Course that typically sits in the bottom 1/4 of such lists, but I think is 'better' that many above it: Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Course that seems to tick boxes for old school public that people purport to like, that I don't see talked about: Landa Park at Comal Springs, TX

Paa Ko Ridge in NM is awesome and very few know about it.

Just here in CO, Red Sky Norman course, Cordillera Summit course, and honestly too many to list.

LA area: Wilshire CC, Rustic Canyon, LACC South, and one could argue even LACC North.

Bayonet in Seaside, CA

I'll add a new course that no one is talking about, Scissortail in Thackerville, OK which is part of the Winstar Casino and Resort.

I had an opportunity to play 9 holes at Paa Ko when there was literally no one else on the course, and I agree underrated, although Southwest golfers rave about it.

The Country Club of York, in York, PA is an absolute gem of a Donald Ross design from the 1920's. Never see it in the rankings, but it is a beautiful course on a fantastic piece of land. Hosted the USGA Jr. in 1998. Hunter Mahan defeated Camillo Villegas in the finals.

The Country Club of York's former Lead Superintendent is now our Head Superintendent. He runs a tight ship.....

Great question. I had a list of my five gems that I have played in the last year that are IMO underrated- I don’t necessarily mean they should be ranked, but they have yet to see the spot light.

Adena Golf and CC in Ocala, FL -> Built on a property that has not one but two quarries. Adena has some stunning holes and has a former Asst Super of Augusta National at the helm. In saying this, there is a plan in place to add some homes on part of the property, so my opinion may change with time.

Palmetto Golf Club, Aiken, SC -> Founded in 1891 Palmetto is one of the oldest country clubs in the USA. In the mid-1930s Palmetto went under a renovation by none other than Alister MacKenzie who changed the greens and added some immaculate bunkers which still exist today. Palmetto has the bunkering that Augusta once had- rugged MacKenzie bunkers.

Timuquana CC, Jacksonville, FL -> One of the few good things that came from a hurricane. Timuquana was sitting on the water as a once great Donald Ross Course when Mother Nature intervened. The hurricane left the course a mess, but brought on a restoration that brought back the flavor of this Donald Ross gem- including new bunkers and Pinehurst-like sandy waste areas.

Westhampton CC, Westhampton Beach, NY -> Seth Raynor’s first solo design and therefore Seth Raynor’s first solo Alps (Punch Bowl), Double Plateau, Redan and Biarritz. The course underwent a tree removal program and a restoration but Gil Hanse and his team in 2014. While the course is a bit limited as it is primarily built on flat land, the bunkering is exquisite and completely unique.

Sleepy Hollow -> Yes it is ranked, but it is completely underrated even for its ranking- C.B. MacDonald Design with an assist from Tillinghast and then a restoration by Gil Hanse- this course is a complete knockout. About 5 holes in I started to ask myself if I liked it as much as Pine Valley. The answer was no - but it’s one of the few times I have asked that question.

Canton Brookside

Floosmoor

Greywalls

Orchard Lake

Palatka

Mid Pines

Flossmoor CC- talk about great bunkers!!! The Widow Hole is one of the most beautiful holes I have played.

The preserve at Jordan lake NC. I’ve played here 5-6 times, it’s a great track with beautiful NC scenery. In the fall they do a play all you want after 1pm for around $25. I would easily pay $60-$80 here to play. Every hole is a Change, tons of elevation change, and it’s in immaculate shape year round. I place this above most of the Pinehurst courses I’ve played for a quarter of the price.

Moraine CC

Meadowbrook CC (MI)

Machrahanish Dunes

Dunaverty

The Island

i think most everyone knows about macrahanish and kpr in new mexico ... those aren't the easiest courses to get to (though i hope to get to macr next summer)

Not Machrahanish, (which is also amazing but rated highly) Machrahanish Dunes the David Kidd course next door.

(headed to Campbeltown right now actually...)

Along with Sand Hills one of the most natural courses built in the last 75 years or so.

Bayonet is an awesome course. Already mentioned above but if given the choice, would rather play it than Pebble Beach.

I had one problem with Bayonet, I think it was the second par 5. There was a tree blocking basically all shots to the green. I was punished for having a good drive right down the middle. That made me pretty upset.

Tanglewood Championship Course. Fantastic layout, conditions can sometimes be an issue. Currently undergoing a renovation. Redoing bunkers, eliminating some bunkers, new irrigation, converting greens to Bermuda. Site of 1974 PGA Championship.

Glad I read this, I was planning on making the hour and a half drive up there to play it next weekend.

I just looked at the pictures of the Bayonet holes. If that tree is blocking you, you were in the wrong spot. You either have to lay further back, or bomb it by the tree. If you try and bomb it, there is a fairway bunker on the left. There is plenty of room to the left to set up a third shot. If I remember correctly, the best place is to be just short of the left fairway bunker. It opens up the entire hole. The 2nd par 5 on the back is 18 and if that tree blocks you, you are way out of position. I know, I have been behind it.

I've played Tanglewood. Great golf course. It has been several years.

If you piped one down the middle, there's no way you are blocked out. On #8 you basically play hopscotch over the bunkers and get there is 3 - unless you are really long, as that's a very long hole. Mid-left off the tee, mid-right for the second, clean look in third.

Not sure if this post belongs here because I'm chatting up a muni, but here goes. SWMBO and I are vacationing near Harrisonburg, VA and we played the city muni today - Heritage Oaks. HOLY CRAP! The turf conditions here would draw $150+ greens fees almost anywhere. It's a friendly layout (short) but rewards accuracy as the rough is long and the fairways wind. Greens were VERY soft today - not sure if that s normal. It was a pleasure to play a non-bermuda layout - fescue rough and bent-grass (I think) fairways/greens. Highly recommend it - good staff, new carts, nice clubhouse. The city has got to be subsidizing it because the rates are VERY reasonable, especially for the conditions. Best muni I ever played. I will return - this is only 1 hour 45 minutes from my house. Road Trip!
