Gentles-

"Take out the X flex shafts, and this guy could be hitting next to me on the range at my club and I would have no idea that he's a legend of the game. Seeing him hit nothing but 20 yard hooks probably wouldn't change that either! "

20 yard hooks?

Hitting next to me on the range?

You'll need a Contestant Badge this week.

One of my very good friends played in a Pro Am with Kenny Perry. He said KP flushed everything, outdrove everyone (Driver avg. 304) had every iron going for the flagstick, and shot the easiest 67 from the Tips he'd ever seen.

In addition to being a multiple PGA Tour winner, KP is a 2-Time US Senior Open Champion.

And yes, Kenny Perry was Exempt from qualifying by winning last years US Senior Open at Salem CC.

That means KPs name is on every single 2018 US Open Entry Form.

20 yard hooks?

It isn't how, it's how many.

Evidently my sarcasm didn't come across well (does it ever!?) - obviously Kenny is an amazing player to have had the career he had. All I was trying to say was that if a 50+ year old guy wearing glasses showed up next to me with that bag, the last thing I would think is that i'm in the presence of a legend of the game. As you say, not how, but how many!

I knew from your original post that it was a bit of friendly sarcasm that’s why I responded the way I did. Obviously I can’t speak for the rest of the people that responded to you though.

His bag goes to show you how little clubs matter though— it’s not about the clubs themselves it’s about the player and his confidence in the clubs he’s using. Obviously Kenny must be pretty comfortable with those 15 year old R7 irons... he won MILLIONS with them and it’s not like iron technology (regardless of what TM wants you to believe LOL) goes out of style.

Yeah I figured as much. That set makeup and look would be hard to distinguish as a tour player without seeing him hit a shot. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew this guy absolutely stripes it. Stood out among even young PGA tour pros at Riv when I saw him for ball striking prowess. Hope he has a great week.

Those irons have excellent tech. Why all irons nowadays don’t have variable face thickness is beyond me.

I had to quick check and make sure I hadn't accidentally clicked on the 'Kenny Perry - WITB shot @ 2008 US Open' thread.

The man knows what he likes I guess.

Cool bag, really interesting to see what he sticks with when big endorsement $$$ aren't in play. Surprised to see he got rid of the G2i Craz-E putter he used forever.

Just goes to prove, going nuts on irons is WAAAYYY over rated, simply need to get a set with the profile you like looking at and that compliments your swing (with a shaft that works with you of course). Todays sets costing over $1,200 brand new, now thats criminal. Its an iron, not that much (if any) has changed in the past 10 years, especially in the blade and players cavity categories.

BTW, big KP fan. I also love Tom Lehmans mixed bag of "junk drawer" irons, its great.

R7 irons, standard model 'not TP'. Can get anything he wants out there, but sticks with those. He played the Taylor 320 irons for many years as well

I noticed this too. I had two sets of the R7 TPs, loved them. But they had non-conforming grooves so I eventually moved on. I'm pretty sure Kenny can get his custom to be conforming....

Can he though? Who would do that for him? Taylormade wouldn't. They'd want him running 790's or 770's so they could push the new stuff. I wonder if no one is saying anything because either A they forgot, or B they just don't care because this guy has no shot of winning.

Wonder if he was able to get some sets made with conforming grooves while the irons were current. The rule was made in 2007 or 2008, right? Could he have asked TM to make some with conforming grooves in them for the future.

Whatever the truth, I guess he really likes those irons!

2010 was the year. The groove design may have been conforming "as is",....or he didn't want aggressive grooves on his irons back then and had them do custom sets for him. Not every tour player was playing the groove type that is now against the rules

Those GP CP2 grips are hardly for old men. Go to any golf store and ask how popular they are. One of the top-selling grips out there because they’re excellent, even in rain. Winn Dri-Tac seems to be the favorite old guy grip.
