I received my shipping notice from Taylormade for my P790 UDI that I custom ordered to similar specs as my P790 3 iron......+ 1/4” in length, 1/2 degree flat, Nippon Modus 120 X shaft. Should arrive Tuesday. I hit the 3 iron so well that I had to get a UDI.

When did you place order?

Have been doing pretty good with the wait until this morning when I watched Rick Shiels video on it. Now I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Have a tournament in mid August that has several Par 4's between 370-400 with fairway bunkers placed where I normally hit driver. This club will allow me to stay short of the bunkers and still have short irons and wedges into the greens.

Yes Rick Shiels review was quite positive, but did you see TXG "hybrid vs driving iron"? He was playing a TI Nike hybrid that he absolutely loves and did against the P790 UDI, the P790 had 5MPH more ball speed and they were shocked.

If you have the swing speed for the P790 UDI (I don't) it can really be an absolute killer with ball speed and distance.

Maybe TM is bringing out a line of 'real driving Irons' this time in various lofts that would be suitable additions to any iron set.. :good:

After all, the model now being 'discontinued' was really nothing more than an optional '2-iron' for the P-790 set. A graphite stock shaft and a UDI stamp doesn't change the fact that it's just a P-790 2-iron. :swoon:

It is certainly 'about time' for TM to update the original UDI's which were quite successful in the marketplace and made available in (5) different lofts ranging from a 16* #1 UDI to a 26*.#5 UDI. Keep in mind the best time for TM to announce a new driving iron line would be in July during the (British) Open Championship Seems we always see more Driving Irons in use at the Open Championship because wind is usually more of a factor there, and missing your fairway target can leave you in unplayable, thorny, 'gorse', a super-deep pot bunker, or this year, in one of Carnoustie's famous 'burns' (creeks), that snake their way around that great course.. Using Driver off the tee can be very risky!...

AN 'ORIGINAL TOUR PREFERRED' UDI

Note: Just to avoid any confusion, the RSI 'TP' UDI is not a different club than the one pictured above. It is the same UDI clubhead as the Tour Preferred model shown, with the same stock C-Taper Lite steel shaft. TM simply changed the lettering on the UDI clubhead head and used the 'red capped' Tour Velvet grip instead of the standard (all black) Tour Velvet grip used earlier 'Tour Preferred' UDI's. (FWIW, these 'original' UDI's were also constructed with 'hollow' technology').

It's a 'moot point' since that is so unlikely to happen, but I think the best answer to the hypothetical question you are posing here is NO!... :no2:

Too bad the Epon driving iron is so ludicrously expensive.

It's really good, but as a kid, I paid less for cars.

Didn't want to wait so picked up a ping rapture driving iron

Good choice my man. The rapture is definitely one of the best DI's ever made. I have both the 790 and rapture, the rapture is significantly more forgiving and gets the ball up into the air much easier. But if you're hitting into the wind or just want to keep it low the 790 is a better choice, they're both great clubs though.

I think the 2/17* UDI has unseated my 5 wood. Can get 225-230 carry and even some strong swings to carry 240. Feel much better looking down at an iron over the wood.

Finally can settle on the driving iron.. Although I still miss my U65...

Same here from off the fairway for my UDI over 5W, but off the tee I can get an extra 20 yards.

I went with the Project X Hzrdus Black 6.5 in mine. I ordered it 3 months ago. After a range session and playing a round with it, I'm not a fan of the shaft at all. I have plenty of swing speed for the 6.5, but 85g is just too light for me. I feel like I have to go after it a bit to load the 6.5 properly, but it's tough to do so with the light shaft. It makes transitioning properly difficult for me, especially since my irons have 130g shafts in them.

I'd order another with an x100 to match my irons, but that 9/21 availability date gives me the willies, especially considering there were two delays with my order.

Looks like I'll either sell it and try to pick up another from somewhere or reshaft this one. I just think there's too much dispersion to feel comfortable sticking with this shaft.

Just change the shaft, easy, mine came with Metal Project X 6.5 and now have my normal C Taper X in it.

I'm a lefty and tried to order a 3i for my set since UDI isn't available, was told they were back ordered until October. Looks like the P790's are getting phased out or TM really is having difficulty with their manufacturing.

Just getting phased out because something new is on the way...

The 790 UDI is getting phased out, or the 790 iron set? Or both? If a new lineup is coming out next spring I’m going to wait until then to replace my current setup. Thanks!

I've seen pictures of an all black P790. I'm not sure if this is the "new" one, or just like Callaway did with the Rogue Pro/Apex, trying to make a few extra bucks with a "limited" run.

A new UDI is supposed to be released this fall from what I hear. There were some pics floating around on instagram yesterday but they were very vague. The only thing I heard about the P790 irons is a possible replacement next spring. Evidently it will be a lot cleaner then the current model. Who knows what or when though...
