then he moves forward from there to impact. It’s clear as day there is lateral movement in both backswing and the downswing.

I’ll post this again. Him shifting away from the target in the backswing.

Pure rotation to the top. I don't see much of any lateral movement other than what he needs to do to stay balanced. If you are pointing out there is 'some" lateral movement...yes there is...but for about an inch or two because the left knee bumps left on the transition...and then the left hip turns left and up.

He doesn’t have a left knee. And wildthing posted and has continued to post that he has ZERO lateral motion.

NOBODY who’s any good is “pure rotation” coming down

I didn't say pure rotation when coming down...the lower body shifts left...so there is momentary lateral movement...but not like doing "the bump" at a disco...that would not be good.

Observe the dynamic spine tilt.

And? What your point. Literally everyone tilts their spine. He still moves laterally, and does so both in the backswing and the downswing BEFORE impact. Wildthings premise is now he moves laterally but it’s well after impact.

My point is to point out an important motion of the spine that refute the notion of just one pure rotation.

Check out the yellow arrows. His hips have barely shifted left in relation to the open area in the trees that the arrows are pointing. Like I stated..an inch or two max.

I would rather focus on the motion of the lumbar spine (the axis of pelvis rotation), the thoracic spine (the axis of torso rotation). There is an apparent translation of the center of the pelvis.

Are you trying to over-complicate something simple? His hips may move laterally about an inch...but they are predominately rotating.

No, I am not trying to over-complicate things. The center of his pelvis moves at least six inches relative to the center of the torso. Why? What for?

Rotation...of course the center will move...but it's not moving laterally...you could take snaps from any decent swing and arrive at the same result...it's impossible otherwise...unless the player stops hip movement at impact...which many folks do.

Which rotation? Pelvis rotation? Torso rotation?

Hip rotation. If you believe his hips are sliding 12 inches left...I'm good.

So we agree that the pelvis is rotating while the center of the pelvis is also moving laterally, then I'm good too. :)

Who said anything about sliding 12”?

He is moving his upper and lower body off his axis of symmetry as a counterbalance while he pivots and swings. But Manuel De Los Santos proves that there is no need for lateral weight shift to a lead leg in his golf swing.

Imagine that: if we find a golfer without rear leg swinging a club, we could make an argument that there is no need for legs at all !!!

What a stupid argument, seriously makes me laugh out loud.

So for example , all these golf instructors (and there are many more) suggest shift-rotate moves

What I am saying is that no-one can explain the golf swing with 100% accuracy and suggesting that golfers do a specific action might not work for them. Say for example , you had weak supporting muscles in your lead leg , would it be more optimal trying to pivot like Manuel ?

PS. Here is Ed Tischler describing a number of ways to 'shift weight' , so there many ways to pivot and 'weight pressure' shift and all of them are probably okay if they fit your biomechanics.
